Something unexpected happenedin the summer of my eleventh year. The home I had grown up in burned to the groundin the middle of the night. Thankfully, my mom, dad, grandma, brothers and I escapedalong with my dogs. Yet, we had nothing but the night clothes we were sleeping in.I spent the rest of that night with a friend of my family. I tried unsuccessfullyto sleep in the bed in his house. I was too scared.

    The next day my mom brought me a few T-shirtsand pairs of jeans that another friend gave to her. One pair of them was too shortand the other pair was too long, but I didn't care. At least I had some clothesagain. My dad returned to our broken home to see what he could find. The only thinghe could save was my mom's rings.

    To spend the summery dad rented us a big houseon the same road as our old house had been. As we moved in, our friends and ourcommunity continued todonate (捐赠) all they could to help us to get back on our feet. There were moreclothes, furniture, food money, and even some books for me to read. Love was aroundus.

    Looking back now I am thankful for all we wentthrough that summer because it taught me so much about life, love and people. Itshowed me that when you have nothing left but love, for the first time you see thatlove is enough.

Dick is a middle school student. He hasn't got a good life style. He always goes to school w{#blank#}1{#/blank#} breakfast or if he is hungry, he usually has some fast food. His mum asks him to eat h{#blank#}2{#/blank#} food, but he never listens to her. For his twelfth birthday, his father bought him a computer as a present. When he told the doctor that he liked fast food and spent much time on computer games, the doctor knew his P{#blank#}9{#/blank#} and gave him some a{#blank#}10{#/blank#}: Stop eating fast food and spend more time outside.

A Kind Grandmother

Mrs. Wallace had two grandchildren. They lived near her house. They visited her house every day after school.

She was very good at making things. One day she made some beautiful

dolls and gave them to her grandchildren to play with.

The grandchildren wanted some pet rabbits, and Mrs. Wallace said she

could make a hutch to keep them in. The children went to ask their parents.

"Can we please have some pet rabbits?" they asked.

"Where will you keep them?" their father asked. "You need a hutch for them."

"Grandma will make a hutch for them," the children said.

The father and mother talked about it. They told the children they could have two rabbits. But they must put them in the hutch.

Mrs. Wallace went to a shop and bought wood, paint and nails (钉子). She worked all daywhen the children were at school. After school they came to watch and help.

The next day Mrs. Wallace finished (完成) the hutch and painted it. Then she thought about how to get it to the children. It was too big to put into her car.

"I know," she thought. "I'll put it on the wheelbarrow(手推车) and wheel it there. It's not far."

On the way to the children's house, aman saw her and said. "That's very nice. Did you make it yourself?"

"Yes," she said happily." I made it for my grandchildren." "Really?" he said. "I thought it was for rabbits!

Yesterday my parents were going to a coastal city for holiday so I drove them to the train station. On the way back home，the 1 was falling down from the dark﹣clouded sky. 

Suddenly，I saw an elderly man of a similar age to my father 2 toward the bus station. He walked with difficulty and he had no umbrella. I drove my car to his side and asked him 3 he was going. After knowing that he was going to the same town as I was，I offered him a 4 . He happily accepted and went into my car.

As a student， I was most afraid to answer questions in class， and I found that the students around were just like me. At the beginning of each class， when the teacher asked a question， I always lowered my head because I was afraid that the teacher saw me. 

One day， in a foreign language class， Mr. Black gave us a lesson. He wanted us to be active in class， so he asked us some questions， but no one answered. "Let me tell you a story first，" he said. 

"When I came to the United States to study， the university often invited famous people to make speeches. Before the beginning of every speech， I found an interesting thing. The students around me always took cardboard folded （折叠的） in half， wrote their names in bold （黑体） with the most eye-catching color， and then placed the cardboard on the seat. So when the speaker needed the answers from the students， he could see and call a listener's name directly. I couldn't understand that. My classmate told me the speakers were all top people， who meant chances. When your answer was to his surprise， it meant he might give you more chances. In fact， I really saw a few students got great chances because of that. "

After listening to the story， I understood that the chance will not find you itself. You must show yourself all the time so that you can find a chance on the card.
