A fox once said to a cat, "I have a whole bag of tricks（诡计). I know   1 than a hundred different ways of  2away from my enemies--dogs." "That's great," said the cat. "As for(至于) me, I have only one trick, but it usually works. Will you please3  me some of yours?", "Well, if I am not busy some day, I'll teach you one or two easier ones. "

    Just at that moment they heard something  4. That was a dog. The cat climbed5  a tree quickly. "This is my only trick," she called down to the fox. "Which trick are you going to6  , Mr Fox?" The fox sat there. He used his head 7  one of his many good ways.

    The dog came nearer. The fox thought and  8  . At last he found a way to run. Running away was    9    best way.   But that was too late.   Before he started 10, the dog came to him. That was the end of the fox.

    Once, in a small village, lived a family with eight children. Two of the children loved1very much, but the family was so poor that2was impossible to send them to study at the art college at the same time. After many discussions, the two boys finally3a plan. They would throw a coin. The loser would4down into the coal mines (煤矿) and used the money that he would make in the mines to support his brother5at the college. Then, when the brother who won finished his studies, after four years, he would support6brother studying at the college.

    James won and Jack went down into the mines. James studied with all his heart and his paintings were much better than7of most of his teachers, and by the time he graduated, he was beginning8a lot of money for his paintings.

    9James returned, the family held a big dinner for his great success. Soon after the meal began, James 10up from his seat to drink a toast(敬酒) to his dear11 He said, "Jack, now you can go to the art college and your dream 12true. I will take care of you."

    But Jack said13 "Brother, the four years in the mines has done too much to my hands, so it's too late. Now I can't even hold a glass. "

    American President Roosevelt's house was once broken into and lots of things were stolen. Hearing this, one of Roosevelt's friends wrote to him and 1 him not to take it to his heart so much.     I still remember that day. I was waiting to get some 1 for shopping in a bank. Among the crowd, I noticed a little boy 2 some sunglasses in one hand and a big bag in other. The boy was about 10 years old. He was walking around the people inside the bank and asked them to buy his sunglasses. But 3 would buy any from him. He tried from one person to another. From the look on his face, I knew he would not 4 anyway.

    Now, I decided to have a talk with him. I went up and asked, "Do you go to school?" He nodded (点) his head. Then I continued, "Why do you 5 sunglasses?" He said nothing. I gave him ￥20 and said that I was not in 6 of the sunglasses but he could keep the money. To my surprise, his face changed a lot, which is still in my memory today. I didn't know 7 to say next. Then he answered, "You buy sunglasses or you 8 back the money. I don't need your pity. "I felt very 9 for what I did, and I told him that I would buy two pairs.

    I took these sunglasses home and asked myself, "Did such a young boy need to do it for his self-respect (自尊)?" He could easily take the ￥20 and left. But he chose to sell his sunglasses and get the money not because of others' 10. I will remember this lesson forever.

    Long ago, everything on the Earth was asleep. Nothing moved. Nothing grew. (One day the Rainbow Serpent(彩蛇)woke from her sleep and came out from under the ground.

    She travelled a long way but finally got 2  because she was alone and so she returned to the place where she had first appeared, and called to the frogs. "Come out！"

    The frogs appeared one by one. It was difficult for them to move forward because stomachs were 3  water, which they had stored in their sleep. The Rainbow Serpent tickled(挠疼)the frogs and, when they 4  , water ran all over the Earth and that is how lakes and rivers were formed.

    Because there was water, all the animals 5  , and the grass and trees grew. The animals followed the Rainbow Serpent across the land. They were happy. Each lived and collected food with other animals of the same kind.

    At first, all the animals behaved well, but some started making 6  , and so the Rainbow Serpent made rules that they all had to obey.

    The Rainbow Serpent said, ""Those who obey my rules will get a reward(奖贫). I will turn them into humans. Those who don't obey my rules will be punished(惩罚)and turned into stone, and will never be able to   on the Earth again. "

    The bad animals became stone and turned into mountains and hills, and those who obeyed the rules were turned into humans, and lived with others of the same kind happily on the Earth.
