Beijing Opera is one of the Chinese traditional drama art forms and the largest Chinese opera form. Having a history of about 200 years, it is developed from many other drama forms, mostly from the local drama" Huiban". It was especially popular in south China during the 18th century.

Theatrical(戏剧的) art forms in many other countries do not have singing, dancing and spoken parts together in one single drama. An opera singer, for example, neither dances nor speaks on stage; there are no singing or dancing parts in a modern play; in a dance drama, the dancer doesn't speak or sing. Traditional Chinese drama, including Beijing Opera, is a kind of entertainment(娱乐). It includes spoken parts, singing and dancing.

Beijing Opera has spread to many other places. Mei Lanfang, one of the most famous performers of all, was the first to introduce Beijing Opera to foreigners and made highly successful tours to foreign countries." You will doubt and sometimes be a little bored, but you will be interested gradually. You will be strongly attracted to Beijing Opera, even if you know nothing about the drama background." This is how one traveler described his first experience in watching Beijing Opera.

①When I was in fourth grade, we would have reading circles. The other kids and I would sit in a circle and read aloud different parts of books. Then the teacher would ask us questions. I loved to answer those questions. I was an advanced(先进的) reader and a very fast reader. That meant that whenever the teacher would start asking us questions, my voice would be the first to call out the answers.

②This went on for a while, and everybody was pretty patient with me. Little did I realize, though, that the teacher was getting tired of my behavior(行为). Because I was not able to sit there and go with the other students, one dáy she put me in the corner, out of the circle.

③Did thisstop me? I am afraid not. I was simply excited about what I had read. From the corner of the room, I kept on-listening and reading ____ reading away. When the teacher would ask questions,I would still shout but the answers—— but from across the room.

④After I'd done this a few times, the teacher became angry. She decided to schedule a meeting with my parents.

⑤The next day, my mother came to school for the meeting She reminded the teacher that I was just trying to be a good student and that I needed to be challenged more. However, it was also made clear to me that there were other students in the class and they need a chance to talk, too.

⑥In the end, we worked out a solution. I would sit in the circle with the other students, but I would be given more advanced books to read. After the reading circle was over, the teacher would spend time talking with me about what I had read.

⑦And so, although I am embarrassed, I learned a lesson from it.

 Among all the pen productions, the writing brush(maobi) is a kind of special writing tool mainly made in China.

 Archaeologists(考古学家) said that writing brushes first appeared about 5,000 years ago. Hengshui, Xuancheng and Huzhou were three centers for making writing brushes in Chinese history. Many people still celebrate the invention of the brush every year.

____ Materials(材料) for the head part include rabbit hair, horse hair and so on. Some Chinese people like to make the writing brush with babies' lanugos(胎毛). People believe that a writing brush made of the hair of newborn babies will bring good luck while taking exams. As for stalks(笔杆), common materials are usually wood, but we can also see some special ones made of ivory, gold and some other expensive materials.

 It's considered that the writing brush is the most important one among the Four Treasures of Chinese Study. In Chinese calligraphy(书法) and Chinese painting, the writing brush is widely used. In ancient China, children had to learn calligraphy and try to write a good hand. Even the emperors were good at calligraphy. Nowadays, some Chinese people still practice calligraphy with a writing brush from a very young age. Calligraphy is beneficial to people in some ways. When writing, people will forget all worries and even themselves, turning all thoughts into the beauty of art. People think it helps improve a person's temper(脾气).

 Writing or painting with writing brushes is not only a way of communication, but also a way of expressing a person's inner world.
