Tom and Jerry

    Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse are two of the most popular cartoon characters in the world. In the short cartoons, Tom is always trying to catch Jerry, but he never has any success. Almost every cartoon ends with Tom in trouble and Jerry laughing at him. The stories are full of fun and have a long history.

    William Hanna and Joseph Barbera both worked for MGM in the late 1930s. Their boss told them to make funny cartoons. Together they thought of the idea of a cat and a mouse. They thought it would be funny if the mouse was clever and always got the cat into trouble.

    The first Tom and Jerry cartoon was shown in cinemas in 1940. It was a great success. Over the next 17 years, they made many Tom and Jerry cartoons. Most of them are around seven minutes long.

    In total, Hanna and Barbera made 114 Tom and Jerry cartoons. The cartoons were so good that they won a number of awards. The famous cat and mouse remain popular today, as the cartoons are still shown on television around the world.

A good king needs honest ministers (大臣) to help him manage the country. However, one king believed that his most important minister was a bit too honest!

The Valuer's job was to say what the price of everything in the country should be. He did his best to set fair prices, so that buyers and sellers would be happy. 

This did not please the king! "A good Valuer should set the prices that I want-then I can buy things cheaply and sell them expensively. " he said. "What's the point of having a Valuer if he doesn't set the prices I want?"

Soon, the king invited a foolish man to be the Valuer and fired (解雇) the honest Valuer. People brought all kinds of goods-rocks and fruit, fans and potatoes, fish and elephants. The foolish man had no idea how much anything was worth, so he just said whatever price came into his head. People were angry about many of the prices he set, but what could they do? He was the king's Valuer, after all!

One day, a horse trader came, leading five hundred fine horses. He bowed to the king and the Valuer, and said, "How much are my horses worth?" The king wanted the horses, so he told the Valuer to set a very low price. The Valuer thought for a moment and said, "Your horses are worth. . . a cup of rice!" The horse trader was speechless! But he had no choice but to accept the Valuer's price. 

However, the next day, the horse trader went back, carrying the cup of rice he had been given. "Yesterday, you said that my five hundred horses were worth a cup of rice, " the horse trader said to the Valuer. "____"

The foolish Valuer was surprised by this question. He said, "Your cup of rice is worth, er. . . this big city, and everything in it!" There was silence. . and then everybody started shouting at once. 

"That is silly!" shouted the king. "This city is worth far more than a cup of rice!"

Most of us like to know where we are and where we're going. It can feel strange to be 1 . The words "being lost" make us think of a dark and scary wood or street, 2  that's not always the case. 

Once we were on holiday in Venice. Dad planned to go out to take photos early the next morning. Mum wasn't 3 , but I would go with him. That's only because he 4  I could have the biggest bowl of Italian ice cream if I did. 5  else would I get up so early?

We left the hotel and started walking in the 6  streets the next day. When the sun came up, Dad started taking photos and I 7  him. 

After about an hour, I turned to Dad and asked, "Where are we?" He said, "I have no idea. "I immediately felt a bit 8 , but Dad just laughed and said, "We're lost!"I told him to 9  his map or phone. He said, "I only brought the 10 . Come on, let's enjoy being lost!" He laughed again. 

His laughter 11  me and made me feel safe. I began to 12  that we were lost, and just started watching and taking in everything that was happening around me. 13 , after about four hours of walking around, we were back. Mum asked anxiously(担心地), "Where have you been?"I said with a big 14 , "We got lost!"

These days we 15  get lost with so many things around us — maps, GPS, apps on our phones and so on. But Dad showed me that being lost can sometimes simply be something to enjoy. 

Sarah is 7 years old and she is new at school. After the first class bell rings，she walks out of the classroom. She sees some children talking and laughing in the school {#blank#}1{#/blank#} . 

Emily introduces（介绍） Sarah to the other children. There is a boy named Jack，{#blank#}2{#/blank#}girl named Lily and a boy named Tom. They have {#blank#}3{#/blank#} talking about themselves. Sarah knows much about her new friends. Emily loves to grow vegetables like {#blank#}4{#/blank#} . Tom likes to read books about {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. Sarah is happy to make new friends. 

 Arriving in Sydney on his own from India, my husband, Rashid, stayed in a hotel for a short time while looking for a house for me and our children.

 During the first week of his stay, he went out one day to do some shopping. He came back in the late afternoon to discover that his suitcase was gone. He was extremely worried as the suitcase had all his important papers, including his passport.

 He reported the case to the police and then sat there, lost and lonely in a strange city, thinking of the terrible troubles of getting all the paperwork organized again from a distant country while trying to settle down in a new one.

 Late in the evening, the phone rang. It was a stranger. He was trying to pronounce my husband's name and was asking him a lot of questions. Then he said they had found a pile of papers in their trash can(垃圾桶) that had been left out on the footpath.

 My husband rushed to their home to find a kind family holding all his papers and documents. Their young daughter had gone to the trash can and found a pile of unfamiliar papers. Her parents had carefully sorted them out, although they had found mainly foreign addresses on most of the documents. At last they had seen a half-written letter in the pile in which my husband had given his new telephone number to a friend.

 That family not only restored the important documents to us that day but also restored our faith and trust in people. We still remember their kindness and often send a warm wish their way.
