Have you ever heard of Dong Hongjuan，the first Chinese woman to successfully climb all 14 mountains above 8，000 meters on Earth？

Dong，42，successfully climbed to the top of the 8，027-meter Mount Shishapangma，the only eight-thousander located fully within China，on April 26，2023. She has made history by becoming the first woman to climb all 14 mountains above 8，000 meters on Earth. Dong's achievement（成绩）was proved by the International Mountaineerng Summit（高峰） website 8000 ers. com on April 30. "It was a historical day for the mountaineers（登山者） and mountain lovers. Now Dong is the first woman to have reached all true summits of the 148，000 ers，"said the website on its front page. 

Dong started climbing because of interest. When she found out about the list of eight-thousander climbers，she hoped there would be a Chinese name on it. She climbed Mount Qomolangma in 2013 and completed the other 13 mountains such as Qogir，Nanga Parbat in the following years. 

During the celebration meal in Lhasa，Dong showed her excitement about the successful summit. "Dong's perseverance（毅力） best describes the mountaineering spirit（精神） and shows the power of Chinese women，"said Tsering Samdrup，Chairman of Tibet Mout. taineering Association.

A zero－waste life is a lifestyle that hardly creates any rubbish. "Zero waste" was first suggested by a French woman called Bea Johnson. Her idea is：live a life and try not to create any rubbish；use different kinds of ways to save the environment，such as stopping the use of one－off objects；giving unwanted things to others or donating these things to organizations like the Red Cross. 

A zero－waste life follows the 6R rule—Refuse，Reduce，Reuse，Repair，Recycle and Rot. Chen Yuan，27，is deeply interested in this idea. She and her boyfriend Joe have lived in Beijing for many years. Over August—October when Chen followed the rule of zero waste 6R，she and her boyfriend both produced only two cans of rubbish. Now the couple have opened a small shop in Beijing，where they use wood products to take the place of plastic ones and cloth bags printed with environmentally logos. The store also has second－hand books and CDs to make the best of the used things. 

 "The zero－waste lifestyle is not for ascetics（苦行僧）. It is just around us. " Chen expects some of her friends to join her on the road to zero waste. 

When my first wartime Christmas came, I was in a new soldier school in Ashland and not sure if I could make it home for the holidays. On the afternoon of December 23, we were told some of us would have three-day holidays posted. I was one of the lucky soldiers.

It was Christmas Eve when I arrived home, and a light snow had fallen. Mother opened the front door. I could see over her, into the corner of the living room where the tree had always stood. There were lights all colors shining in the green of the tree.

"Where did it come from?" I asked.

I asked the gate boy to cut it" my mother said. "I wouldn't have had one just for myself, but you called in such a rush! He just brought it in this afternoon."
