Born and raised in a digital age, today's young people are generally tech savvy. But when it comes to basic life skills, things are quite different.

According to a recent study by YouGov,a UK—based market research company,69%18—24-year—olds in the UK have no idea how to fix the furniture.About 35%of them don't know how to sew on a button, while about 11%of them don't understand how to change a light bulb or iron clothes.

"It appears young people are losing the skills their parents took for granted,"reported the Daily Mail.

In fact, the problem is shared by young people in the United States.According to a report by Forbes in 2014,most young people don't know how to fix their bikes.Cooking is another basic life skill that has been dropped as young people are much more likely to order food deliveries than their parents.

This situation may be caused by technology."Skills at using phones and computers are the ones valued these days.and the practical hands-on skills of yesteryear are now seen to be easily replaced,''Sandi Mann,a Doctor at the University of Central Lancashire,UK,told the Mirror.

Indeed, improvements in technology have made young people unfamiliar with many basic life skills. For example, with GPS always at hand, young people have had no need to learn how to read physical maps.

However, this change has been cared by many people."If you have your doctor's degree and you can't live within your ways or go home from your job and feed yourself a healthy meal, you're not a complete student,"Chris Moore,a professor from Brigham Young University,US,told HuffPost.

That's why there's an increasing call for the return of"home ec"in the US,short for home economics, which teaches basic skills like cooking and how to wash clothes. It was very popular in the early 20th century, but was later taken out of schools and universities because the government didn't have enough money. But recently, home ec was reintroduced in a small number of schools and universities·

(1)、In the writer's view, parents are    than young people at basic life skills·

(2)、Most young people can't fix their bikes because    .
A、they think it's not valuable B、it's too difficult to learn C、they don't have enough time to learn D、they don't like fixing bikes

A、people hope"home ec"can come back to schools B、young people in the US have good basic life skills C、you'll be a complete student if you can cook for yourself D、young people needn't learn cooking because of food deliveries

Now more than one billion people in China speak putonghua, or Mandarin, as their first language. At the same time, dongbeihua, or northeast dialect (方言), has become more popular. The dialect makes even the most serious daily conversations sound fun.

Ms Ann, a Chinese language teacher, opened a class to teach middle school students dongbeihua in Heilongjiang Province. "I just hope to help the students learn more about the culture of their home town," said Ms Ann.

"It is important to inherit (继承) the northeast dialect in a new form,"she said. "For most students, they are speaking Mandarin or even English to adapt(适应) to society. They don't pay more attention to the dialect or the culture behind it. That's a pity. They need to pass it on."

Now there are over thirty students in her class. At first, some students believed it would not be difficult for the northeasterners to speak dongbeihua well. However, with the deepening of the class, the students could only speak some easy words and knew little about the meaning behind them. To increase students' interest, Ms Ann has been trying different ways. For example, she chose video clips from interesting cartoons for her students to dub (配音) them into dongbeihua.

Both Mandarin and dialect are the carriers (载体) of Chinese language and culture. Learning the dialect is learning our local culture and history.

①Have you ever thought about what's more important, looking fashionable or feeling comfortable? You might have noticed many people choosing style over comfort and some even go to extremes (极端) to follow fashion. But we should remember: being fashionable isn't everything. It's more important to be healthy.

②Some people believe that they need to be a certain size to look good. So, they start extreme diets (日常饮食) that are not good for their health. They might not eat meals or eat too little, which can make them feel sick. Is it a healthy way to live?

③Also, many girls wear shoes with very high heels. They might think high heels make them look taller. But these shoes can actually hurt their feet and make it hard to walk comfortably, and it can increase risks of falls. Some even wear tight (紧的) clothes that influence blood circulation (循环), making it hard to breathe. Should we put fashion over comfort and physical health?

④Besides, some boys and girls spend a lot of time and money changing their hair color. The material they use is usually harmful to their health. To make their hair straight or curly, they also use tools that are hot enough to burn their hair. But using these tools too often or at very high temperatures can make the hair dry or even burnt. Is it really worth it to risk our health, spending so much time and money?

⑤So, let's rethink what's really important. Is it fashion or is it our well-being? Clothes or hairstyles don't tell us anything about a person's character. Instead of spending a lot of time choosing clothes, we could use that time to do fun things with friends. And instead of following extreme diets, let's eat properly and exercise regularly. Remember, your worth is not decided by your appearance, but by who you are as a person.

Researchers at Fudan University in Shanghai have made a new type of cloth that can be used as a digital display (数字显示) . Professor Peng Huisheng and his team have spent 10 years trying to make "digital cloth" with a silver-plated yarn (银镀纱) and a kind of thread. The cloth could allow a driver to view a GPS map on their arm while driving. It could also help people communicate better if they have language barriers or disabilities.

A Gift Box Made from Mycelium

A UK company Seedlip has released (发布) a gift box that uses packaging (包装材料) made from mycelium (菌丝体). Seedlip is working with Magical Mushroom Company to make the packaging. Magical Mushroom adds mycelium to natural materials that farmers no longer need. As the mycelium tries to break the materials down, it grows threads (线) that form a strong and light material that can be used as packaging. And after being used, it breaks down naturally in about 40 days in a garden.

Bamboo is a wonderful plant for many people around the world. There are over 1,000 uses for it. People make tables, clothes, medicine and musical instruments with it. Pandas may eat bamboo every day, and people can also eat it.

The fastest growing plant in the world is bamboo. Some bamboo grows so quickly that people say they can watch it grow. The speed of growth depends on the type of bamboo, the earth and the season. Normal bamboo grows 3-10 cm a day. It usually grows in tropical (热带的) areas. It can also be found in other parts of the world. Bamboo plants are found in Asia, Australia, parts of Africa and South America.

▲    Like today, people use it because ifs very strong. They use it to build houses, boats and bridges. The Chinese made a bamboo bridge over the Min River in Sichuan, China almost 1,000 years ago. You can still visit it today. Also, bamboo is still used to build houses today, especially in China and Philippines.

As a part of history, bamboo is very important. The great scientist Thomas Edison did not invent the light bulb (灯泡), but he made it perfect. He wanted the material inside to bum for a long period of time. He tried over 1,000 different types of materials. However, none worked very well. One day, he tried to use a piece of bamboo and the light bulb lit up for over a thousand hours. This invention helped other scientists to make the modern light bulb we use today.

Dancing is popular all over the world. People dance in theaters, in parks or in their own living rooms. But Yang Liu, a girl in Guizhou, dances in an unusual place. Her stage is a single bamboo pole(竿子).

Yang is a performer of bamboo drifting(独竹漂 ). It is a traditional skill in the girl's hometown. In the past, the local people crossed the rivers by riding on a bamboo pole. Now, bamboo drifting has developed into a folk sport.

Yang started to learn bamboo drifting at the age of seven. The bamboo pole is very wet and it never stops moving. Yang fell into the water again and again. But the girl didn't want to give up. She always got back up on the pole and tried again. She practised hard every day for three years. Finally, she was able to keep her balance(平衡) on the pole.

But Yang didn't just stop there. She wanted to live out her dream of becoming a dancer on a bamboo pole. The girl practised many difficult movements on the pole. She failed endless times, but she never stopped trying. Her hard work finally paid off. Now 26, Yang has made a name for herself as a dancer on a bamboo pole. People can't believe their eyes whenever they watch her shows. Through Yang's dances, many people now know about bamboo drifting. They have found the beauty of this traditional skill.
