There's an elephant living in a forest. He's very beautiful and clever. He usually helps people who get lost in the forest, so people in the countryside all like him very much.

One day, a young man came to the countryside. He knew the elephant from the farmers and he wanted to catch him. Then he went to the forest and looked for the elephant. After two days, he saw the elephant and ran after him. But the elephant ran so fast. The young man couldn't catch him. The elephant ran from morning to night. He was very tired, so he hid (躲藏) behind the trees. The young man couldn't see him.

After some time, the young man got lost in the forest and fell into a pool. No one could help him out. The elephant saw that and saved him. The young man thanked the elephant and said, "I'm sorry for what I do at first. Please tell me what you want me to do for you." The elephant said, "I only want to stop catching animals and save them."

On the evening of July 31, 2024, a great moment happened at the swimming event of the Paris Olympics. Pan Zhanle, a Chinese swimmer, won the gold medal in the men's 100- meter freestyle(自由式).

Before the competition, the Chinese team faced a lot of 1 . The past results were not very good and many people didn't 2 they could win. But Pan Zhanle was 3 and ready to fight.

When the race started, Pan Zhanle jumped into the water 4 . In the first 50 meters, he showed 5 power and took the lead. His strokes(划水动作) were powerful and his breathing was regular.

In the second half of the race, it became very6 . Other swimmers tried hard to catch up, but Pan Zhanle 7 his lead with great skills and strong will.

Near the end, everyone was very nervous. Pan Zhanle swam as fast as he could and touched the wall8 with a wonderful time of 46.40 seconds. He broke the world record and won the gold medal.

After the race, Pan Zhanle was very excited. He said in an interview, " There were some unfriendly situations before,9 they made me more determined (决心). I wanted to show the power of Chinese10 !"

Once there was a little boy. He was famous as a fast 1 in his village. He thought nothing was more important than winning every running race(比赛), because he wanted to become more 2 .

One day, the boy joined a running race in his village. He 3 the 100, 200 and 50- meter races without any problem. He got a great 4 and was very excited. So he thought no one was 5 than him.

But his grandfather walked towards him and asked him to have a 6 with an old man and a blind(瞎的) girl. The boy thought it was a little 7 but accepted.

In the race, the boy finished first, but the old man and the blind girl were still at the starting line. He was happy and waved his hands at people. But they said 8 .

" Why are people not cheering for 9 like before? " he asked his grandfather.

The grandfather said "10 the race again with them. But this time, all of you should cross the finishing line at the same time".

The boy didn't know why 11 he agreed to the race.

During the second race, the boy took the hands of the old man and the blind girl and walked 12 with them to the finishing line. The people gave them a great cheer.

The boy asked his grandfather, " For whom are the people cheering? Is it for me, or them? "

The grandfather 13 and said, " They did not cheer for any one of you. They cheered for 14 you all ran the race together."

Facing the race of life, the most important thing is not just 15 , but how you run the race.

Old Mother Wind was talking with the tall tree in the forest, "I've just passed by the grass, and there I saw the best thing in the world. "

Bobby Mouse happened to sit under the tree and heard those 1 . " The best thing in the world—What can that be?" he 2 . "Well, it must be plenty of delicious nuts! I'll go and find it. " Then Bobby Mouse ran 3 the grass. He was running so 4 that he didn't see Peter Rabbit until Peter Rabbit jumped out. He asked, "5 are you going in such a hurry?"

"To find the best thing in the world, " Bobby Mouse replied. 

"The best thing in the world? I really want to 6 carrots(胡萝卜). I'm so hungry. That must be lots of carrots. I'll go with 7 , " Peter Rabbit said to Bobby Mouse and ran after him. 

Before long, they met Johnny Chuck, who asked the same question as Peter Rabbit just did. 

"To find the 8 thing in the world! Would you like to join us?" they shouted. 

"The best thing in the world?" said Johnny Chuck. "9 is more enjoyable than my own little home, the warm sunshine and the beautiful blue sky. I will 10 go with you!" So he stayed at home and played among flowers with Old Mother Wind happily. 

When Bobby Mouse and Peter Rabbit finally reached the grass, they had run far and fast all day long but still they didn't find the best thing in the world. When the 11 came, they started going back home. Now they didn't hurry in the dark 12 they were very tired and hungry. 

They came across Old Mother Wind halfway home. 

"Did you 13 the best thing in the world?" asked Old Mother Wind. 

"No!" Their 14 sounded very sad. 

"Johnny Chuck has it, " she said. " It is being 15 with the things you have. The best thing in the world is already around you. "

 When I was about five, like most children, I was curious(好奇的) to everything. Sitting in front of my crayons, I wanted to" discover" what was inside them. So I cut them in two. Disappointedly, I found nothing but more crayon inside of them. When I was a little older, I was interested in the inner parts of pens, televisions and so on. In fact, my childhood interest in the building blocks(构成要素) of things led me to work in engineering. 

I spent six years as part of the team that designed   the Shard — the 2nd highest building in Europe. After   having explored the big, I decided to turn to the small. I realized it was the seven key elements form the basis of the modern world: the spring, the pump, string, the nail, the wheel, the lens and the magnet. They have created and changed our technology, which have also had a big influence on our history, society, communication, transportation, arts and culture. For example, the speaker on my phone through which I could hear the voices depended on a magnet. Even as I thought about more larger objects — factories, cars, satellites and so on — again and again, I came back to the same seven key elements. 

 Look around yourself and ask questions about what you see: awaken that childhood curiosity. Hopefully, this will encourage you to explore the world of engineering, and is something which will lead you to form a better understanding of the building blocks of our world. 

"Are you listening, Simon? " Simon's teacher asked. It was a pretty usual question. Simon shook his head, smiling. He hardly listened or tried hard in class. Talking was so much fun. He wanted to be heard rather than listen.

"Listen, and you' ll learn something." Mrs. Jacobs tried every day, but Simon never paid attention.

 That evening, his throat really hurt. The next morning, when he opened his mouth to say"Good morning", nothing came out but a croak(低沉而沙哑的声音).

 Simon's mother looked at him. "Honey, you' ve lost your voice "

"Can I stay home?" He tried to ask, but words didn't come out. Instead, his mother checked him for a fever and decided it was good for him to go to school, even if he couldn't talk.

 When he got to school, Mrs. Jacobs said"Hello" to him, and he just nodded. When his friends asked him what TV shows he watched last night, he just shrugged(耸肩). By the time the bell rang for class, almost everyone was looking at him as if he'd grown a third eye.

 Penny raised her hand. "Mrs Jacobs, why isn't Simon talking?"

"He never stops talking," Richard said worriedly. Everyone started talking at once. They were excited, worried, and surprised.

 Simon sat in class, bored. He watched them talk to each other as if the teacher wasn't there, but he couldn't even do that. In math class he could hold up fingers if the answer was less than 10, but that wasn't fun. He decided to try to pay attention.

 He could do his homework that night. It gave him TV and game time with his work all done.

 The next day, even though his voice was coming back, he stayed quiet again. The third day, he could talk fine, but he listened and raised his hand to speak.

 What a difference that one day made!
