四川省乐山市2018年中考英语试卷

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的几个选项中,选出最佳选项。

C

Last week, I visited my friend Pete in his new home, where he lives with his wife and daughter. Pete used to spend his holidays traveling around the world – visiting the pyramids in Egypt or scuba diving (水肺潜水) in the Caribbean. Nowadays, he prefers to spend his holidays and weekends making his house look more beautiful. Like hundreds of thousands of other British people, he's found the joy of DIY (do it yourself) home repairs. This means that if there's anything that needs fixing around the house, he will try to do the job himself.

Pete showed me his new kitchen, which he put together himself, and his newly-painted walls. I asked him where he got the idea to do these things. He told me that his favourite source (来源) of ideas is a DIY program on TV.

This got me thinking about how popular DIY programs are in the UK. Each main channel (频道) has at least one home or garden makeover show. There are even channels totally on the subject.

I suppose it's not really surprising that DIY programs are so popular. There are two common sayings in Britain – “an Englishman's home is his castle (城堡)” and “there's no place like home” – which show how important our houses are to us. With the social changes of the last ten years or so, many people can't afford to buy bigger houses. So they are looking at how they can make their house better without spending a lot of money. DIY, clearly, is the perfect choice.

A、traveling round the world B、visiting Egypt C、diving in the Caribbean D、building a new house
(2)、What do most British people enjoy doing nowadays?

(3)、How did Pete manage to make his house more beautiful?
A、He asked house builders for advice. B、He got help from a DIY TV program. C、He called some of his friends for help. D、He paid workers to do the house work.
(4)、What does the underlined word “makeover” in Paragraph 3 probably means?
A、修建 B、交换 C、修饰 D、化妆
(5)、DIY programs have become popular because ______.
A、other programs are too boring to watch B、people are spending more time watching TV C、people can't afford new houses any more D、people are spending more time fixing their houses

 阅读下列材料,从A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳答案。

An old man was sitting on the sofa with Mike, his 45-year-old son. Suddenly a dove (鸽子) landed on the ground.

The father asked his son, "What is this?"

The son replied, "It is a dove."

After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, "What is this?"

The son said, "Father, I have just told you. It's a dove."

After a little while, the old father asked his son for the third time, "What is this?"

This time Mike could not control his anger and shouted, "It's a dove, a dove. Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again? I have told you so many times 'IT IS A DOVE!' Don't you understand this?"

The old man silently took out an old diary, turned to a page and showed it to Mike. Though a little impatient (不耐烦), Mike began to read it.

"Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a dove landed on the ground, and my son asked me what it was. I smiled at him, said it was a dove and hugged (拥抱) him. After a while Mike asked me again and I did the same. Pointing to the same dove, little Mike asked me what it was 23 times and I kept on answering his question and hugging him every time."

Something gently touched Mike's heart. His face turned red with shame for being so impatient to his father and he hugged him tightly (紧紧地).

Your parents have given you many things in their lifetime, but you may not realize that until they are gone.

Most people agree that honesty is a good thing.But does Mother Nature agree?Animals can't talk,but can they lie with their bodies and behavior?Animal experts may not call it lying,but they do agree that many animals behave dishonestly to fool other animals.Dishonesty often helps them survive(生存).

Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals.A bird called the plover sometimes pretends(假装) to be hurt in order to protect its young.When an enemy gets close to its nest,the plover pretends to have a broken wing.The enemy follows the "hurt" adult,leaving the baby birds safe.

Another kind of bird,the scrub jay,buries(埋) its food so it always has something to eat.Scrub jays also steal food.They watch where others bury their food and steal it.But clever scrub jays seem to know when others are watching them.So they get back later,dig the food and bury it again somewhere else.

Chimpanzees(黑猩猩) can also be sneaky.After a fight,the losing chimpanzee will give its hand to the other.When the winning chimpanzee puts out its hand,too,the chimpanzees are friendly again.But an animal expert once saw a losing chimpanzee take the winner's hand and start fighting again.When chimpanzees find food,it's natural for them to cry out.Then other chimpanzees come running.But some clever chimpanzees learn to cry very softly when they find food.That way,other chimpanzees don't hear them,and they don't need to share the food.

Personally, there is nothing I love more than asking "stupid" questions, especially the ones that have no right answers. I remember once asking some kids what time it was, at home, in Singapore, and finally on the Moon. After a long silence, finally a shy girl ventured (试探地说) to say that it was "every time" followed by an energetic Einstein who shouted it was "no time". Both kids shared that week's Noble Prize because no humans live in that faraway world and time is created by humans.

As a matter of fact, we are all good at asking questions by nature, but sadly as we age, we get used to the world around us and take things for granted. We became more results-oriented (注重结果的) and concentrate our efforts on success. If something is working, don't fix it or worry about the cause; just relax and go with the flow. Common belief may work well, but that does not mean it is always right. Throughout history, it has been those who have questioned common belief and those who have challenged our common-sense ideas of the world that have been the ones to have brought about major progress in human civilization.

In 500 BC, the ancient Greeks wondered whether the Earth was round because sailors on the sea had noticed that the farther south they went, the more different stars they saw in the sky. Why was the sky changing? Nearly 2,000 years later, the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei became interested in this question and ended up demonstrating the "crazy" concept of heliocentrism (日心说), in which the Sun lies at the center of the universe while the Earth circles around it at 30 kilometers per second. But if the Earth is spinning around so quickly, why aren't we being thrown off of the surface of the planet? The answer to this question would not be clear for another century.

People like routine, but past performance is no guarantee of future results. While those who challenge common belief tend to be subjected to abuse, the progress of humankind would have otherwise been impossible without these persistent people and their "stupid" questions.
