Once upon a time, there was a young man who liked puppets (木偶) so much that he became an apprentice(学徒) to a master puppet-maker. Sadly, the young man was not so clever, and his teacher and the other apprentices were always telling him he had no talent for making puppets, and that he would achieve nothing in making puppets.

Even so, he was fond of it so much that he worked day after day to improve himself. Though he made every effort, they would always find something wrong with his puppets, and the poor puppets ended up being thrown out of the workshop.

The young man wasn't going to give up, so he decided that from then on he would spend all his time making just one kind of puppet. Whenever he found a fault in his puppet he would throw it away and start again. Years passed, and with each new attempt his puppet became a little bit better. By that time, his puppet was much better than anything that the other apprentices could make, but he kept making improvements. Living like that, the man wasn't making any money, and many people laughed at how poor he was.

By the time he was an old man, his puppet was truly wonderful. Finally, after so many years of work, he finished work on his puppet, and said, "I can't find anything wrong with it. This time it is perfect." And for the first time in all those years, instead of throwing his puppet away, he put it up on the shelf, feeling truly satisfied and cheerful.

It is well-known that the perfect puppet, Pinocchio, came to life after that, had a thousand adventures, and gave that old man –whose name was Geppetto—more joy than any other famous puppet—maker had ever got from any of their creations.

Kathy could still remember the night she had to leave her home in Hungary. It was the beginning of World War(战争)II and her family had to leave their country as soon as possible. She quickly filled(充满)a bag with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and her treasure(珍宝)—a beautiful silk scarf.

Kathy and her best friend, Monica, had asked their parents to buy them matching scarves. They each would wear the scarves as a symbol(象征)of their friendship. Kathy had no idea that she was going to America that night and would not be returning.

Kathy kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview(面试)for good luck. And with the scarf, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview.

That afternoon Eliza left the interview, feeling sure that she had got the job. So she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. As she was sitting at her table, she felt someone looking at her. Sitting next to her was an old woman, who could not take her eyes away from her.

"I'm sorry, do I know you?" Eliza asked.

"I`m sorry, dear, but you make me think of someone I once knew," the old woman replied. "My best friend looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like the one you're wearing around your neck. Eliza listened carefullywith her eyes and mouth wide open. She had heard stories of her grandmother's best friend and knew the meaning of the scarf.

"My name's Monica, dear. I lived in Hungary as a child, but my family had to leave when I was fourteen years old. I've been living here in California from then on." said the old woman.

Eliza could not believe her ears…

 阅读下列短文,从下面每小题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Oliver Twist was brought up in the workhouse where only the poor and homeless lived. He was pale, thin and short for his age. The boys ate meals in a large stone hall. They ate a bowl of thin soup three times a day, with half a piece of bread on Sundays. The boys were always hungry and ate everything up. The bowls never needed washing. The boys polished(擦亮) them with their spoons(勺子) until they shone.

The boys got hungrier and hungrier until one day they intended to do something . One boy had to ask for more food that evening. So they decided who would go by drawing lots. Each boy took a piece of paper and anyone who got paper with a mark on it would do that. It turned out that Oliver Twist was that boy.

The evening arrived, the soup was served, and soon the bowls were empty again in a few seconds. The boys were desperate(绝望) with hunger. With fear, Oliver went up to the master who was a fat and healthy man. He held up his bowl and said, "Please, sir,I want some more."

The master turned very pale when he heard Oliver's words. "What?" said the master in a surprising voice.

"Please, sir," repeated Oliver, "Would you please give me more? I want some more." The master hit him with the spoon heavily, then took Oliver's arms and shouted to tell the board (理事会).

"He asked for more?" Mr Limbkins, the fattest board member, asked in horror. "The boy is ungrateful!""That boy will be hanged in the future!" said another board member. Oliver was then locked up in a dark room.
