When 1949 meets 2023

Hi, I'm Hanhan, a student from Beijing. I was born in 2008. In the past 15 years, everyone's life changed a lot. My grandfather Jianguo feels (感觉) the same. He was born in1949. "When I was your age, life was very different," he said to me. But how was it different? I'm going to talk to him.

Jianguo: When I was born, many families were poor (贫穷的). Most people could spend only about 50 yuan a year.

Hanhan: In 2023, most people spent about 30,000 yuan a year. It increased a lot. I have some pocket money (零花钱). I use it to buy my favourite toys.

Jianguo: In 1949, about 75% of Chinese people could not read or write. Going to school was a dream (梦想) for many people.

Hanhan: Now almost everyone can go to primary and junior high schools. In some poor places, students can enjoy free meals after class. We have good chances to make our dreams come true.

Jianguo: I used to (过去) live in a hutong with my family. My brother and I shared a small room.

Hanhan: My family lives in a tall building. I have my own bedroom, but life in the hutong sounds (听起来) so interesting.

Hi, I'm Jane Miller. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} first name is Jane . My phone {#blank#}2{#/blank#}is 853-924. My favorite color is yellow and I have two yellow {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. There are four people in my family — my dad, my mom, my brother and me. I'm  {#blank#}4{#/blank#}Shanghai with my mom and my brother. My dad  {#blank#}5{#/blank#}in Toronto, Canada. I'm a student at Lake School. My mom is my English teacher at this  {#blank#}6{#/blank#}. All my classmates are {#blank#}7{#/blank#}to me. I love playing with them at school.

Zhang Ming is my classmate. He is my good friend,  {#blank#}8{#/blank#}. He likes black {#blank#}9{#/blank#}he has many black pens. I'm happy to {#blank#}10{#/blank#}him in the morning.

Billie Jean was full of energy! When the bell rang, she would rush outside and join any game. One teacher suggested she should be more "ladylike" and try not to win all the time, but her parents didn't agree.

"Play as well as you can and be the best you can be!" they told her.

One morning, Billie's friend Susan invited her to play tennis. Billie didn't know what "tennis" was, but it sounded exciting! The next weekend, Susan took Billie to the Virginia Club. There were ladies wearing expensive tennis dresses. She felt quite out of place in her T-shirt and shorts! But she felt much better when she got out onto the tennis court. Billie spent more time hitting the air than she did hitting the ball. The ladies around tutted(发出嘘声), but she didn't care.

The next morning, her mom took her to the public court at Houghton Park to meet Clyde.

"I'm Clyde, your coach!" he said, "Come on in!"

Clyde taught her patiently. The more she learned, the more fun she had.

"I want to be the best tennis player in the world!" She asked her coach, "Clyde, can you make me a champion(冠军)?"

He just smiled, "No, Billie. ____."

Billie took his words to heart, so she kept practicing day and night.

One day, she was invited to the Los Angeles Club. All the players lined up to have their photos taken, but then a man came up.

"You can't be in the photo!" he said, "You're not wearing a skirt or dress!"

Billie was angry Her mum had made her shorts especially for her.

"Don't worry, Mom!" she told her mother. "I'll show them one day! Everybody will know who I am, and they'll all want to copy my style!"

And Billie did! She never gave up or let others tell her how she should behave. And she became one of the greatest and most famous sports stars ever!

A group of students visited their teacher after leaving school for many years. All of them talked about {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(problem) in their work and lives. It seemed that they were not satisfied with themselves. 

Then {#blank#}2{#/blank#} teacher went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and many kinds of cups — china, plastic and glass. He told them {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(help) themselves to the coffee. 

When all the students had a cup of coffee in their hands, the teacher said {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(slow), "Have you noticed that all the nice-looking and expensive cups have been taken and the common ones have been left behind? Maybe it is not wrong to choose the best things {#blank#}5{#/blank#} yourselves. However, it is the source(根源) of all your trouble. Does the cup itself add anything to the coffee? Of course not. It is just a tool to hold {#blank#}6{#/blank#} you drink. "

"It was coffee that you really wanted, not the cups, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} you all went for the best cups and then began to watch others' cups. Life is the coffee while jobs, money and the social positions are the cups. Coffee is {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(important) than cups. The cups don't decide what your life is. " All the students understood {#blank#}9{#/blank#} the teacher said. 

Sometimes if we pay attention to the cups, we will not enjoy the coffee. The people {#blank#}10{#/blank#} are the happiest in the world may not have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything.
