Li Shizhen was one of the most famous doctors in Chinese history. He was born in Qichun, Hubei in 1518.

Both of Li Shizhen's father and grandfather were doctors. Li Shizhen's grandfather was a country doctor who traveled in the countryside with a bag of herbs (草药) and medications and cured people. His father was a doctor who wrote several books.

Li Shizhen used to help his father in his medical practice when he was young. Li Shizhen's father wanted him to enter politics (从政). Li Shizhen studied for the exams and passed the country-level examination, but he was never able to pass the imperial examination (殿试).

When he was 38, he cured the son of the Prince of Chu and was invited to be a medical official in that court (宫廷). A few years later, he became an official at the Imperial Medical Hospital.

Even though he realized his father's dream, he didn't want to continue working for the court.

One year later, he left the court and returned to be a doctor again.

Li Shizhen was famous for his book, Compendium of Materia Medica《本草纲目》. He spent 27 years writing the book. Unluckily, Li Shizhen died before the book came out officially. It is such a successful book. Now it is still one of the most important medical books in China.

I read an article about a young boy the other day. He didn't want to go to school, so his mother let him go to the street and collect bottles or boxes {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(make) some money. It made me think of one of my own special {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(experience).

Last summer, I didn't want to go to school anymore {#blank#}3{#/blank#}I was weak at all my subjects. When I told my father {#blank#}4{#/blank#}my idea to work, he said nothing. Then I found {#blank#}5{#/blank#}part-time job during my summer vacation. The manager just asked me to send newspapers.

On the {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(one) day, I thought the work was easy. However, it made me feel sad when I went to some people's houses. They looked me up and down. I could feel that they looked down on me. I was {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(serious) hurt and felt very sad. At that time, I {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(know) how important it was to study hard. That special experience changed my idea about study.

Now, I am sitting in a bright classroom and working {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(hard) on all the lessons than. before, I always say to {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(I) working hard will help build me a bright future.

Once upon a time, two friends Tom and Mike went for a walk in the forest. On their way home, they got{#blank#}1{#/blank#}.

At first, Tom listened to Mike, but {#blank#}7{#/blank#} an hour, he didn't want to wait any more. He entered the house. Mike ran into the house fast and saw{#blank#}8{#/blank#} old man. The man said, "I know you're hungry, but I have only a {#blank#}9{#/blank#} of noodles." Mike said, "Please let my friend have it." When Tom finished the noodles, the man gave a gold basket to Mike. He said "I give it to you {#blank#}10{#/blank#}you are polite and kind."

Then, the man disappeared(消失).

Charles Lyell is a Scottish geologist. He was born into a wealthy family on 14 November 1797. His father, who was a scientist, kept the study well filled with books on every subject, including geology. Lyell was not a hard- working student at school, and he much preferred to have a walk in the New Forest. His first scientific hobby was collecting butterflies and insects, which he continued doing for many years. His observations(观察力) went far beyond those of other boys, and later this talent for collecting led to many important discoveries.

At the age of 19. Lyell entered Exeter College Oxford, where his interest in math and geology was developed. His interest in geology was encouraged by the wonderful lectures of William Buckland who was widely known for his effort to prove Noah's Flood by the studies of fossils. Lyell spent his long vacations travelling and making geological studies.

In 1827, Lyell started a full- time job in geology and began to plan a book which included natural explanations for geological things. He explored in Italy. Poor roads and hotels made his travel very difficult, but in the area around Mount Etna he finally confirmed his guess and got the answer he wanted.

Returning to London, he set to work immediately on his book, Principles of Geology, the first volume of which was published in July 1830. Charles Darwin once mentioned the book and said," Historians in the future will realize that the book has caused a revolution(革命) in the natural science." The book also had some influence on Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution.

In 1848, Lyell was knighted for his scientific achievements. Lyell became more and more famous and he received many awards in his lifetime.

Actually, frogs always15 you in the end. It's hard to escape from them.
