    A friend of mine whose name was John Smith had a bad memory, which made him famous. He was so forgetful that he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly remind him about his meetings, his classes - even his meals! Once he forgot he had eaten breakfast twice, at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbors, "If John didn't have his head tied on, he would forget that too!" Since Smith was a professor at a well-known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment to him. It wasn't that he was not clever, as some critical people tended to say, but just very very absent-minded.

    One hot summer day, Professor Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a three-hour train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children, he kept the name of the town a secret. However, by the time they arrived at the station, Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit. Luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going.

    The professor's wife was surprised to see him again so soon.

    "Oh, my dear, I forget the name of the town."

    "What? You forget the name? Maybe one day you will forget my name! Now I'll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don't forget where you put it."

    Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again. Ten minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time.

Lily loved school. However, there was one class Lily worried about more than any other—art. She didn't know why she just wasn't any good at drawing, painting, or cutting.

Ms. Clay, the art teacher, stood at the front of the room. "Class, next Friday our school is going to have an art competition," she announced. Ms. Clay was a great teacher, and Lily liked her a lot. But this announcement made Lily nervous. "Everyone in the school will create a piece of artwork to show in the library. You can use the different types of artwork we have been studying." Ms. Clay was quite excited when she spoke while Lily found herself sinking lower in her chair.

Lily had the whole weekend to work on her project, but she could not think of anything to do. On Monday, Lily felt frightened, so after school Lily asked Ms. Clay if she could write an art paper instead of doing an art project.

"I understand this project scared you, Lily," Ms. Clay said. "Just remember, you can create any kind of art you want." Ms. Clay smiled at her. "Art is a person's way of expressing his or her feelings—it isn't always painting, drawing, or cutting. I know you will think of something very creative, and I can't wait to see it."

When Lily arrived home, she took out a piece of paper and a pencil. She remembered Ms. Clay's words. "Art is a person's way of expressing his or her feelings." Lily wrote the word "terrified" on her paper. She crumpled (揉皱) the paper and threw it to the side of her desk.

Then Lily stared at the crumpled ball. Suddenly an idea struck her.

As Valentine's Day, a time for expressing affection through the exchange of presents, drew near, Kendra found herself seated at the kitchen table, carefully penning her name on Valentine's cards for her classmates. She recognized her own hesitation; words didn't come easily to her. While she envied the ease with which her peers talked and laughed, her shyness often kept her quiet.

Kendra grabbed another card. Her eyes lit up at the phrase "You're dynamite （引起轰动的人或物）!" — a term that would undoubtedly delight her Grammy, who frequently used the expression to praise their festive decorations. "Well, that looks dynamite!" Grammy would exclaim, her approval filling Kendra with warmth.

Just as Kendra was signing the cards, her mother came in, sharing the sad news of Elise, their neighbor, and her recent accident that led to a broken leg, restricting her to home schooling for the coming weeks. Kendra felt sorry for Elise, and quickly picked the most splendid valentine, hurrying to Elise's home.

Upon arrival, Kendra's look fell upon the life-sized deer statue decorating the front yard. She studied it, saying to herself, "Wouldn't this deer look cool with a big heart around his neck? Elise could look out of the window and see it decorated for Valentine's day."

With this idea, Kendra got the sizable red heart her Grammy had given her, tied it with string, and hung it around the statue's neck like a festive chain. The next day, she decorated the antlers （鹿角） with a variety of smaller hearts. It was during this act of kindness that Colin and Amy, Elise's fellow classmates, happened upon the scene. "Are you decorating Elise's deer for Valentine's Day?" they asked. Kendra confirmed with a nod, explaining her intention to cheer up Elise. Despite her uncertainty about what to add next, Colin proposed adding some color, while Amy suggested putting decorations on the deer's back and forehead. United by a shared purpose, they agreed to meet later.

Charlie and I have known each other since kindergarten but have never been close. Ever since we were partners for the science project last year, there is very little we choose to say to each other. Needless to say, the science project fell short of our expectations. In light of that event, I was shocked that Mr. Egan and Ms. Cates found us a suitable match. 

At the meeting with Mr. Egan, we divided the responsibilities between us. I would be in charge of setting up the room and getting the volunteers to work the sale for all three days. Charlie would be in charge of all the books. We were both quite satisfied with our jobs, and even more satisfied that there would be little contact between us. 

With only two weeks to plan, I knew I could not waste time. I asked John and Rachel to help me with the set-up and twelve other classmates to work at the fair. I figured that, between Mr. Egan, the friends who volunteered to help, and me, we would be just fine. 

Meanwhile, I tried on two separate occasions to start a conversation with Charlie about the progress he was making, but each time his response was, "Everything's cool." 

On the day of the set-up, my friends and I arrived, only to find Charlie with his head in his hands, surrounded by a million boxes of books. I asked him, "Charlie, what's wrong?"
