Winston Churchill once said, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." These are words that millions （百万） of volunteers around the world could certainly agree with.

People who volunteer spend their time offering help to others and don't ask for pay. For example, animal lovers may volunteer at an animal centre to help improve the treatment （治疗） of animals.

Volunteering allows volunteers to meet new people, try out new skills and ex-plore career choices（职业选择）. For young adults, valuable （有价值的） lessons may also be learned through volunteering.

Take Andrew Makhoul, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, as an exam-ple. Andrew didn't spend his last spring break relaxing. Instead, the 19-year-old boy decided to do something for people who were less lucky than himself. He travelled to an orphanage（孤儿院） in Guatemala. It is in one of the poorest parts of the area. And it depends on volunteers to stay open.

Andrew doesn't speak much Spanish, but he found communication wasn't a problem. "You communicated with love," according to an article on his university's website. And what he gave out, he got back. "You could see love when you looked in their eyes." Andrew's first time as a volunteer only lasted a week , but by the end of that week, he knew he'd be back soon because he saw love and hope.

Sherry Anderson once wrote, "Volunteers don't get paid, not because they're worthless ( 无价值的） , but because they're priceless." And this is perhaps why volunteers all around the world keep doing what they do-their work is "priceless".

There have been accidents in recent years where many people dead because of unsafe and crowed situations. Getting caught in large crowds can be deadly. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

Make full preparations. Before you attend a large event with lots of people, choose comfortable shoes and clothes. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Beside it is necessary know where you can get out quickly such as the exit doors, windows or hallways. Leave right away if you find there are too many people in the place.

Find somewhere away from the crowd. Staying at the edge(边缘) of a crowd allows you to get away more quickly. If danger truly happens, look for places to protect yourself as quickly as possible. At an indoor site, this might be a side hallway or a closet. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

Keep moving with the crowd. If you can't take cover, keep moving with the crowd. As you move forward, it's best to move in a diagonal(对角线的) direction so you are likely to find a place to protect yourself. Don't try to pick up anything on the ground. Keep standing up and put your arms up so that you can have some room for breathing.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#} If you fall down, don't be nervous. Calm down and try to lie on your left to protect your heart and lungs. Cover your head with your arms and hands. It's a simple pose, but it's surprisingly useful and possibly life-saving.

Table manners

All societies have customs about how to eat politely. In English, we call these customs "table manners". Based on culture and location, table manners can be quite different from place to place. It's very interesting! {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

●In some cultures, it's polite to serve food to guests, while in other cultures, people don't do this because it makes the guests feel like they are being forced to eat.

●In most East Asian countries, people use chopsticks at the table. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Do you know that in some places people simply use their hands to eat? And in some places, only their right hand?

●In Russia, it's polite to leave a bit of food on your plate to show the host that there was plenty to eat. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} It means you enjoyed the food.

Hello! My name is Sara and I'm thirteen years old. I'm from France. My best friend is Mary. She is from Germany and one year older than me. She came to France with her family five years ago. At the be- ginning (开始) she couldn't speak French well but now it's different. She's very hard-working at school and she's fluent in French now,

Mount Huashan is a beautiful mountain in China. It is famous for its natural and narrow(狭窄的) {#blank#}1{#/blank#} . Here is some advice on climbing it. 

The best time for visiting is from April to October. Taking a pair of gloves can help you to hold the iron chains(铁链). Sports shoes {#blank#}2{#/blank#} soft and flat soles(鞋底) are the best for climbing. It is important to take enough water and food. You can also buy them at the stores along the way when you are{#blank#}3{#/blank#} or hungry. A bottle of water is about 10 yuan and a bowl of noodles is about25 yuan. And they are about 35 yuan in{#blank#}4{#/blank#}. 

You shouldn't miss the sunrise here. East Peak is the best place to see it, and you need to {#blank#}5{#/blank#} up before 5:30 am. It could be cold at the {#blank#}6{#/blank#} of the mountain. So be {#blank#}7{#/blank#} to bring warm clothes. After watching the sunrise, you can go hiking(远足) or do something else. It  {#blank#}8{#/blank#} on you. I hope this trip will bring you much {#blank#}9{#/blank#} .
