浙江省杭州市2018年中考英语试卷

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项。

There is a popular Chinese saying that “Fair skin(皮肤) will make up for three flaws(缺陷)”. This mentions the fact that in Chinese culture, it is believed that people who have fair skin are more beautiful. In Western culture, however, the opposite is true — many Westerners think tanned skin is prettier. The example shows that different cultures have different ideas of what they think is beautiful. These cultural meanings of the beauty, however, are no longer important. As more and more people travel overseas, ideas about beauty are being shared among cultures. The Internet has also made it easier for people to share different types of beauty since people are always posting pictures on social media. The result is an ever-changing idea of what is considered beautiful.

The cultural practice of ear piercings, for example, has become a part of modern day culture.

In Kenya, it is a tradition among Masai men and women to pierce and then make their ear

lobes( 耳 垂 ) longer using ivory and wood or stones. They then wear colorful things on their ear lobes. This is a common practice since longer ear lobes are seen as a sigh of beauty. This tradition has now found its way into present-day culture. Nowadays, this might still seem unusual to some, but with more and more well-known actors and film stars showing off their longer ear lobes, it will finally become more fashionable.

It is understood that different cultures around the world have different ways of showing beauty. However, since we now live in a worldwide society, people's views about beauty are always changing. With the help of the Internet, people are now able to easily borrow ideas from other cultures to help them stand out. So what new fashions can we expect to see in the future?

(1)、What has made it easier for people to share ideas about beauty?
A、The development of technology. B、The popularity of the latest fashions. C、The unchanged cultural traditions. D、The world's growing population.
(2)、What can be learned about the Masai people from the passage?
A、Longer ear lobes are their new fashion. B、Only women make their ear lobes longer. C、They think longer ear lobes look beautiful. D、They make actors and film stars famous.
(3)、The underlined word “them” in the last paragraph refers to           .
A、people B、ideas C、cultures D、fashions
(4)、What is the passage mainly about?
A、People in Asian countries like fair skin better. B、Beauty is considered important in many cultures. C、Different cultures have different ideas about beauty. D、People's ideas about beauty are changing all the time.

We all know that being kind can help people in need, but do you know that kindness can also help yourself?

According to National Public Radio, the Big Joy Project began in 2021. It spreads the message that people can find happiness in difficult times and use it to do good.

The project was open to anyone. More than 70, 000 people from over 200 countries took part in it. All had to take an online survey answering questions about their feelings. Then, they needed to do a small thing every day, such as visiting an elderly neighbor or buying a cup of coffee for a stranger. Finally, they had to take the other survey to compare their feelings before and after.

The results were announced on November 11, 2023. "We are really excited. Aner the project, there are big changes, including greater happiness, less stress, better sleep, stronger problem-solving abilities, and greater satisfaction with relationships," said Emiliana Simon-Thomas, the leader of the Big Joy Project.

"Think of happiness as a skill that you can get through practice, instead of seeing it as something that happens to you. This may make sense, "added Emiliana.

Will the changes brought about by doing good last long or disappear soon? The question is not yet answerable. But one thing is certain—doing one good thing can lead to other good things. That's why small acts of kindness can go a long way.

 阅读下列五段语言材料,从方框中所给的A~F六个选项中选择符合意思的标题(其中有一项是多余选项)。

 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项 (A 、B 、C 、和 D) 中,选出最佳选项。

Cathy HackI's son wanted a party for his 9th birthday. He wanted to hold the party on Roblox, a website where users can play and create games. Roblox is part of the metaverse. This is a virtual-reality space. There, users can interact with other people and digital environments. Virtual reality is a three-dimensional simulation of a real-life image or environment. "They hung out and played, "Hackl said, "Just because it happens in a virtual space doesn't make it less real. "The term metaverse has become popular. Today, people are spending more of their lives in virtual spaces.

The word metaverse comes from a science fiction book from the 1990s. But the metaverse has been around longer than that Online communities have existed since the 1980s. We enter the metaverse through a screen. This could be through virtual reality(VR). It could also be through augmented reality(AR). Augmented reality covers computer-generated images on the real world. These experiences create a greater blending of our virtual and real lives. But these two worlds already cannot be separated and we don't even need any headsets, such as VR glasses.

Think about the Didi Taxi app. It uses location data to tell drivers where their cars are.

The metaverse is an expansion(扩张)of the Internet. There are lots of Internet problems to solve already. Still, many people say it has real benefits. They say it can increase social networks and improve mental health. Hackl is a metaverse expert, and she's African. She says, "You can encourage a lot more people to join and build social relations. "For those already spending part of their life in the metaverse, that building has begun.

Carrie Tatsu runs a business in the metaverse. But she wants her kids to spend time in the real world. "It's so important for humans to be with humans in real life, "she said, "I think as kids grow up in this space, it's important for them to take part, go smell a flower here, walk on a trail, have a real conversation with a friend. Even though you can simulate that, the simulation is not the same. "
