阅读理解

I was 12 when I came to Maywood School three years ago. Like most schools in the USA, classes here began at 8:00 a.m. However, the headmaster, Mr. Bergman, found there was a problem -- so many students were either missing the first class or arriving late. My Classmates and I often found it hard to keep our eyes open in the mornings, so lessons were no fun for us. Our grades weren't good either.

In the end, Mr. Bergman asked the school doctor for advice. The doctor said that because teenagers' bodies are growing so quickly, they need more sleep than adults (~). But their body clocks make it hard for them to go to bed before 11:00 p.m., so the best time for them to wake up is around 8:00 a.m.

Mr. Bergman decided to do an experiment (实验). He changed (改变) the start time for classes to 9:00 a.m. The school still opened at 8:00 a.m. and teachers used the extra (额外的) hour to prepare lessons.

I didn't think the new timetable (时间表) would make much difference, but I was wrong. I felt much better! Everyone's grades improved. Also, more students had time for a hot breakfast together in the dining hall. We all felt healthier and happier.

After three months, Mr. Bergman asked teachers, students and parents if they wanted to keep the new timetable. Everyone did.

Duan Jiayang, a 13-year-old student of a middle school in Shenzhen, learns the skills required to take care of vegetable fields. "We have many activities, such as placing the mulch film(地膜), "he says, "It's not easy. "

In China, many parents place a heavy focus on their children's good grades, but vocational(职业的) skills have little been cared. "Some parents do everything for their children, "says Yan Mei, an official in the middle school, adding that many students are short of the basic skills needed in their daily lives

Since March last year, the governments have launched(发布)a lot of policies(政策), requiring that colleges, middle schools and primary schools pay more attention to teaching students practical skills. Following these policies, the middle school launched an"agricultural(农业的)class base"on one of its schoolyards. Students plant fruit and vegetables on an area of land about 4, 000m²in size.

In the days coming up to the MayDay holiday, students of different grades at the school worked together in the fields, says a head teacher of a middle school. They planted watermelons, carrots and corn.

The school hopes that students will understand the food is quite precious so that they will better realize the difficulties that their parents went through.

Developed by US company OpenAI, ChatGPT has taken the internet by storm, winning 100 million users since it came out in January, 2023.  People can ask the robot to write storics and e-mails, create recipes(食谱),translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions. In its own words, it is "a language model trained in a large amount of Internet text to help users get human-like text. "

Compared with Siri or other chatbots(聊天机器人),ChatGPT úses a much bigger database(数据库)for training. It also uses stronger software and hardware to learn things by itself. For example, if it provides a wrong answer to your question, you can tell it the right one and it will make corrections.

OpenAI has now introduced a powerful new language model: GPT-4. On March 14, 2023, GPT-4 showed the world how smarter it is than GPT-3. 5. One of its best new features is that it can understand pictures.

But GPT-4's developments don't stop there.  The new language model can code(用代码编写)classic games in a matter of minutes and it can also change the tone(语气) and style based on what you ask it to do. GPT-4 is much better than the older GPT at passing tests. Some students use it in exams, which is not allowed. This may worry teachers. According to CNN, GPT-4 did reallywell on a law school test, with a score in the top 10 percent of test takers. But GPT-3. 5 only got a score in the bottom 10 percent.
