Imagine （想象） walking into a movie theater without being greeted by the smell of popcorn. It's hard to believe, isn't it? For many people, popcorn goes hand in hand with movies. They can't have one without the other. But 1  did this happen?

The 2  between the two is younger than you may think. In the mid-1800s, popcorn was already a popular snack in America. Vendors sold it on the 3  . People, especially kids, loved this street food. In the early 1900s, vendors started to sell popcorn 4  movie theaters.

However, theater owners didn't like popcorn. They believed it would make the experience of watching a movie 5  enjoyable. Eating it would make too much noise during the silent movies.

Later, when movies added sound, the 6  noise problem went away. More and more people went to the movies. Some of them even secretly（秘密地） took popcorn into the theaters. Later, more movie theaters 7  . Some of them agreed people to eat popcorn while they were watching movies.

In the 1930s, the theater owners found that people didn't need to buy popcorn from street vendors. Because popcorn was 8  to make, they could make and sell it themselves. They did that and the smell of popcorn drew more people to their theaters. The 9  made a lot of money, and people enjoyed themselves at the movies.

Today, popcorn is still an important part of the movie-going experience. Roles, a man who once ate three bags of popcorn, said, "People come to theaters sometimes just for the 10 . They don't even care what is playing!"

The ISS is as tall as a nine﹣story building and weighs 186，900 kilograms. It's about the size of two football fields and flies about 400 kilometers above our heads at 28，970 kilometers per hour. It goes around Earth once every 90 minutes. 

If you watch the sky for about an hour after the sun goes down，you may see some "moving stars". But they are not really stars. They are man﹣made satellites. And the biggest of all is the International Space Station （ISS）. From May to July is the best season to watch the ISS flying over the earth. And people can see it with their eyes during the time. 

The scientists want to live on the ISS. They think that the best way to learn more about space is to live there. 

When the space station is finished，it will be like a city in space. People will stay and study there with many of the thing they have at home. Laboratories，living rooms and power stations are being built. The ISS is the most ambitious（雄心勃勃的）

Scientists hope that the ISS will be a stepping stone（跳板） for future space exploration. "The ISS will be more useful some day. The ISS will help us understand the human body better，explore space and study the earth. It can help us make life on the earth better. " said Kathryn Clark

Sixteen countries are part of the space program：the US，Russia，Canada，Brazil，and 11 European countries. 

China isn't an ISS country，but it has helped with some of the experiments. In 2003，China sent some rice up to the ISS to find out what space would do to it. 

After it's finished，more than 90 percent of the world's population is able to see the Space Station. So keep looking up，and maybe you'll see it getting bigger. 

People use languages to communicate. Any language has its ways to express people's minds. One of the ways in common is the use of idioms. An idiom is a group of words. It has a special meaning that is different from the usual meaning. For example, under the weather is an idiom meaning ill. So when people say "I'm under the weather", they are saying that they're not feeling well. Another example, in all weathers means in all kinds of weather. So, "There are homeless people sleeping on the streets in all weathers" tells us that homeless people sleep on the streets no matter whether it is cold or hot.

Different languages may have different ways to make idioms. For people who are learning a foreign language, idioms could cause misunderstandings and bring them endless problems. On the other hand if things are done right, idioms can also be a fun way of looking into a new culture and understanding how the people think and talk.

Metaphor（比喻）is often used in idioms. Let's read the following two examples:

▪Example 1: It makes my blood（血液）boil（煮沸）when my brother breaks my computer.

▪Example 2: The night was dark and quiet; my blood ran cold when I heard a strange noise outside on a dark night.

In neither situation above, can our blood reach the point so high or so low in temperature. However, with the situations the two sentences created, it is not difficult to understand the  ▲  feeling in the first example and very afraid in the second.

Of course, not all idioms are this easy to understand. When we come to idioms of a foreign language, a good dictionary of idioms is always suggested.

A beach trip can be fun and relaxing. To have an enjoyable beach trip, you need to make plans for it. Here is some useful information .

Decide which beach to visit. Have a discussion (讨论) with your family. Before you look for information online, sit down and talk with your family to learn about their ideas. Write down their ideas so that you won't forget them. For example, maybe your daughter wants to look for sea shells and your son wants to try some water sports.

____ One of the most important things to bring on a family beach trip is a cooler (冰桶) full of ice and things to eat and drink! Because you will spend a few hours on the beach, your family will need some food and drinks. It's better to bring lunch for everyone. Some good beach food and drinks are fresh fruit, sandwiches, juice and so on.

Plan activities for your trip. The best part of a beach trip is that your family can play together! Make sure that you bring things that your family want to use when they are on the beach, such as sand toys, frisbee (飞盘) and cards. If you want to stay by yourself, you can also bring some books to enjoy yourself.

Scientists have found that plants can make sounds. 

A scientist, Lily Hadany, and her team recorded(录制) tomato plants at different times. It showed that the plants made ultrasonic(超声波) sounds. People could only hear them with the help of a computer. They were noises like clicking(发出咔嗒声) sounds. 

As scientists studied the sounds, they began to find some interesting facts. Plants made different sounds at different time. They seldom clicked when they had enough water, but when they needed water, they clicked more and more. Scientists also found that plants made sounds when they got hurt. When scientists cut off a leaf from the plants, the plants also clicked more. But this kind of clicking wasn't the same as when the plants needed water. 

Some scientists designed a computer AI system to tell the different kinds of clicking sounds. It was able to find the difference between plants that needed water and plants with cuts. It means that one day we may be able to use these sounds to figure out when it is in difficult time, and what problem it is having. That could be very helpful to farmers. 

The team's finding changes our ideas about plants. As Dr Hadany says, "Even in a quiet field, there are sounds made by plants, and those sounds carry information and may help us a lot. "

 Friends are c{#blank#}1{#/blank#} to be the most important people in their lives by many teenagers because teenagers believe that their family members, especially their parents, don't u{#blank#}2{#/blank#} them as well as their friends do. In large families, it is common for brothers and sisters to fight with each other. L{#blank#}3{#/blank#} , they can go to their friends, getting advice and s{#blank#}4{#/blank#} their feelings with one another. It is also a good thing for teenagers to have one good friend or many friends. Even when they are not with their friends, they usually spend a lot of time talking among them on the phone. They feel r{#blank#}5{#/blank#} when talking with friends. This talking is also very important in children's growing up, because friends can discuss something that is difficult to say to their family members.
