It was the early 1950s, and I was a member of the A class at Armidale Senior High School in norther New South Wales. 

In the second and third years we all did General Maths, and our teacher was Mrs Lindsay-Clare Lindsay. Her arrival at our classroom was always quick, "Good morning everyone!" Then our books would be out, and we would watch her closely. 

I've thought a lot about Clare Lindsay over the years. What was her special magic? There are two reasons and I think they're necessary for all excellent teachers. She loved her subject, and she loved us, in a patient and objective way. She had no favorites that I can remember, and she called us all by our first names pleasantly She had a way of teaching that I loved. 

"Now we could go down this path couldn't we? We could argue this, and then this, but that doesn't work because of this. No Can Do(NCD)!" She would put a big cross, and write" NCD" against what she had put down. "Right! Why not go down this new path?" And she would show us that this new way worked. It was fun. We, whether the poor students or the skilled, all did well because of her. I've never found maths difficult, and I_put_that_skill_down_to_her. 

In the fourth and fifth years,we were divided into the science and arts streams(按学生能力划分的班级), and Mrs Lindsay didn't teach us any more. But as the Leaving Certificate exams were coming, one of my friends became nervous about how much maths he didn't know. With great courage, he went to see Mrs Lindsay, and asked if she would help him prepare for his General Maths paper. "Of course!" she said, and did just that, after school, in her own time. He passed. What a good teacher!

Defeat Disability

Yang's ambition was to get an architect certificate or become a bowling master.But when he{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(conduct) experiments with a microscope in the basement,a tank on the bench exploded,sending him flying outwards through the exit.In other words,he was disabled.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(feel) clumsy,he was annoyed at first though nobody made fun of him.He cut out going outdoors and just sat{#blank#}3{#/blank#} at home talking to his parrot or tortoise silently.His sister resigned to help him in many ways.Her assistance and encouragement were so{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(benefit) to his psychology {#blank#}5{#/blank#} he adapted to his disability soon and became outgoing again.In a college accessible to him,he studied politics and literature.He always sat in the front row near{#blank#}6{#/blank#} entry without any absence and,{#blank#}7{#/blank#} the help of his handy laptop,he studied well by means of dictation.His thesis (论文),Abolishing Slavery,met with all professors' approval.After class,he and his companions often played drum music,{#blank#}8{#/blank#} was noisy but suitable for his hearing.After graduation,he made high profits by {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(design) software for a firm.

All in all,in his community,he won his dignity and people's congratulations.He always wished all the best to his{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(disable) fellows and encouraged them,"Never mind! All you have is adequate to get your achievement!"

As a student in Pakistan, it had always been my dream {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (come) to China and immerse myself in its culture and events.In 2022, my dream finally came true. I arrived in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, to study at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China.

Chengdu, with its exquisite cuisine and rich history, attracted me from the moment I set foot in the city. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (situate) in the heart of Sichuan, Chengdu spreads out over the rich Chengdu Plain and is home to the ancient Dujiangyan irrigation system. It owes its {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (survive) to the mighty Minjiang River.

My journey in Chengdu has just begun. With each passing day, I become more thankful for many chances {#blank#}9{#/blank#} invite me, promising to deepen {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (I) understanding of China and create lifelong memories.

I was born and live in Seattle, and for forty-five years, not. a day has gone by that I haven't drunk coffee. I've also come to understand how and why coffee 1 me. It is caffeine, of course.

Recently, noticing the 2 in my consumption over the years, my wife innocently3 that I "take a little break" from coffee. The very suggestion made me mad.

"Why don't we just live apart for a year so it feels more like it did when we were first married?" A(n)5 ? I think not.

Assuming that coffee does keep me 6 for an extra few days or decades, I know how I'll spend them: drinking more coffee, or darker and darker roasts, whose 7 smell helps fight age-related loss of taste and smell.

My Spanish mother-in-law, whom I loved like my own mother, died last summer at the age of 93. She was sharp as ever and the 8 person I knew, up to the very end. She also9 multiple cups of coffee every day until her last. Our 10 love of coffee drew us together before we even spoke the same language, and 11 our relationship for more than three decades.

In her last weeks, I was lecturing in Barcelona and spending my 12 time with her, downing many 13 and chatting about the 14 to happiness. Here was her formula: elamor, la fe, y el café——love, faith, and coffee. In my opinion, that sounds 15 indeed.

    In my early thirties, I decided to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa at 5, 895meters above sea level. 

    After months of preparation, I started my great 1 . At the base of the mountain, I met Mik, a local porter, who warmly 2 me. Mik's job was to carry my equipment up the mountain, set up the tent, and carry everything back down after reaching the 3 . 

    The first day of the climb was 4 the rain forest, across a slippery , muddy ground covered with tree roots and vines (藤蔓) . Mik was carrying 30 kilos on his head! By that evening, we made it to 3, 000meters. The air was 5 and it was colder. When I arrived at the campsite for the night, my tent was already set up and waiting for me. 

    Day two was much steeper and rockier. I really had to 6 what I was doing. And I felt guilty for the tough 7 Mik had to work in. Yet when I turned to Mik, he said with the biggest smile, "pole, pole, "which means"8 , take it easy" in his native language. I 9 back, my burden lighter somehow. 

    Over the next five days, the climb got 10 difficult. The temperatures could 11 from 21℃to below freezing in a few hours. At 5, 700 meters, there's only half the oxygen 12 in each breath compared to at sea level. That leaves many people with severe headache. Yet Mik always had a smile and a positive attitude. It had an enormous impact on mo, giving me the 13 to keep going. 

    Even today, when I find myself 14 with anything in life, I just think back to Mik and his smile. A great attitude can bring joy to those around you, or even 15 strangers to the top of a mountain. 

Soon after my arrival in Luanda, I realized that I was going to have some free time available. I decided to spend it doing something useful and taking part in activities in the1 community. I started my search for volunteering opportunities here and a blog post2 my eye. It was Asthma's3 on how she started her4 journey in Luanda. Asthma has been volunteering at the Foundation(基金会) for Art and Culture for more than a year. I decided to get in touch with them and soon after I got a very warm and welcoming5 inviting me to the foundation. The next day as I6 into the foundation little did I know it would become such a(n)7 part of my life in Luanda.

I was a bit hesitant at first as I had never worked with children before and my Portuguese (葡萄牙语) then was much8 than now. But as I slowly started doing some activities with children, there were not any9 . All that you needed was a heart full of lóve and everyone10 the language of love.

I found plenty of11 to do with kids, keeping them busy and having fun. Together we played, sang, learned new things,12 new games and renewed the old. The children coming to the foundation are wonderful, and full of13 and energy. It is a beautiful place with wonderful projects. Without doubt, it is the best14 I could have found in Luanda, and I am very happy to go there as often as I can. The staff working there really make you feel welcome and15 .
