The Ling family did not think they were going home with a pet that day. Annie wanted to visit the animal shelter(避难所). She wanted to see the cats and dogs. She had wanted a pet for years. Her parents were waiting for the girls to be old enough. Annie was seven. Her sister Lily was only three. Lily was still learning how to act around animals. She had a lot of energy!

Annie and Lily were excited to see the animals. A shelter volunteer gave the Ling family a tour. The volunteer talked about why animals came to the shelter. Some were found by the road. Others were dropped off by families who could not care for them.

Finally, the Ling family got to see the animals: There was a cat section and a dog section. They were all so cute! Some of the animals looked scared. This made Annie sad. The volunteer explained that animals need time to get used to a new place. She assured(向......保证) Annie that all the people caring for these animals were kind.

The Ling family walked through the dog section. They started talking. A dog just felt like the right choice. Annie's mom could not take her eyes of fan older black dog with kind eyes. Annie's dad was interested in a large, energetic dog. Annie had found her own favorite. He was a young puppy. He was brown with spots. He had been found near the railway with six other puppies(小狗). Annie could not take her eyes off this dog. She thought he had the cutest face in the world.

Annie pleaded(恳求) with her parents. They did not want to make a quick decision. But they could see in Annie's eyes that she had found her companion(伴侣). The volunteer talked about what a good breed the dog was and that he would be kind with children. That was what the family needed to hear. They decided to take the little puppy home.

China has a long history of using incense(熏香). Ancient Chinese people loved incense and knew how to make it. Different kinds of Chinese herbal(草药的) medicines were chosen by ancient Chinese to make incense, because incense could clean the air and keep people's minds clear. Different smells of incense can work differently.

As early as the Pre-Qin period, most of people liked to burn incense to wish for a better life. Later, it was found that incense could be used to keep away from animals. Gradually, the ancient people began to use incense to freshen air.

In ancient times, incense would also be used to tell time. For example, people would light a stick of incense to calculate(计算) the time of an exam. When it burned out, the exam was over. This is what Chinese people call"the duration(持续时间) of a stick of incense." What's more, incense in the shape of balls would be put in a special bag. When it was heated, the clothes covering the special bag smelled good. Incense can also be used to improve people's health. When you feel stressed or nervous, the pleasant smell can make you relaxed. And lots of Chinese believe that beautiful things that smell good can help people to have a good rest.

Chinese are born to prefer incense. Learning the ancient ways of making incense is a good way not only to show our respect for Chinese classical culture but also to pass it on.

Jingwai Mingde Primary School is in Xuanwei, Yunnan. It was made up of five country primary schools in 2008. It has mor than 1, 000 teachers and students now. The country primary school is famous for its special labour lessons. It has a 150-mu farm. The students can help their school get food self-sufficiency(自给自足) by working on the farm. ↵

Each class(from Grade Three to Grade Six) can get a piece of land on the farm. The students can take two labour lessons on the farm with the help of their labour teachers. They love their land very much and spend most of their free time on it. They plant all kinds of vegetables, such as beans, potatoes, tomatoes and carrots. Some even plant apple trees, orange trees and other fruit trees. Their school looks much nicer with green trees and beautiful flowers all year round. 

There is also a zoo in the school. The students can keep chickens, ducks and other farm animals in it. They have learnt a lot by keeping the farm animals. 

"The children have learnt how to do farm work by working on the farm, " said a teacher. "It also helps them learn how to get on well with others and make their school life more colourful. "

Every year on May 1st, there is a school trip in Jim and Helen's School. Children like it very much, and they always have fun. Here is the notice for this year's trip. 

If you've ever seen elephant seals(象海豹) lying on a beach, you might think all they do is sleep. But now scientists have discovered that when elephant seals are in the ocean, they hardly sleep at all. They just sleep for about two hours a day. 

Even though elephant seals are large animals, they have to be careful in the ocean. Near the surface(水面), predators like sharks and orca s are a danger. So elephant seals spend most of their time diving(潜水) deep underwater, looking for food. Usually, they will dive for about 30 minutes, then come up for air for just a couple of minutes before diving again. 

Scientists have wondered how elephant seals can sleep while they're at sea, since they are almost diving all the time. Animals like dolphins and sea lions have a special way. One half of their brain can sleep, while the other stays awake. But elephant seals are like humans- both halves of the brain need to go to sleep at the same time. So how do they sleep? 

To find out, a scientist named Jessica Kendall- Bar did a research. She created a special cap that could record the elephant seals' brain activity. The cap also collected information on the elephant seals' heart rates, how their bodies were moving, and how deep they were. Dr. Kendall- 

Bar and her team put the caps on thirteen young female elephant seals. 

The scientists learned that elephant seals steep in short times while they are diving. They only sleep for about 10 minutes at a time. They wake up in time to go up for more air. The scientists found that elephant seals only sleep for about two hours a day when they're in the ocean. That means that the rest they get once they return to land is very important, which helps them have energy again. Back on land they sleep for about 10.8 hours a day 

The researchers hope that their work will help to protect the places where elephant seals sleep when they're on land.
