Differentweather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence andfeelings.

InAugust, it is very hot and wet in the northern part of the United States.People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during thismonth. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot at some times andvery cold at other times. People in these states have more heart trouble afterthe weather changes in February or March.

Theweather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a scientific report,IQ of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but afterthe wind, their IQ was 10% below. The wind can help people have moreintelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Studentsin many schools of the United States often get worse on exams in the hot monthsof the year（July and August）.

Weatheralso has a strong influence on people's feelings. Winter may be a bad time forthin people. They usually feel cold during these months. They might feelunhappy during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer.

Low air pressure may make people forgetful. Research shows that people leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. However, at about 18℃, people become healthier and stronger. People feel best at this temperature.

Areyou feeling tired, forgetful or unhappy today? It may be the weather's problem.

People often think of the North Pole and the South Pole as similar frozen wastelands. They are both places with very cold temperatures and few people live there. However, the North and South Poles are not much alike as people may imagine.

The North Pole has no land, only thick ice. Temperatures seldom go above 32°F, at which water turns into ice. Most of the time, it stays below zero. In winter temperatures are usually as low as-30 F.

Although conditions were very poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole. More than 100 years ago, two men, Robert Peary and Mathew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on March 8th, 1909. It was really a hard trip for them.

There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic on foot. People who stayed there may face many problems: very cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited. Few people can live in such a difficult place.

People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water called "leads". Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes.

Do you always care about studying and getting "A" grades in school? But in the United States, you might be considered (被认为) a bookworm if you cannot socialize (交际). Socializing is as important as your grade. If you just study all the time and don't socialize, your life won't be wonderful. So, how does one socialize with students in the US?

Lots of high schools often have soccer games during the autumn term. I didn't know anything about soccer, but I joined some of the soccer games in order to have fun with my friends. I thought I could learn the rules from others. However, to my surprise, some American students don't even know the rules but still go to the games in order to socialize. They cheer for the soccer players and have fun together.

The other common way to socialize is to join after-school clubs. You can choose clubs that you are interested in and make a lot of new friends. For example, one of my friends started a sketch (素描) club. I was interested in sketching. So I joined it. We soon became friends with each other.

Socializing is an important thing in the US. But grades are still important, too. An excellent student should have the ability to balance (平衡) his or her studying and socializing.

What does a lifelong learner look like?

Lifelong learners never think of themselves as the greatest experts(专家)in anything. They continue to learn and bring a great deal to the groups they belong to. What does a lifelong learner look like? Here are some of their main characteristics(特征).

They are knowledge seekers. They are always searching for much information on a topic they're interested in and looking for new experience or opportunities to improve their knowledge or skills.

They are social and self-directed learners. They like taking different courses and taking part in discussions around subjects they are interested in. ____ They also know their own learning styles, and their strengths and weaknesses. They can plan and organize their own learning.

They are critical(批判性的)thinkers. They always use a lot of ways to analyze(分析)and synthesize(合成)information. From their research they judge the information to see if it is useful for the question at hand.

They are problem solvers. They will meet different problems while learning. However, they usually see problems as challenges and life experiences and try to stand above them.

And many Chinese people go to Paris to see Chinese players in this Olympic Games. Pan Zhanle is one of the most famous players because he wins (赢) the first place of the swimming game. Many students likes him after watching his game. After Li Wenwen wins the women's +81kg title, Chinese players wins 91 medals (奖牌) in this Olympic game and 40 of them are gold medals.
