The late president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, once said: "If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart. "

Mandela understood that our mother language is a very close thing to us. For people who speak an ancient tongue as their mother language, it helps them keep their traditions. Their language is their main connection with their ancestors(祖先). 

So it's a serious thing when a language disappears. Over the last century, more than 400 languages have died out. Some languages are now spoken only by a few dozen people, like Yagan in Chile. Africa and South America are also places where many languages are dying. 

Why are humans speaking fewer languages than we once did? The answer has to do with globalization (全球化). Nowadays, it's more useful to speak certain languages - English is one example - rather than others. This has killed some languages, usually ones spoken by fewer or less influential people. 

But some people aren't prepared to accept a planet with fewer and fewer languages. The United Nations has set Feb 21 as International Mother Language Day. The organization wants people to pay more attention to dying languages. 

This work is very important. As US writer Rita Mae Brown wrote, "Language is the roadmap of a culture. It tells where its people come from and where they are going. "

There was a park near my home. But I didn't go there very often. Many people said there was nothing special. One afternoon I went into the park and found it was really small. I walked quickly and found myself standing in front of two paths (小径).

"Which way should I go?" I asked myself. I looked at one way, then the other.The left one was wide and clean. There were lots of flowers on both sides of the path. Though the flowers weren't very beautiful, they made me feel good. I decided to take this path. But wait! I looked at the right one. The path didn't look nice. It seemed it had not been cleaned for months. Grass grew every where. For a long time I couldn't make up my mind.

After a while, a strange feeling made me follow the dirty path. It wasn't nice, but I didn't want to give up. At last, I came to the end of the path. Ah! There was a small garden there. It was beautiful, perhaps the most beautiful garden I had ever seen. There were trees, flowers and chairs. I thought it was the nicest part of the park.

Many people told me that there was nothing much to see in the park. Now I'd like to tell them that if they had followed the right way, they would have felt differently. But when I told them about what I had seen in the park, they just smiled at me without saying a word. ____. They couldn't even remember that path because it was so small.

My trip to the park that day made me understand something about life. Don't be afraid to choose a different path. You may get a big surprise!

Last Sunday evening, my parents went out for a walk with my sister. But I studied alone at home because I would have an English test. Suddenly. I saw bright light in my neighbor's kitchen. I thought he was cooking, so I went on studying. 

Soon, there was a terrible smell in the air and I thought something was wrong. I went out and saw fire coming out of my neighbor's kitchen. So I shouted "Fire, Fire!" But no one heard or came out. 

I ran quickly to my house to call 911, and then I rang my neighbor's doorbell, knocked at the door, but there was no response. I got into the house through the window and found my neighbor sleeping in his bedroom. I woke him up and we rushed out of the house together. 

We tried our best to pour water through the kitchen window, but the fire was too heavy. Luckuly, the firemen came and put out the fire quickly. When my parents came back, they found I was dirty and tired. After my neighbor told them the whole story, they were happy and said I was a brave boy. 

Getting excited over the Christmas ads (广告) becomes a big tradition for people in the UK. Sainsbury's, the second largest supermarket in theUK, shared its ad called Mog the Cat. The ad was known as"the best Christmas ad ever" according to Twitter. 

The ad is about a cat of the Thomas family. In the ad, the cat blew (吹) up the Christmas tree and almost burned(烧) the house. Luckily, she succeeded in phoning the fire service and saved the house.  ▲  Mog felt sorry. As they were worried, the neighbours came together to help the family clean up and enjoy Christmas dinner. Its ending will make you feel all sweet inside. It also carries the saying of Sainsbury's"Christmas is for sharing". 

Another reason why the ad is popular is that Mog the Cat is the star of a much- loved children's book. The writer Kerr herself appears in this ad as a neighbour of the Thomas family. This ad also tells us some fire safety facts. 

Twitters talked about and enjoyed the ad. One little boy named Jim wrote that the ad was the best Christmas gift he got this year. Jill mixed feelings with the ad. She wrote this ad made her laugh and cry at the same time. And she said, "I don't even like cats. " Another woman wrote, "So far, the Christmas ad of Sainsbury's is the best I've seen this year". People like the ad not only for the funny story but also for the spirit (精神) of Christmas it shows. 

 My name is Susan. I am a student of Sunny Middle School. It's a nice and beautiful school. Here is a map of it.

 Look at the map of our school. This is the music hall, just next to the science building. The music hall is a yellow building with two floors. We often listen to music in it. Sometimes, we have music lessons in it, too. The science building is vellow, too. A small shop is between the science building and the teachers' building. We can buy many kinds of school things in it. The teachers' building is white. Our teachers often correct(批改) our homework or prepare (准备) lessons in it. In front of the teachers' building is the school hall. It's new and nice. We often have parties or speeches(演讲) in it. There is a large sports field in our school. All the students go there and do exercises together in the morning. The classroom building is between the school hall and the sports field. We spend most of the time in our classroom. It's big and clean.

I love my school. It's a beautiful place and I can learn a lot in it.

I'm Rita. My grandmother is 80 years old. That's really old! We have a birthday party for her every year. All my uncles and aunts come to the party. Every time, my aunt Laura makes a big cake with many candles on it. We sing the birthday song and eat the cake together.

Grandma is very old, but she is doing well. Her ears are not good, but she can see very well. Watering flowers is her favorite. She often says the flowers are like her children, and she likes watching them grow. She also works on the farm every day. She gives us a lot of vegetables. We take photos when eating them, because seeing us eat her vegetables makes her happy.
