Near the hometown of the giant pandas sits the Leshan Giant Buddha, which is one of the most popular places for tourists at home and abroad.

The building of the giant Buddha started in 713. At that time, floods(洪水)often happened in Leshan area where Min River, Qingyi River and Dad u River ran together. Chinese monk (僧侣) Haitong decided to lead people to build a Buddha sculpture to deal with the waters that did harm to the boats traveling down the rivers. It was a super project in ancient times, which required lots of money.

Haitong went to many places to raise money, and after years, he finally raised enough money to start the project. When he got back to Leshan, the officials wanted to force Haitong to hand in the money. Haitong refused even though the officials sent soldiers (士兵) many times. He gouged (挖) his own eyes out to show his sincerity (真诚), scaring the soldiers away.

In the year 713, Haitong started the building of the Buddha, but he passed away when the giant Buddha was built to shoulders. Because of the death of Haitong, the building of the giant Buddha was forced to stop. Later, after many difficulties it was finally completed in 803.

The stone Buddha is the tallest Buddha sculpture in the world with a height of 71 meters. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Mount Emei in 1996.

To-wit-to-woo, to-wit-to-woo! What's that strange sound coming from the forest at night? It's an owl, of course! The owl is different from all other birds in so many ways. 

The owl's hearing and eyesight are better than most animal. All day long, the owl rests on the tree and sleep It hunts (捕猎) only at night. When evening comes, the animals all get to a safe place. The owl opens its big, round eyes to look around. Any little animals around had better be careful, The owl eats small animals like mice as food, but it wouldn't say no to another bird, if it's really hungry. 

The owl uses its great hearing to find its food, and then it turns its head from side to side. using its sharp (敏锐的) eyes to fly after the animal. Finally, it flies down to get the animal. Owls have special, soft feathers (羽毛), so they can fly without making any sound. Owls are good hunters and they can even catch a fly in the air!

The owl is usually quiet, except (除余了) when you get too close to its home. The mother owl is a great mother. She will protect her babies by opening her feathers angrily. She will even hurt people if she thinks her babies are in danger!

The owl has no teeth, so it eats an animal whole. All the parts of the animal that the owl can't digest (消化) will end up as small pieces. If you find these small pieces, you know you are near an owl's home.

I live in a small town. Our town sits on a large {#blank#}1{#/blank#}（山）overlooking the ocean. It's a p{#blank#}2{#/blank#}good place to live, with fresh air and beautiful views. The p{#blank#}3{#/blank#} isn't too big, so it's quiet and peaceful. We have a small school, a few {#blank#}4{#/blank#}（市场），and a park where everyone gathers on sunny days.

Living in my town does have its challenges, though. Walking or r{#blank#}5{#/blank#} bikes can be tiring when you're heading uphill. Sometimes, it gets windy, and the wind can be much {#blank#}6{#/blank#}（强烈的）than down below.

There are some things we miss out on, l{#blank#}7{#/blank#}having a big shopping mall or a movie theatre nearby. But we have a strong community spirit, and everyone knows each other. We help each other out, and there's always someone to lend a hand, {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(尤其) when people get into trouble.

Overall, I think our living environment is nice. It's not {#blank#}9{#/blank#}（完美的），but it's home, and it's definitely better than living in a crowded（拥挤的）, n{#blank#}10{#/blank#} city. We have fresh air, beautiful views, and a close-knit community. What more could you ask for?

Gift giving is an important practice that can show a number of different meanings. Here are some gift giving traditions from a few different countries. 

◆ In Zimbabwe

In Zimbabwe, it is common to ask for a gift straightly. When a gift has been bought even without asking for it, the worst thing you can do is to refuse(拒绝) the offering, even if the giving family is poor.

◆ In Japan

The Japanese show a great importance of the act of gift giving. For example, people don't like uncovered (裸露的) money. So whether you're sending money as a gift or just leaving a tip (小费), put your money in an envelope (信封). 

◆ In India

As people think left hands are unclean in Indian culture, acts such as touching, passing money, or giving gifts must be done with your right hand.

◆ In Russia

Vodka (伏特加酒) might seem a perfect gift for a Russian, but in fact, a lot of them would see it as an unimaginative (缺乏想象力的) gift. Many even think the idea is terrible. 

◆ In Ireland

Don't be astonished if your gift is refused a couple of times in Ireland. This tradition comes from a time when they didn't have enough potatoes to eat in the 1840s, and because of this, the receivers are making sure that you can really part from the thing that you are offering.
