At thirteen, I was diagnosed (诊断) with a kind of attention disorder. It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not.

    In my first literature class, Mrs Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said, "Mrs Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to do it."

 She glanced at me through her glasses, "You are not different from your classmates, young man."

 I tried, but I didn't finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.

    In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn't get much education. But Louis didn't give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots (点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.

    Wasn't I the "blind" in my class, being made to learn like the "sighted" students? My thoughts spilled out (涌出) and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was not different from others; I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way to solve his problems, why should I ever give up?

    I didn't expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day—with an "A" on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words: "See what you can do when you keep trying?"

In the early 1990s, Ashok Kumar and I ran TRAFFIC-India, an organisation that worked to stop illegal wildlife trade in India. That was when the first letter from the famous American conservationist (自然环境保护主义者), George Schaller, arrived on our desk. Tibetan antelopes were being killed in their thousands, he wrote, and their wool (毛) was taken illegally to India. "No use in India for antelope wool," we wrote back, not knowing the seriousness of the illegal trade here. Schaller sent us back pictures to prove it and asked us to begin a Tibetan investigation.

We dug around and found that Schaller was right. We realised that antelope wool was the same as shahtoosh, the famous Kashmiri shawl (披肩). The shawl was made from the underwool of Tibetan antelopes, considered the warmest and softest wool in the world. A single shawl needed the wool of three to five antelopes. We had to save the animal.

Then began India's first campaign (运动) to protect Tibetan antelopes. A lot of designers and models joined us. Slowly, the message was being driven home: shahtoosh was out of style, shahtoosh was illegal and alternative (可替代的) shawls would save the antelopes from extinction.

There were, of course, those who tried to buck the campaign. The wife of a well-known army officer of India refused to give up her shahtoosh till she was forced out of it. She said: "I know the lovely antelope is dying and I so want to save it. But, the shawl is so light on my shoulders!"

Someone suggested farming the antelopes, but studies showed that it was an impractical idea. The antelopes could not even survive in low altitude zoos. The underwool is nature's gift to the animal to keep it warm at great heights. Later, we set up a business to process high quality pashmina wool and make an alternative shawl.

In 2000, good news came in from China. With strict policies in place, the number of Tibetan antelopes was on the rise again.

It was the early 1950s, and I was a member of the A class at Armidale Senior High School in norther New South Wales. 

In the second and third years we all did General Maths, and our teacher was Mrs Lindsay-Clare Lindsay. Her arrival at our classroom was always quick, "Good morning everyone!" Then our books would be out, and we would watch her closely. 

I've thought a lot about Clare Lindsay over the years. What was her special magic? There are two reasons and I think they're necessary for all excellent teachers. She loved her subject, and she loved us, in a patient and objective way. She had no favorites that I can remember, and she called us all by our first names pleasantly She had a way of teaching that I loved. 

"Now we could go down this path couldn't we? We could argue this, and then this, but that doesn't work because of this. No Can Do(NCD)!" She would put a big cross, and write" NCD" against what she had put down. "Right! Why not go down this new path?" And she would show us that this new way worked. It was fun. We, whether the poor students or the skilled, all did well because of her. I've never found maths difficult, and I_put_that_skill_down_to_her. 

In the fourth and fifth years,we were divided into the science and arts streams(按学生能力划分的班级), and Mrs Lindsay didn't teach us any more. But as the Leaving Certificate exams were coming, one of my friends became nervous about how much maths he didn't know. With great courage, he went to see Mrs Lindsay, and asked if she would help him prepare for his General Maths paper. "Of course!" she said, and did just that, after school, in her own time. He passed. What a good teacher!

In 2017, I was diagnosed (诊断) with Type 1 diabetes (糖尿病). And then I was told that I couldn't drive for a few weeks until my blood sugar levels had1 . 

Driving was a2 very soon after diagnosis for me. I needed to get to the chemist's shop for my diabetes medicine and get to hospital appointments, but at first couldn't, for having been told not to drive. I didn't want to be a3 , having to ask for lifts all the time. 

I found it really4 to be unable to drive, but things settled down after that and seemed to be5 for a while. 6 , to my surprise, I had severe hypoglycemia (低血糖) last year and wasn't able to7 it myself. I called an ambulance and was taken to8 , where I saw doctors and nurses I didn't know as none of them were connected to the diabetes team who usually cared for me. That's where my9 began. They advised me not to drive on the basis of this disease. They told me to call the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) and10 what they'd told me to them. This led to my licence being canceled. 

I couldn't11 all that had happened. It seemed12 . I needed answers and13 , so I phoned the Diabetes UK Helpline number I got from their website. They14 I was right in thinking that the DVLA shouldn't have15 my licence based on this hypoglycemia, according to the law. With their help, the DVLA sent me a letter admitting making a mistake. I got it back in six weeks.

 "Mommy!"I called over my shoulder. "Grace is here!" Our neighbor, Grace, stood on our front door holding a cardboard box. 

It took Mom a few minutes to get to the front door. At forty-two, her health wasn't good. She smiled at our next-door neighbor. "Come in and have a cup of coffee." "I can't stay, Nancy," Grace answered. "I just thought you all might be able to use some of this food. We get more at those giveaways than we can use." I felt relieved that Grace couldn't stay. She was friendly enough, but she and her husband drank a lot and they were given to loud arguments late at night. Sometimes, the police had to come and break up the fights. I was a little frightened of them. Grace placed the box on the kitchen table. Mom, who was not the sentimental type, got tears in her eyes."Grace! We can't take this."

Dad wandered in from the bedroom where he had been napping. He wasn't dealing very well with the unemployment at the processing plant. "We don't accept charity," he said. "Now, Jim," said Grace, "this is no time for your pride. You have two little girls and a sick wife to think of. This isn't charity. It's one neighbor helping another." I stood a little distance from the grownups, looking into each of their faces, wondering what was going to happen next. "I thank you kindly," Dad said at last.

When she was gone, we examined the contents of the box. It wasn't what we were used to. Mom smiled and said, "This will get us through for a couple of weeks." The gesture from Grace confused me because she wasn't family, or close friends with us. Even though I didn't like most of the food in that box, I knew there was something significant about this woman's generosity. She didn't have much to give, but she gave what she had at a time when our family needed help.

Rebecka Peterson, a high school math teacher, is the nation's 2023 Teacher of the Year. Her first year of teaching wasn't without its 1 ，but she remembered why she was there and wanted to bear those2 thoughts in mind. So she 3 the One Good Thing blog.

It was 4 and fun, really. Every evening, she would write on her blog, 5 "one good thing she experienced that day. She gave her blog the tagline; "Every day may not be good, but there is on good thing in every day."

She encouraged her 6 to do the same in their handwritten journals. Just a few minutes a day to7 something good that happened—that would be enough, she 8 . She believes that it will make them happier and more 9 to learn.

During her eleven years in teaching, Peterson has10 that some students find math difficult. But her efforts to make it 11 made her the 2023 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year. From there, she made the 12 to win the nation's 2023 Teacher of the Year.

Peterson has travelled around the country, talking to teaches about binging 13 back to Classrooms. Her goals include emphasizing the positive experiences students have not only with math but with learning 14 . She hopes her stories will attract new teachers to the profession and give 15 to current ones.
