Once there were several scientists in a forest. They were trying to 1 the rarest animal in the world. No one had seen it, so everyone was 2 and wanted to be the first one to photograph and study it.

    The animal only came out at night, 3 the scientists did some other studies in the day. 4 them, there was a famous scientist named Walter. Every day, he would spend an hour sitting at the desk and putting all his equipment (设备) in the 5 place. He did this carefully. But other scientists laughed at him because they thought Walter was just wasting 6.

    One night, the animal appeared 7. The scientists heard its call. But the call didn't last long. The animal was frightened by the 8  made by the scientists while they were scrabbling (忙乱地找) for their cameras and notebooks.

    They ran to congratulate Walter. They now understood the importance of keeping things in order. Because of that, Walter could find everything quickly in the dark.

      Each morning a rich man found a poor man sitting on a park bench（凳）．The poor man always 1there, looking at the big   2  in which the rich man lived. One day the rich man got out of his car and said to the poor man, “Excuse me, but I just want to know 3 you sit here and look at my hotel    4 ”.“Sir ,” said the poor man, “I am a failure. I have no money, no family, no home. I sleep on this bench, and every night I dream that one day I'll sleep in that hotel.”

      A few days later, the rich man  8 the poor man's room to ask him if he was enjoying  9  .To his  10 , he found that the man had moved out of the hotel, back to his   11 .When the rich man asked why, the poor man said, “You see,   12    I'm down here sleeping on my bench, I dream I'm up there , in that big hotel. It's a    13 dream. But when I was  14  there, I dreamed I was back to this cold bench. It was a terrible dream , and I   15  get any sleep at all.”

    I'm a cook in a restaurant. One day, I went for a walk when suddenly I saw smoke. I went closer to 1 what was happening. It came from a house. At that time I saw the firemen rushing into the 2 and I ran to 3 to one of them. I asked him if there was someone inside.He replied that there was a whole family. My heart missed a beat(跳动) because I realized(意识到) that the family was4 . And it was5for them to run away from the inside.

    I asked if there was an extra (多余的) uniform for firemen. He said “6”，and I quickly wore it and went in with three more 7. As I went inside, it was so hot that I felt as if I was melting (熔化).I passed by the living room and saw the curtains (窗帘) 8. When the firemen tried to 9 the fire, I found the people. They 10themselves behind the curtains. One of them was unlucky 11he was seriously burnt. I helped them out of the burning house 12. Finally we were safe from the danger and the firemen put out the fire 13. The officer of the firemen 14e for my courage(勇气) to help those people.

    That night I 15not sleep because of all the excitement. Even now I am still proud that I saved the people who were in danger. I'll never regret(后悔) what I did.

    I noticed an old couple as they walked into the second-hand store. Just before that I had dropped off a bag of clothes and a few other things I no longer needed.

    The couple moved 1 around me in search of things they had on a list.

    “Can I help you 2 something?” I asked curiously.

    They stopped, looked at me and said, “We're looking for 3 things that look new.”

    “Every year in the past, we tried to 4 the year with new things. It was a goal (目标) to have new things around us so that we had a new 5, new hopes and dreams for the new year,” said the old man. “But nowadays we also believe that even though something is old, it 6 be new to someone who has never seen it before.”

    “So, at the end of each year we search for things that are 7 to no one but new to us,” the old woman added.

    “What have you found so far?” I asked.

    The man showed two things: a small frame made of sticks and one baby boot.

    “We still need one more thing,” he said.

    “What did you find?” the old man shouted, too.

    The old woman walked slowly towards us 9 something in her hand. “Look! It's a flower vase. Well, it looks 10, but it's new to us!”

    They then headed for the checkout without saying another word.

    Everything that you see for the first time is new.

    Teenager Jake Deham was skiing with his family in the USA when he fell over and lost one of his skis(滑雪板). His family didn't know that he had a problem. They 1 skiing. When they got to the foot of the mountain, there was no 2of Jake.

    Jake couldn't find his ski 3 In the end, he decided to 4 his other ski and walk down the mountain. But he couldn't work out the right way to go.

    It was now getting dark and he was a long way from any place of safety. He knew that he might die that night in the5 temperatures. But Jake kept 6 At home, Jake watched a lot of TV programmes about living in difficult situations. He remembered the 7 from these programmes and knew that he should build a hole in the snow. He made a hole and pointed(指向) it up the hill 8 the wind couldn't blow into it. Outside his hole, the temperature 9to a dangerous -15℃ that night, but inside it Jake was safe from the cold.

    But he had to get down the mountain. The 10 always said,“ If you are lost, you should find someone else' s tracks(足迹) through the snow and 11them.” “I wanted to live my life.” remembers Jake. “So I got up and I found some ski tracks and I followed those.” He walked and walked and finally he saw lights. Nine hours 12he lost his ski, he found a team of workers who came to save him. He was safe!

    His mum was very happy when she heard the news.13 Jake didn't even have to go to hospital. He got through the terrible experience 14any injuries(损伤).

    So, the next time someone says that watching TV is a waste of time, think of Jake. Sometimes TV can 15 your life!

    I used to hunt and have killed quite a few deer. There was great 1 in waiting and shooting.

    One cold morning in winter, I went alone to a hillside. I carried my gun and three thick sandwiches. I found a natural hiding place. It was pretty cold, but I had 2 clothing on. I sat there waiting for one hour. Nothing showed. The place was really 3.

    Suddenly, a beautiful buck(雄鹿) appeared. Surely I couldn't 4 it. I must wait for him to realize I was there. I waited for him to 5 with a start (惊吓).

    To my surprise, he came towards me! He was curious(好奇), I suppose. He must have known about men and their 6which would kill him. But he walked right up where I was sitting. Then he stopped and looked at me! I was getting a bit 7 now. A big buck can do a lot of damage.

    What happened next was hard to believe. But it all seemed quite natural. I reached up and scratched(抚摸) his head. And he 8 it. That big, wild, beautiful buck bent(弯下) his head.

    I scratched his body and fed him my last sandwich. Then he went his way, down the hill. I just watched him go--a strong buck carrying a proud head.

    I picked up my gun and started walking back. 9, I heard the shots—two of them. If you've hunted enough you know two shots mean a(n) 10. I had forgotten that there were other hunters around.

I decided to give up hunting from that day on.
