Second–hand Bookshops

Here is a story about a bookshop. The bookshop was very large and it included many different books. A poor student found a very helpful book in the shop，but it was too e{#blank#}1{#/blank#} for him to buy. He couldn't get it from the library，either. So he went to the shop to read a little a time everyday. The bookshop was open for 24 hours so he could go there a{#blank#}2{#/blank#}. He usually took a notebook with him and c{#blank#}3{#/blank#} down some useful information from the book. One day， h{#blank#}4{#/blank#}，he couldn't find the book from its usual place. "Maybe the bookstore s{#blank#}5{#/blank#} it this morning to others，"the student thought and was leaving when he saw an assistant smiling at him. To his surprise，the assistant pointed to the book in a corner. "I put the book there so that you can find it easily，"said the assistant. The student went on with his reading after saying thanks to the assistant. 

Two days before Christmas I went out for shopping in town. It was pretty late 1 I walked out of the supermarket. I quickly put all the shopping bags 2 my car and started to drive home. 

When I was waiting for the 3 , looked out of the window and saw many homeless people on the empty pavement (人行道). Some of them 4 on the pavement and sleeping. They had very little 5 themselves on the cold night. I had pity on them. Suddenly, I had 6 idea. 

The next day I went to shops and bought as 7 blankets (毛毯) as possible. In the evening, I drove to the place where I had seen the homeless people the night before. I walked up to them and 8 each a blanket. They all looked at me in surprise. One lady kept hugging the warm blanket and saying over and over again 9 soft and warm the blanket was. I also brought some food for them. I felt really happy when I saw the smiles on 10 faces. And I thought the smiles were the best Christmas presents l had ever received. I have done this every Christmas Eve since then. 

Students sometimes fight (打架) at school. But how can you keep away from a fight? Here's something you can do. 

Be calm (冷静). Sometimes, you feel so angry that you really want to teach somebody a lesson. But being angry can't solve problems. A fight can't help, either. It may bring you more problems. In the school, everyone will be punished (惩罚), if he gets into a fight. There is no winner in a fight. 

Shout loudly. If you know someone is coming up behind you to attack, turn to the person with your hands up in front of your body and loudly say"stop" before walking away. Loud voice can usually make the attacker calm down. If the person doesn't stop, shout for help by calling your teachers. 

Learn to say no. Your friend may ask you to join in a fight, but helping him fight is not really helpful to him. If you really want to help him, try to ask him to stop. Also, you can tell him that if he has a fight, he may be punished. Then, try to know why he wants a fight and help him find a right way to solve the problem. 

If you follow my advice, you may keep away from a fight at school. 

 That year, I was a Junior 2 student. Falling off the stairs hurt me in the head. Almost every- one thought I 1 be dead. But they were wrong. 2 , it was difficult to get back to normal life. I had to leave school and learn everything— walking, talking, and yes, math. 

 To help me, Mrs. Pillar 3 to come to the hospital and later to my house once a week. We began with basic math skills. As time passed by, I made progress. 

I remember very clearly4 she came to my home on Sundays, sat with me at the kitchen table and threw different coins on the table. She asked me to show her 38 cents, 17 cents, 63 cents. It was 5 , but she also made it fun. 

 After a year and a half, I had progressed a lot, both in body and mind, 6 to school. Seven years later, I graduated(毕业) from the University of Texas at the top of my class. 

 As years went by, I7 kept in touch with(与……联系) Mrs. Pillar. Unluckily, one day I was8 that Mrs. Pillar had been in hospital because she suffered a stroke(中风). 

 Now it was my9 to help her. Mrs. Pillar lay in bed, unable to speak or know anybody around. I pulled some coins out of my pocket, dropped 10 on the bed, and asked her to show me 12 cents. The nurse thought that my action was very strange 11 one day Mrs. Pillar smiled happily as I began working with her— just as she had worked with me years before. She made progress every day and was moved out of ICU and12 out of hospital. 

One day, I called to wish her a happy New Year. She spoke 13 the phone excitedly, "Happy New Year to you and your family, Michael. Thank you for 14 you' ve done for me. "I quickly said, "Thank you for everything you' ve done for me, too. "

 Mrs. Pillar was one of my Junior 2 teachers, but she taught me so much more about life than only math:15 really makes wonders.
