If you visit the animal shelter (收容所) in Salinas, California, you'll see huge signs that have a picture of a dog and a cat on them. These {#blank#}1{#/blank#} are put in front of the shelter to catch people's attention. The signs{#blank#}2{#/blank#} people interested in the shelter and encouraged them to visit it and maybe even take a cat or a dog into their homes.

     Each year, the Salinas shelter accepts thousands of dogs and cats. The animals are {#blank#}3{#/blank#} lost ones or are left by people who can't take care of{#blank#}4{#/blank#} _. Of all the animals, some of them are taken into new homes. Some {#blank#}5{#/blank#}  are moved to other shelters. And, unluckily, some cannot be saved because they are too sick or are thought to be dangerous.

      Animal shelters {#blank#}6{#/blank#}  food, medicine, and safe places for animals. But they are not the {#blank#}7{#/blank#}  homes. The animals stay in small cages (笼子). The people{#blank#}8{#/blank#}  work at shelters do their best to care for the animals, but the animals do not always get the attention or exercise they need.

      To prevent animals from becoming homeless, pet owners should take good care of their pets. Most pet doctors also suggest people make {#blank#}9{#/blank#}  their pets have a special surgery ( 外科手术). It{#blank#}10{#/blank#} _ animals from having more babies. And that reduces（减少）the number of homeless animals.

A young man was going to spend his {#blank#}1{#/blank#} in a village.That night he decided to sleep at a small hotel near the train {#blank#}2{#/blank#} . You just shake(晃动) it at a quarter to five and it will ring,” answered the owner. The young man couldn't fall {#blank#}10{#/blank#} all the night. Because he was afraid of missing the train.

She took them{#blank#}2{#/blank#}and put them in a small cage. She looked after them with love and the birds grew strong. Every morning, they greeted her with{#blank#}3{#/blank#}wonderful song. The girl loved them very much.

    One day the girl left the cage door{#blank#}4{#/blank#} One bird flew from the cage. The girl was afraid that he would fly away. As he flew close, she caught him wildly. She was very happy{#blank#}5{#/blank#}him. Suddenly she felt the bird unable to walk. She opened her hand{#blank#}6{#/blank#}was surprised to find the bird was dead. Her love {#blank#}7{#/blank#} him.

    She noticed the other bird jumping up and down in the cage. She could feel his great{#blank#}8{#/blank#}for freedom. She lifted him from the cage and let him fly into the air. She wanted the bird to be happy. The bird circled once, {#blank#}9{#/blank#}, three times. Finally, he flew closer and landed softly on her shoulder.     Backpackers do lots of homework about the places they want to go {#blank#}3{#/blank#} setting out: food, hotels(青年旅社). things to buy and so on. They also have to know{#blank#}4{#/blank#}to catch a train.

    In their big bag they put {#blank#}5{#/blank#} like clothes and medicine. A tent and a sleeping bag are also {#blank#}6{#/blank#} when they have to live outside.

    {#blank#}7{#/blank#} backpackers choose hotels to stay in because they are cheap an comfortable. There are usually six or eight beds in {#blank#}8{#/blank#} room.
