Last summer I got the chance to spend a month helping out in a hospital in Africa. I had one year left at school, and I was  {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(interest) in studying medicine at university.

Working there introduced me to a world that is very different from  {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(I) in so many ways. I was shocked(震惊的) that many families over there had such  {#blank#}3{#/blank#}poor and difficult life. But I was also surprised at how positively people spend their daily  {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (life). They come together and help each other, and that's something a lot of us here in the UK have forgotten. My work in the hospital  {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(be) hard. Not only did I spend a lot of time cleaning floors, but also I got to spend some time looking after the patients (病人)  {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(careful). And I liked  {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(talk) to some doctors and asking them about the job. I saw some truly awful(极坏的) things in the hospital,  {#blank#}8{#/blank#}none of them changed my mind about being a doctor. {#blank#}9{#/blank#}fact, they only made me more determined to learn medicine.

 {#blank#}10{#/blank#}I finished the work, I knew what I'm going to do in the future: I want to work for an international organisation like the Red Cross. I can't wait to get started.

One afternoon, I went to pick up my mother from work. I got there a little early, so I stopped my car by a small park and waited for her in the car. 

As I looked outside the car window, I saw a little boy, around two years old, running freely on the grass as his mother watched him from a short distance. The boy had a big smile on his face as if he had just been set free after being indoors for too long. He would then fall to the grass, get up, without even looking back at his mother, run as fast as he could, again, still with a smile on his face, as if nothing had happened. 

At that moment, I thought to myself "Why aren't adults this way? "Most adults, when they fall down, make a deal of it and don't even make a second attempt (尝试). They would be so embarrassed that they would not ty again if someone saw them fall. Or, because they fall, they would find a good excuse for themselves that they are not fit for it. They would end up too afraid to attempt again for fear of failure. 

However, with kids, when they fall down, they don't consider their falling as a failure. Instead, they treat it as a learning experience. They try again and again until they succeed. The answer must be that they have not connected "falling down" with the word "failure". As a result, they are not discouraged in any way. Besides, they probably think to themselves that it is quite okay to fall down and it is not wrong to do so. In other words, they allow themselves to make mistakes, so they remain energeti C. 

I was deeply impressed by the boy's persistence and the manner in which he did. 

Paul Lacy and his wife Dorothy Lacy are Americans. They are in their seventies. They have an embroidery workshop (刺绣工厂)in Hunan.

The first time Dorothy went to Fenghuang was on a trip in 1999, and she fell in love with the old town and the Miao culture. In the following year, Paul and Dorothy decided to do something. With the help of a Chinese friend, the Lacys had their embroidery workshop in Fenghuang four years later.

After Paul and Dorothy sold their things in America in 2006, the Lacys started to live in Fenghuang. At first, the Lacys had a hard time because of the language. When they went shopping, they had to show the sellers pictures of what they wanted. As time went by, they made friends with the Miao people living there.

Before they lived in Fenghuang, the two went to many places of China. For example, they traveled to cities, such as Beijing, Xi'an and Guiyang. "Among all those places, we like Fenghuang best because of its beautiful and quiet environment and the rich culture of the Miao people. What's more, Dorothy thinks that the clothes of the Miao people are really beautiful. But it is the kindness of the people here that attracts (吸引）us the most. So we decided to live here," Paul said.

It's a sunny day today. A hungry fox(狐狸) is walking on the grass and looking for food. Soon, he sees a fat chicken playing near a farm. He says to himself," Wow, great! This is my breakfast. It must be really delicious!" He comes up to the chicken and says," Good morning, Miss Chicken. I know you can sing very well. All my friends like your songs very much. Can you sing one for me?" The chicken is happy to hear that. She closes her eyes and begins to sing a song. At the moment, the fox sees that and takes her away quickly.

 On the farm, there are some farmers working. They see the fox and shout," Look! The fox is taking the chicken away." Hearing this, the chicken says to the fox," Mr. Fox, can you hear that? The people say you are taking their chicken away. Tell them I am your chicken, not their chicken." The fox opens his mouth and says," Yes, you are right." Then he shouts," This is my chicken, not your chicken." Just then the chicken runs away from the fox and flies into the tree.

Ashley was honest, fashionable, and the"Queen Bee" in my school. 

I looked up to her and idolised(崇拜) her. I listened to the music she listened to, and wore the clothes she wore. I even took art class though I had really wanted to take theatre. I finally fitted in 1 group. 

 One day, I got out of my last class a few minutes early to 2 seats for our group at the dining hall. Paying all attention to my homework, I didn't notice they had sat down behind me. Before I could say a word, I3 realised what they were    3   . 

I listened silently. "She's such a loser, " one girl said. 

 Another girl added, "Ashley, she 4 follows you, trying to copy you. "

"I wish she would leave us alone. We were in the same summer school and now she thinks we're best friends. " The once familiar voice sounded so5 and strange. 

I was mortified (感到羞辱的). My hands were shaking. I couldn't help crying 6 . I felt heartbroken for the very first time. How did this happen? I 7 we were friends. 

I ran home. My mother just held me while I cried for hours. The advice she gave me was so 8 , and I had heard it a million times, "Just be yourself and people will like you for 9 you are. " This time I could understand it better. Then and there I 10 to find myself back. That was exactly what I did. 

 Over the next month, I went through a lot of 11 . I bought new clothes that I wanted to wear. I no longer went to art class 12 them, and took theatre. I began making new friends. I developed my own 13 and never again followed the crowd. 

I had an amazing school year. 14 I look back, I think it was the year when I discovered the person I was going to be. It was a 15 they had given me, though I was deeply pained that day.
