Good Heart to Lean on

More than I realized, Dad has helped me keep my balance.

When I was growing up, I was embarrassed to be seen with my father. He was severely disabled and very1 and when we walked together, his hand on my arm2 balance, people would stare at us. I would feel uncomfortable at the unwanted3 if he ever noticed, he never 4 that he knew.

It was 5 to coordinate(协调一致) our steps—his hesitant, mine impatient—and because of that, we didn't say much6 we went along. When we started out, he always said, “You set the pace. I will try to 7you.” Our usual walk was to or from the subway, which was 8 he got to work. In my memory he went to work in spite of 9 or bad weather, and he never missed a day and would 10 it to the office even if others could not. He never talked about himself as an object of 11 nor did he show any envy of the more fortunate. What he 12 for in others was a “good heart”, and if he found one, the owner was good enough for him.

Now that I am older, I believe that his idea is a proper 13 by which to judge people, even though I14don't know exactly what a “good heart” is. But I know the times I don't have one myself.

He has been gone many years now, but I think of him often. I wonder if he 15 I was unwilling to be seen with him during our 16now I'm sorry that I never told him how sorry I was for feeling 17 to be with him in public. I think of him when I complain (抱怨) about something unimportant, when I am 18 of another's good fortune, and when I don't19 a “good heart” At such times I put my hand on his arm to 20 my balance, and say, “You set the pace. I will go behind you.”

I learned this lesson from a(n)2many years ago. I took the head 3 job at school in Baxley, Georgia. It was a small school with a weak football program.

It was a tradition for the school's old team to play against the 4 team at the end of spring practice. The old team had no coach, and they didn't even practise to 5the game. Being the coach of the new team, I was excited because I knew we were going to win, but to my disappointment, we were defeated. I couldn't 6 I had got into such a situation. Thinking hard about it, I came to 7that my team might not be the number one team in Georgia, but they were 8me. I had to change my 9 about their ability and potential.

I started doing anything I could to help them build a little10. Most important, I began to treat them like11. That summer, when the other teams enjoyed their 12, we met every day and 13 passing and kicking the football.

Six months after suffering our 14 on the spring practice field, we won our first game and our second, and continued to 15. Finally, we faced the number one team in the state. I felt that it would be a16for us even if we lost the game. But that wasn't what happened. My boys beat the best team in Georgia, giving me one of the greatest 17 of my life!

From the experience I learned a lot about how the attitude of the leader can 18 the members of a team. Instead of seeing my boys as losers, I pushed and 19them. I helped them to see themselves 20, and they built themselves into winners.

    Winners are made, not born.

The process of forgiveness can be a liberating experience. Interestingly, forgiveness can only occur because we have been given the gift of the ability to make choices. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} The choice of offering forgiveness develops along three steps.

At step one you are filled with self justified anger. At some point in your life you have been hurt and you are mad at the person who you feel has wronged you. You blame the person committing the wrong. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} You have forgotten that you have a choice as to how you will react.

    The second step towards forgiveness emerges when after feeling angry with someone for a while you realize that the anger does not feel good to you. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} So you take steps to forgive. You may begin to see the problem from the other person's point of view or you may simply decide to let the problem go. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

The third stage of forgiveness comes after you have seen the beneficial results of forgiveness and you don't want to waste your precious life in discomfort. In this stage the choice is to work to either repair the relationship or let go of seeing the situation as a problem. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} At this stage you are aware that the length of time you experience the situation as a sorrow is primarily up to you.

A. If we want to forgive someone, no one can stop us.

B. We have the choice to forgive or not to forgive and no one can force us to do either.

C. In either case you decide to forgive because you have had some practice with it and see the benefit in your life.

Dream is beauty. Maybe you can see the things full of magic and maybe you will be moved by your own dream.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}. But should we have our life without dreams? Of course not.

Everyone has his dreams and dreams are especially important to teenagers. As teenagers, you have many dreams. These dreams can be very big, such as winning the Nobel Prize. Or they can be small, for example, you may just want to become one of the ten best students in your class. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}, what do you do with it? Do you ever try to make your dream come true?

Andrew Matthews, an Australian writer, tells us that making our dreams come true is the biggest challenge in our life. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}, or that it is impossible for you to become a writer. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. In fact, everyone can fulfill his dream. The first thing you must do is remember what your dream is. Don't let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want. Do this step by step and your dream will come true earlier because a big dream is made up of many small dreams.
