I moved here three years ago, and because of my business, I needed to fly both to China and the United States often. When I traveled alone, I felt lonely because I didn't speak English well. I made a decision that I had to learn English well.

I came to Rita Colina's class at the Chinese Community Center in Houston. Before the class, I always walked away when I met any foreigner. It's completely different now. I try to communicate with Americans in English by myself. Now I like to talk to foreigners. Not only the life becomes more flexible, but also I really love to live here.

I learn English in four ways:

First of all, I listen to what the teacher teaches in class. Then I keep speaking during the class.

Second, I do my homework right away when I get home. I memorize at least five vocabulary words every day.

Third, I listen to American radio stations, and I watch the TV news and other American programs with my family every day. I ask them whatever I don't know.

Finally, I go to American stores as often as possible so I will have more chances to learn more new words, and find any chance to talk to Americans in English.

Anyway, the most important thing is not to be afraid to open your mouth. It doesn't matter even though you speak incorrectly. It's the key, you know.

One dull afternoon，Hannah came in with a telegram. 

"It's one of the worst telegram things，Mom，"she said. 

Mrs. March read two lines of it and dropped back into her chair. Laurie rushed downstairs for water，and Jo read aloud，in a frightened voice…

Mrs. March，

Your husband is very ill. Come at once.

How suddenly the whole world seemed to change！For several minutes there was nothing but sound of crying in the room. Poor Hannah was the first to recover（恢复） and she said，"Get your things ready right away，Mom. "Mrs. March again read the message over，saying "I shall go at once，but it may be too late. Oh，girls，girls，help me to bear it！"

"Where's Laurie？"she asked presently. 

"Here，ma'am. Oh，let me do something！"cried the boy，hurrying from the next room. 

"Send a telegram saying I will come at once. The next train goes early in the morning. I'll take that. "

"Leave a note at Aunt March's. Jo，give me that pen and paper. "Jo well knew that money must be borrowed for the long，sad journey，and she felt as if she could do a little for her father. 

The short afternoon passed quickly. All other things were done. However，Jo came back with a mixture of fun and fear，satisfaction and regret in it，saying "That's my contribution（贡献） toward making father comfortable and bring him home！"

"My dear，where did you get it？Twenty－five dollars！Jo，I hope you haven't done anything stupid？"

"No，it's mine honestly. I didn't beg，borrow，or steal it. I earned it，and I don't think you'll blame me，for I only sold what was my own. "

As she spoke，Jo took off her bonnet and they were shocked to find all her hair was cut short. 

Recently, a junior high school sent several students back home because they broke the school uniform(校服) rules. Should students wear school uniforms? The Young World magazine held a discussion on this topic. 

Kennedy: The school uniform is very important, because it always reminds me that I am supposed to go out of my way to study hard. It also helps prevent school bullying(欺凌). If everyone wears the same clothes, it is impossible to laugh at other people's clothing. 

Manson: The uniform has to be got through hard work. Students should start school with no uniforms. As they make progress at school, they start wearing it. I always think children need to be proud of their schools. The uniform is important for that. So, make students work hard to get it! If they don't behave(表现) well, they should not be allowed to get one. 

Moorhead: In my opinion, kids don't have to wear uniforms. There should be more choices open to kids in education. They should develop their own independence and just be themselves. Their personalities(个性) would be shown through their own clothes at school. And different dress could be one way of showing their understanding of beauty. Besides, they make the school lively and colourful. 

Patrick: I can see the advantages of wearing school uniforms. They play a very important role in managing schools. However, a school should not depend heavily on uniforms to improve students' behaviour. Teaching them how to express themselves with confidence is more important. 

Some children in Africa(非洲) don't have school things. You can help them. Look! They are very 1 when they get some school things from others. 

Bill is very happy. He gets a new 2 . He can put his pencils in it now. Jane gets a 3 . She always wants a notebook but her parents can't buy one for her because they are too poor(贫穷的). This is her 4 notebook. What's that in Mike's hand? Oh, it's a story book! Mike likes 5 very much. He wants more books! Little Tommy 6 some pencils. Now he can write with a pencil.
