Lisa has always been overweight. She wanted to lose weight, not just because she wanted to 1 more beautiful and healthier, but also because it would make life easier. For example, it was 2 for Lisa to find ready-made clothes that would fit. She had to ask a tailor(裁缝) to make clothes that were large enough. At school, she needed a special chair which was bigger and 3 than the other chairs. If she went for a walk, she got tired very quickly. She was also unhappy about the way people 4 her sometimes. "People look at me and even make fun of me. That's5 ! It's true that I'm overweight, but I don't think people should treat me differently because I'm big. I can't enjoy having dinner with my friends because I'm afraid of getting fatter. " Her friends and family 6 made fun of her. They tried to help her 7 . They wanted her to be happy and healthy. Sometimes when Lisa was feeling sad, she didn't want to speak to anyone.

But now things are quite different. Last month her classmates were preparing for the School 8  Week. Someone advised Lisa to play the lead role of the proud Queen(女王) who was tall and fat. Lisa 9  it and practiced a lot. 

Soon after the play, Lisa became the 10 ! She did so well that everybody remembered the proud Queen. They stood around her and said"Congratulations!"to her. She even won the School Best Actress Award for her wonderful performance.

Now Lisa doesn't worry about being fat any more. She believes in the English saying"Every dog has its day. "

Back in New York, I am fighting fires as the assistant captain (副队长) of a volunteer fire company.

I still remember my first fire. I was the second volunteer on the scene (现场). The captain was talking with the homeowner, who was surely having one of the worst days of her life. At midnight, she was standing outside in the heavy rain, under an umbrella, barefoot (赤脚的), while her house was in flames (在燃烧中). The other volunteer, who had arrived just before me, was asked to go inside and save the homeowner's dog. The captain then waved (招手) me over. He said, "Bezos, I need you to go upstairs past the fire, and get this woman a pair of shoes." So, not exactly what I was hoping for, but off I went up the stairs, down the hall, past the "real" firefighters, who were pretty much done putting out the fire at this point, into the bedroom to get a pair of shoes.

Now I know what you're thinking, but I'm no hero. (Laughter) I carried the shoes downstairs where I met the other volunteer with the valuable dog. We took our treasures outside to the homeowner, where, not surprisingly, his received much more attention than mine.

A few weeks later, the company received a letter from the homeowner thanking us for saving her home. The act of kindness she noted above all others was that someone had even gotten her a pair of shoes.

Here, I would offer this reminder: don't wait. Don't wait until you make your first million to make a difference in somebody's life. If you have something to give, give it now.

Not every day is going to offer us a chance to save somebody's life, but every day offers us an opportunity to affect (影响) one. So get in the game. Save the shoes.

 Zhu Yanjun is a migrant worker ( 农民工) from northwest China's Gansu Province. Recently the 50-year-old man took part in the 2023 Chinese Poetry Congressand won the second place in the final. 

 Zhu was born in a family of farmers. As a young boy, Zhu would help his father do farm work after finishing classes. In 1983, as a first grader in a primary school, he met poetry for the first time in a Chinese class. Since then, he has been in love with poems. 

 After noticing Zhu's interest, his father spent some money buying him poetry collections though his family was poor. During junior high school, some of his classmates dropped out of school and moved to other cities to look for jobs. Zhu listened to them talking about the outside world during holidays. "I also want to leave my hometown to explore the world. " he said. 

 After graduating from junior high school in 1992, Zhu stopped his schooling. He began to work as a migrant worker. But he did not stop reading poems. In the past years, Zhu has worked in seven cities in China. Whenever he arrives in a city, he first visits the bookstores and libraries there. Although he is busy working during the day, he spends his time at noon and in the evening reading poems. He knows over 1000 poems by heart and the lines help him keep a calm mind. 

 In 2023, with the encouragement of his wife, Zhu decided to sign up for the 2023 Chinese Poetry Congress. To his surprise, he made it to the final. Under his influence, his son and daughter have developed a great interest in poetry. They have been accepted by universities away from their hometown. "I hope more people will also fall in love with poetry. " said Zhu, adding that he will continue learning poetry. 

21-year-old Ben Carpenter from Michigan, US has trouble in walking.1 around the town he uses a wheelchair.

One day, Ben was crossing a road when a big truck2 out of a gas station. The driver didn't see Ben. The driver's cab was very high 3 Ben was very low down the road.

A moment later the truck bumped into the back of Ben's wheelchair.4 wheelchair became stuck in the front of the truck. The truck continued down the road. Soon it reached a speed of 50 mph. But the driver still knew 5 about the man in the wheelchair.

At the same time, drivers in the cars 6 in the opposite direction could see Mr Carpenter in his wheelchair. Many people thought they were dreaming,7 phoned the police.

At first, the police thought it was a joke. But the calls about the wheelchair kept coming.

8 , a police car was travelling down the same road in the opposite direction. The police car turned and finally managed to make the truck 9 .

When the driver saw this, he was too shocked 10 a word. Surprisingly, the young "passenger" was quite relaxed. "He lost his hat," said one police office, "but he didn't get hurt."

Many people like visiting new places and seeing new things. But before taking a trip, we all have to decide who we want to travel with: is it better to go with family, with friends, or alone?

Traveling with family can be hard work and you may argue a lot. Not everyone in the family wants to do the same things. But traveling with family can be very cheap. And traveling with parents can make you feel more comfortable and relaxed. They won't let you do anything dangerous. Traveling with friends isn't usually expensive, but money always plays an important role. It's normal for everyone to have different budgets(预算) and there needs to be lots of compromise(妥协). This may cause problems. But traveling with friends can be great fun. It also helps you learn more about your friends, and sharing experiences can keep your friendship (友谊). 

When deciding who to travel with, young adults can choose to travel alone. Traveling alone has advantages. For example, you don't have to compromise on money problems. You can choose what you want to do and it can also be a good way to meet new people. However, it can be lonely and sometimes dangerous. When you're ill or having trouble, nobody will be there to help you.

"Let's go home," Liam said to his little sister, Flora, after their art class one Saturday morning. We' re late for 1 ."

 The night before, it had snowed hard. They had difficulty walking to their cozy home on Adelaide Street, passing through an empty building site. Suddenly, Liam heard a loud thud(砰的一声). He 2 only to see that Flora was gone. His sister had fallen into a deep hole. "Help!" she cried.

 Liam looked around, but no one was in sight.

"Climb up the sides!" Liam 3 . His sister tried climbing up the hole, but failed. Then, he saw a huge tree nearby. He found the 4 tree branch and broke it off. He showed it to Flora."Get hold of the tree branch!" Liam pleaded.

 They hugged and after walking for what felt like forever, their cozy red 15 was finally in sight..
