Earlier this year Rodney Smith Jr. made headlines when he drove eight hours from his home in Huntsville. Alabama, to cut the lawn for an elderly soldier in North Carolina who couldn't find anyone to help him with his yard work.

That wasn't the first time the twenty-nine-year-old Bermuda native had gained such attention. To do his good deeds, Rodney often finds leads for those in need through social media.

Back to one August afternoon in 2015, Rodney Smith Jr. was driving home. That's when Rodney saw an elderly man struggling to mow his lawn. He would take a couple of shaky steps, using the handle to stabilize himself, pause, then slowly push the mower again. Rodney decided to help. Mr. Brown thanked him greatly, and Rodney went home feeling satisfied.

Sitting at his computer to do his homework, Rodney couldn't get Mr. Brown out of his mind. There must be many Mr. Browns out there. He went online and posted that he would mow lawns for free for senior citizens. Messages flooded in.

One day a cancer-battling woman said she wasn't having a good day. Rodney decided to do more than mowing lawns. After he finished mowing, he knocked on her door. "You're going to win this fight, Madam", he said. Then he asked folks to pray for her on social media.

Word of Rodney's mission spread. A grandmother in Ohio said he'd encouraged her 12-year-old grandson to mow lawns. He got a letter from a seven-year-old boy in Kansas. "Mr. Rodney, I would like to be a part of your program, and I'll make you proud," he wrote.

That gave Rodney an idea. In 2017, he decided to establish a programme Raising Men Lawn Care Service to make a national movement for young people. The kids learn the joy of giving back.

Yard work seems like a small, simple thing, but taking care of the lawn means a lot to the people they do it for. "When we mow their yards for free, they can use the money for healthcare and food etc. It means more than you would think," Rodney said.

Tanni was born with an illness,{#blank#}1{#/blank#} made her unable to move her muscles normally. Tanni was interested{#blank#}2{#/blank#} sports, but when she was growing up she didn't see many disabled athletes on television. Then several years later, while watching the London wheelchair marathon, she saw an athlete she knew. She dreamed that she would be on the starting line, competing in the marathon too. Finally, her dream{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (come) true. She was not only on the starting line, but also the winner at the finish line. Tanni believes you'll never know{#blank#}4{#/blank#} you can do unless you try.

Defeat Disability

Yang's ambition was to get an architect certificate or become a bowling master.But when he{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(conduct) experiments with a microscope in the basement,a tank on the bench exploded,sending him flying outwards through the exit.In other words,he was disabled.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(feel) clumsy,he was annoyed at first though nobody made fun of him.He cut out going outdoors and just sat{#blank#}3{#/blank#} at home talking to his parrot or tortoise silently.His sister resigned to help him in many ways.Her assistance and encouragement were so{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(benefit) to his psychology {#blank#}5{#/blank#} he adapted to his disability soon and became outgoing again.In a college accessible to him,he studied politics and literature.He always sat in the front row near{#blank#}6{#/blank#} entry without any absence and,{#blank#}7{#/blank#} the help of his handy laptop,he studied well by means of dictation.His thesis (论文),Abolishing Slavery,met with all professors' approval.After class,he and his companions often played drum music,{#blank#}8{#/blank#} was noisy but suitable for his hearing.After graduation,he made high profits by {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(design) software for a firm.

All in all,in his community,he won his dignity and people's congratulations.He always wished all the best to his{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(disable) fellows and encouraged them,"Never mind! All you have is adequate to get your achievement!"

I grew up hiking and climbing mountain s a lot. It was my dad who accompanied me and taught me how to hike and climb mountains. On our first hike, our group ran ahead without us. Dad and I ended up 1 the path toward the top. This was the 2 part of the climb, where we had to climb rocks. I was scared not to have the path to tell us where to go. Mainly, I was afraid that Dad would fall off the mountain when he went 3 to seek for the best way for me to climb up. I was grateful for his 4 . He always made me feel like I was safe with him — even when he insisted that we should not 5 .

When we were close to the top, we 6 some hikers. One of them crouched (蹲) down on a rock, grasping at branches of a bush. His face was 7 and looked frozen, like a statue. Dad asked what was going on. The man 8 told him that he was frightened of 9 . In my 7-year-old mind, I thought, "But, you're climbing a mountain!" Dad always helped people in trouble. He told the man to 10 him while he led him to a spot below that was 11 by trees, with no view of the valley below. Dad told him to wait there for his group of hikers to come back and 12 him up. Dad taught me sympathy and to help others in need whenever I can.

When we finally reached the top and 13 our group, we sat on the highest point, looking at the breathtaking scenery. I was so 14 we hadn't stopped halfway. Dad taught me, "Don't give up, especially when you're almost there." This has been a valuable 15 that has got me through some big challenges in my life.

Kelli Boehle says her son Nik was an amazing and caring person. Nik was diagnosed (诊断) with cancer in 2008 when he was 17. He passed away in 2012. But Nik's kindness and generosity have lived on long after his death

After he was diagnosed and started treatment, Nik was granted a wish experience from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. "For just this period of time, we didn't think about cancer," Kelli Boehle said. "All we thought about was enjoying our time together." In 2009, Nik met another young man Nate, who was also going through cancer treatment. He'd been diagnosed a month after turning 18, and Nik learned he was too old to qualify for a wish. The night before Nik passed away, he asked his mother to help ensure that young adults fighting cancer could have their wishes come true too.

"It was like a seed he planted that just wouldn't stop coming into my mind," she said. In 2012, Kelli Boehle started Nik's Wish. The nonprofit grants wishes to young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 who are battling cancer. Nate was the organization's first wish recipient. "It's meant to bring them joy and know that they're loved and that we're fighting for them, too," Kelli Boehle said.

Recently, 19-year-old Jordan Morrow received her wish to attend a Taylor Swift concert as part of a trip to Los Angeles. For Morrow, who has spent the last year battling brain cancer, going to the concert has done more than lift her spirits. "I think it's something to get me through whatever comes my way," she said. "And I'm thankful for Nik's Wish for that."

In the 1lyearssinceNik passed away, the organization has granted more than 300wishes across more than 30 states. In the beginning, Kelli Boehle says she wasn't sure she could be a wish maker and work closely with the young adults.But now, it'sher favoritething to do.

Fourteen-year-old Harini Logan won the Scripps National Spelling Bee last Thursday, defeating 12-year-old Vikram Raju in a tie-breaker. It's the first time the con test has ever been decided by a tie-breaking round of spelling.

A spelling bee is a contest where players take turns spelling words. Players who spell a word wrong are out of the contest. As the con test goes on, the words get more difficult. Normally, the contest ends when there's only one player left who hasn't made a mistake. Though the bee is mainly about spelling, since 2021 it has changed slightly to also focus on the meaning of the words. During parts of the contest, students were asked to choose the correct meaning of a word.

That caused trouble for Harini. She was asked about the meaning of the word "pullulation". She said the word described the nesting of birds. The con test organizers had expected the answer the "swarming of bees". Harini was removed from the contest. But soon she was back in—the judges double checked and learned that Harini's definition was also correct. One by one, the other students spelled a word wrong and got out. Finally, only Harini and Vikram were left.

The Scripps bee has been running for over 90 years. Many times it ended in a tie. As a result, the contest organizers changed the rules. They added a "spell-off" to the contest to make future ties much less likely. In the spell-off, Vikram and Harini each took turns trying to spell the words they were asked, but both made mistakes. At one point, Harini could have won by spelling the word "drimys"（a kind of plant）correctly. But she missed It.

That put the two into a super tie-breaking event, where they were each given 10 second s to correctly spell as many words as they could. In 90 seconds, Vikram had spelled 13 words correctly. Harini had 21 correct spellings, making her the new winner.
