Far from the land of Antarctica (南极洲), a huge shelf of ice meets the ocean. At the underside of the shelf there lives a small fish, the Antarctic cod.

For forty years scientists have been curious about that fish. How does it live where most fish would freeze to death? It must have some secret. The Antarctic is not a comfortable place to work and research has been slow. Now it seems we have an answer.

Research was begun by cutting holes in the ice and catching the fish. Scientists studied the fish's blood and measured its freezing point.

The fish were taken from seawater that had a temperature of -1.88℃ and many tiny pieces of ice floating in it. The blood of the fish did not begin to freeze until its temperature was lowered to

-2.05℃. That small difference is enough for the fish to live at the freezing temperature of the ice-salt mixture.

The scientists' next research job was clear: Find out what in the fish's blood kept it from freezing. Their search led to some really strange thing made up of a protein (蛋白质) never before seen in the blood of a fish. When it was removed, the blood froze at seawater temperature. When it was put back, the blood again had its antifreeze quality and a lowered freezing point.

Study showed that it is an unusual kind of protein. It has many small sugar molecules(分子)held in special positions within each big protein molecule. Because of its sugar content, it is called a glycoprotein. So it has come to be called the antifreeze fish glycoprotein, or AFGP.

(1)、What is the text mainly about?
A、The terrible conditions in the Antarctic. B、A special fish living in freezing waters. C、The ice shelf around Antarctica. D、Protection of the Antarctic cod.
(2)、Why can the Antarctic cod live at the freezing temperature?
A、A special protein keeps it from freezing B、It loves to live in the ice-salt mixture C、The seawater has a temperature of -1.88℃ D、Its blood has a temperature lower than -2.05℃
(3)、What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A、A type of ice-salt mixture. B、Sugar molecule. C、Fish blood. D、A newly found protein.
(4)、What does “glyco-” in the underlined word “glycoprotein” in the last paragraph mean?

Teen Creative Writing Residency(培训) at Atlantic Center for the Arts

Join other teens for an intensive ten-day writing residency with Master Writers at the world renowned Atlantic Center for the Arts.

    The Residency

The Teen Creative Writing Residency is a summer writing residency that offers 9th―12th grade teens writing workshops and mentorship (辅导) by distinguished authors in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. The Teen Creative Writing Residency will be held at Atlantic Center from July 13 through July 26, offering 21 teens from around the country an extraordinary opportunity to expand the power of their individual voices through writing workshops with Master Writers.

    Residency Schedule

Teen writers will join three Master Writers-in-Residence, one in each of the following genres (类型) ― poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. The mentorship with the Master Writers-in-Residence will be the focus, but the chance to have conversations with the other Visiting Writers and participating Teen Writers will be valuable.

Classes meet Monday―Friday for two hours of workshops. Teen writers will have the opportunity to focus on one genre, while also exploring the other forms of literature through workshops and conversation.

    Admission

The selection process for the unique literary residency opportunity will be competitive. Atlantic Center receives the applications, and the judges evaluate writing samples. As class sizes are kept small to provide the highest quality instruction, not all qualified writers may be accepted.

    Applications should include the following:

One: Cover Letter: Your name, address, age, phone number(s)

Two: Writing Sample: 3 pages: Your writing sample should be in your preferred form of literature.

I grew up with a group of pets. As a mother, I was determined to provide my daughter with the same joyful experiences. Indeed, by the time my daughter was in elementary school, our house was known as "the neighborhood zoo". Now that she is a teenager, we've reduced the number of animals in our home, but we still live with two dogs. I can't imagine life without them.

Regardless, I have become increasingly uncomfortable with the word "pet". When I came upon the conclusion by the University of Tennessee zoologist Gordon Burghardt that the best we can do for pets is a life of "controlled deprivation (剥夺)", I wished I had never bought Lizzy, our leopard gecko(豹纹守宫). I felt a pit in my stomach when I learned that Lizzy's constant clawing at the glass wall of her tank was most likely a signal of stress. It is perhaps not surprising that she died after only two years, despite our efforts to give proper care.

The problems with the various small creatures we put into cages and tanks are relatively clear-cut. More challenging moral questions, in my view, arise in relation to our closest furry friends: dogs and cats. Unlike animals that must spend their entire life in a cage or that must struggle to adapt to a human environment, most cats and dogs have it pretty good. Yet it is likely that our dogs and cats may be suffering in ways we don't readily see, because even the most well meaning owner doesn't always provide what an animal needs.

It may be hard to recognize the harmful aspects of pet keeping when all we hear is how beloved pets are and how happy they are to be in our company. Advertisements showing golden-haired children playing with golden-haired puppies and YouTube videos of cats doing funny things make pet keeping look ever so precious.

Yet if we really care about animals, we ought to know animals are not toys — they are living, breathing, feeling creatures.

Although it's great to spend vacations seeing the world with family, friends, or a lover, traveling alone can also be completely incredible. A solo adventure has the potential to be life-changing. Here are some reasons you should travel alone at least once.

If you enjoy meeting new friends, here's your chance; you will likely find some when traveling alone, Since you won't be focused on talking to anyone you know, you'll be more likely to strike up conversations with strangers. Meeting people from different backgrounds opens our minds, expands our world, and can inspire us a lot. You may meet some amazing locals or other adventurers like yourself; either way you're bound to make some new friends during your journey.

A trip alone can ignite your creativity. Spending time alone with an open mind can be exactly what you need for your imagination to soar. Your enthusiasm and passion for life may sky-rocket from your awesome adventure.

When traveling with a partner or a group, every idea can be bounced off someone else. When you travel alone, you will learn to be decisive; you will be making every decision alone. From where to eat, to what time to wake up, to what sights to see, and which airline to use, traveling solo forces you to rely on yours truly. As you realize you can make good choices without help from others, you will likely trust your instincts more, and this new found self-assurance and confidence will be helpful in many areas of your life.

The spine (脊柱) stands at the center of your health, providing your body with structure and support. It also contains a major collection of nerves that deliver electric signals from the rest of the body to your brain. So it's important to take care of it.

Staying in a good position is one of the most important things to keep your spine healthy. A proper position means standing or sitting while keeping your spins straight, except for its natural bending. Positions play a vital part even when you're asleep. Stomach sleeping is far from a good idea. Many people prefer sleeping on their side, which is in the interests of their spine. Sleeping on your back has lots of benefits yet can cause lower back pain and put some pressure on your spine.

Staying still for too long — even if your position is good — can be hard on your back. Especially if you work at a task most of the day, it's important to get up and stretch (伸展) periodically. Strength exercises with light weights like push-ups can also help by strengthening the muscles. However, don't overdo the exercise, as repeated movements can hurt the muscles around the spine, as trying to lift heavy weights with poor technique.

Vitamins also affect the health of your spine. In particular, vitamin B and omega-3 fatty acids help keep nerves healthy. Another important part is vitamin D, which is required for strong bones. Vitamin D can come from some foods, but it's also absorbed from sunlight, so it may help to do some exercises outside. At last, many of the actions necessary to keep a spine healthy are similar to those used to protect your health in other ways. So protect your back, and the rest of the body will benefit.
