I often wondered what it would be like to have cancer.

I didn't expect to find out, though, at last not for decades. I have always been healthy and strong; I regularly do hot yoga and swim two kilometers in a bay near my home in Sydney.

But now I know: it felt as if I was carrying a baby. Tumors (肿瘤) that silently grew inside me suddenly became bigger one weekend.

Then, one Saturday in June, I was struck with sharp pain and ended up in the hospital.

My doctor said it might be very serious. I spent two weeks waiting for the operation, not knowing if I'd live to the end of the year.

In the days before the operation, I turned off my phone and computer. I prayed so hard that I grew unnaturally calm.

The operation lasted five hours. The mass was fully removed, but it was unexpectedly complicated. I was in special care for eight days, in the wires, machines, with pipes in my lungs and liver.

Luckily, the operation was very successful and I am slowly growing stronger. I am walking upright again and waking without great pain. I can now drive, and am preparing to return to work. My prognosis (预后) is good, but I will need to live with the fear of return.

Everyone suddenly seems consumed with foolish worries. I have a different idea about the complaints posted by some Internet users who had the flu, were upset by the upcoming exams or burdened by work. I want to scream: BUT YOU ARE ALIVE! Alive! Each day is a gift, especially if you are upright and able to move with ease, without pain.

I'm still struggling with what all of this means. But in this short time, a truth became even clearer to me.

We should not have to move to the woods like Henry David Thoreau to "live meaningfully". It would be impossible and frankly tiring to live each day as if it were your last. My doctor asked me a few days ago how I became so calm before the operation. I told her: I prayed; I locked out negativity and drew my family and friends near; I tried to live meaningfully.

She said, "Actually you should do that for the rest of your life."

Anytime I travel on my bicycle across the country,I'm always amazed by how kind people can be to strangers.

One night,my friends and I were camping in a town in Missouri.There was a severe storm and we were getting  1 .A complete stranger came by to2 us that there were tornadoes(龙卷风)heading  our  way.The stranger invited us to his home.We were surprised by his3 for our safety.Later we learned that there had  been a lightening strike near the place where we had camped and several cattle had been4 .

Fortunately,we spent the night in a nice dry home.We were5 given the opportunity to take a shower. The next morning we had breakfast with the family and6 contact  information.In  a way we  felt  like  the family had become a part of our journey.This was one of the most heartwarming7 of my life because this  family had nothing to8 by being so kind to us.We were9 not the type they would usually10 but they treated us with respect and kindness.  The kindness of a stranger always11 my faith in humanity.Whatever the person12 always comes with no strings attached and that's the most13 part.

That family 14 us so much that during the rest of the trip,we 15 others out every chance we got. We even bought food with our busking(街头卖艺)tips for the homeless.It's always heartwarming when giving feels  as good as receiving.

Lanrick Jr. Bennett holds a unique title in Toronto: bicycle mayor. He led a Halloween Kidical Mass ride recently, which I attended with my daughter, son-in-law, their two dogs, and my granddaughter. He is working towards making cycling mainstream and safe for all residents in the city. I did not know that Toronto had a bicycle mayor; I surely would have voted for him in an election.

The bicycle mayor program is run by BYCS, an Amsterdam-based global NGO that believes "bicycles transform cities and cities transform the world". Standing in the strange but wonderful Bentway, a park built under an elevated expressway, Bennett says, "BYCS has 150 bicycle mayors across the world. And through a few friends putting in some really nice letters of encouragement, BYCS offered me a two-year term as an advocate here in the city of Toronto, becoming the first bicycle mayor of the city."

Bennett says he is boosting the work being done to make cycling more mainstream in Toronto. "I am giving a bit more exposure to the great work that has allowed me to be able to ride a bike throughout the city. It's getting better, we're seeing more infrastructure（基础设施）, and we're seeing more people not wanting to depend on cars as their primary piece. I'm happy that I have been part of a fantastic group thus far," says Bennett.

Since there's still a lot of work to do, Lanrick Jr. Bennett has been working hard to improve cycling conditions in Toronto, and his efforts have been recognized by the community. He has been advocating for more bike lanes（车道）, better lighting, and other safety measures to make cycling a practical option for commuters（通勤者）. It's great to see people like Lanrick

Jr. Bennett working towards making cycling safe and accessible for all residents.

I remember that it was a fall morning when the orchestra (管弦乐队) teachers came into Miss Newell's third-grade classroom. "You have hands for the viola(中提琴)," Miss Ciano told me. I was excited because my hands were finally good for something. I told my parents I wanted to play, and naturally, they agreed.

Since I first touched the viola, I haven't been able to put it down. Ignoring the difficulty, I am pulled closer to it each day.

Classical music is truly my best friend. It is the trusted friend of every man, woman and child. Various feelings are expressed in classical music. I discovered that when I was eleven and played a cello concerto (大提琴协奏曲) of Bach in a competition, the first movement was joyful, but the second movement was mysterious and full of pain. From the piece, I learned that music expresses not only feelings, but also sudden mood changes. By listening to classical music, I know that someone else shares these feelings. Since I am lucky enough to be able to play classical music, I am comforted by it when I am upset. It gives me a way to escape from my problems for a short period. Classical music can express my joy, sadness and anger.

Now look back at that fall day in the third grade and think how gullible I was for believing that anyone, even music teachers, could tell whether hands were perfect for a certain instrument. I'm certain they told me I had " viola hands" not because they were fortune-tellers(算命师), but because there was a lack of violists in our district. Classical music is one of the best things that ever happened to mankind. If you get introduced to it in the right way, it will become your friend for life.

Juleus Ghunta is a published children's author and award-winning poet. But when young, he could 1 read.

He grew up with his three sisters in rural Western Jamaica, raised by their single mother. Life was tough, and proper schooling was out of the question due to 2 resources.

When Ghunta finally went to school, he couldn't 3 on reading. Not only had he been kept home from school as a child, but he had not been 4 to books.

By sixth grade, he could spell his name, but still couldn't make out words or read with 5 . He struggled in school with a deep sense of 6 and worthlessness.

At age 12, a young teacher-in-training 7 a special reading program for 8 students. Ghunta was the first to join. That teacher, whose name he does not 9 now, became Ghunta's unsung hero — the person who changed his life.

The teacher was incredibly kind to him. Under her guidance, Ghunta's reading skills saw marked improvement, and his sense of inadequacy began to 10 .

"She had left me with the gift of literacy," he said. "And a deeper 11 of my talent."

After Ghunta's experience with the teacher, his life course 12 . He graduated with academic 13 and is now the author of two children's books, including "Rohan Bullkin and the Shadows."

Years later, Ghunta returned to his old school and asked the principal and teachers if they knew her 14 , but none did. Carrying this memory, however, he still hopes to find and thank her for seeing his 15 and being a source of light and hope in his life.

Edmond was a school bus driver for 22 years. One morning, the rain pouring down, he and the bus monitor Valentine were called to1 a student who missed the bus. What2 them was that the student didn't turn up when they reached the specified place.

Edmond and Valentine didn't expect they had a larger3 to achieve. Just around the corner, they found two children4 in the rushing floodwaters. The boy and the girl were struggling to hold onto a5 to avoid being swept away.

Edmond and Valentine couldn't6 to save them, but neither could swim. Jumping into action meant putting their own7 on the line. Since the bus was for special needs children, it was8 with removable seat belts. They got a(n)9 . Immediately they tied the seat belts together so as to10 the children.

Close by neighbors additionally got here to11 , and the group made combined efforts to12 the boy and the girl from the tree. They created a human chain and13 the tied belts out until Edmond got a firm hold on the children and pulled them to safety.

The two children were14 of Edmond, giving him a big hug. Surrounding them, everyone present was filled with happiness, though wet all over. This great rescue operation went viral on social media and drew praise for their15 from all quarters.
