My Meaningful Weekend

Do you know that almost each Chinese dish has its own story behind it? Now read the following {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (story) about jiaozi — Chinese dumplings.

The first story of jiaozi is from the Eastern Han Dynasty(东汉). It is about Zhang Zhongjing, {#blank#}2{#/blank#} famous doctor in Chinese history. Zhang made jiaozi by {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (he) for the first time to help homeless people. Thanks to him, a lot of people became much {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (health) in cold winter.

The {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (two) story about jiaozi has to do with Wang Xizhi, a calligrapher(书法家) in ancient(古代的) China. When Wang Xizhi was young, his calligraphy was {#blank#}6{#/blank#} wonderful that many people liked it. Wang {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (think) his calligraphy was good enough and he began to spend little time practicing it. One day Wang saw an old woman making jiaozi. Her jiaozi was in good shape and tasted delicious. Wang Xizhi asked her how long it took her {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (make) such great jiaozi. She said, "Almost my life. {#blank#}9{#/blank#} someone wants to be really good at something, he needs to spend his life doing that." Hearing that, Wang Xizhi knew that he should keep studying calligraphy. He spent all his time {#blank#}10{#/blank#} it and became a great calligrapher.

Sally was very nervous. It was her first day in the new school, and lunch was only thirty minutes away. At lunch, most students talk with friends, get to know what interesting things everyone is doing, and, of course, 1 . Sally, however, didn't know anyone or anything.

Soon, there was a terrible smell in the air and I thought something was wrong. I went out and saw fire coming out of my neighbour's kitchen. So I shouted "Fire! Fire!" But no one heard or came out. 

I ran quickly into my house to call 119, and then I rang my neighbour's doorbell and knocked at the door, but still there was no answer. I got into the house through the window and found my neighbour sleeping in his bedroom. I woke him up and we rushed out of the house together immediately. 

We tried our best to pour（泼）water through the kitchen window, but the fire was too big. Luckily, the firemen came and put out the fire quickly. When my parents came back, they found I was dirty and tired. After my neighbour told them the whole story, they were happy and said I was a brave（勇敢的）boy.

How to speak in a polite way? Usually in English polite questions are longer, including expressions such as" Could you please…?" or" Can I ask…?" It s{#blank#}1{#/blank#} more polite to say, "Peter, could you please l{#blank#}2{#/blank#} me your pen? I forgot to bring mine. " Sometimes, we might even need to s{#blank#}3{#/blank#} some time leading into a question or a request. For example, if you want to stop a s{#blank#}4{#/blank#} in the street, we might first say, "Excuse me, I wonder if you can help me" or"I'm sorry to trouble you but, " before asking he or she for help. 

Mandy, an {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(印度) girl , is one of my roommates in the university in America. At the beginning of the term, she hurt many students' hearts because she wasn't good at English at first. Then she made many friends with English {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(说某种语言的人) in the Language Club. And her English has improved a lot. 

Also many jobs require us to use polite expressions, such as {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(秘书). Because they always meet important persons with their {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(老板). It's one of the secrets to make a deal. 

It might seem that speaking politely is more difficult than speaking {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(直接地), and in a way this may be true. H{#blank#}10{#/blank#}, in order not to offend(冒犯) people, learning about language etiquette(礼节) is just as important as learning grammar or vocabulary. And doing this will also help you become better at English, or any other language you wish to speak.
