Green Energy for Today and Tomorrow

Did you know that most of the energy we use comes from the sun? For example, the sun helps plants to grow. Plants that grew millions of years ago turned into coal, oil, and natural gas（天然气）. We call these fossil fuels（化石燃料）.

However, fossil fuels cause pollution. This is bad for the Earth. Fossil fuels are also nonrenewable. Some day they will be gone. So, scientists want people to use green energy.

Why is green energy important? First, it is clean. It doesn't hurt the Earth. Next, it is renewable. It won't run out. Green energy gives us almost 25% of the electricity we use today.

What are the main sources（来源） of green energy?

Water Power

Water power uses moving water in rivers and dams（堤坝）. Moving water has energy. Water power makes 

16.6% of the electricity we use.

Wind Power

Is wind power new? No, it isn't. People used wind power many years ago. Wind power makes 4% of the electricity we use.

Solar Power

Solar power comes from sunlight. The sun shines on solar panels（太阳能电池板）, and electricity is made. Solar power is now as cheap as some fossil fuels. It makes 

1.5% of the electricity we use.

Biomass energy（生物质能）

Biomass energy is energy that we get from plants around us. For example, dead wood or grass is burned in power stations. This makes electricity. Biomass energy is green energy because we plant new trees or crops（庄稼） after we use it. Biomass energy makes 2% of the electricity we use.

New Green Energy

The ocean rises and falls each day. This moving water can make electricity. We call it tide power. There is also heat under the Earth's surface. Scientists can use this heat for energy, which is called heat power. We may find other sources of green energy in the future.

Some day, green energy could make 100% of the electricity we use. That's good news for the Earth!

Tom and Mike were good friends, they began to work in a company together at the same year. They both worked hard. After several years, however, the boss made Mike manager(经理) but Tom was still an office worker. Tom couldn't stand it, so he handed a letter to his boss, saying that he decided to resign(辞职) his job because the boss didn't value his hard work at all.

The boss knew that Tom worked very hard for years. He thought for a moment and said,"I hope you will do one more thing for our company before you leave. Perhaps you will change your mind." Tom agreed. The boss asked him to go and find out if there was anyone who sold watermelons in the market. Tom returned soon. He said he had found a man selling watermelons. The boss asked the price of the watermelons. Tom shook his head and went back to the market again. When he returned, he told the boss it was $2 for each kilo.

The boss told Tom to wait for a moment in his office, and he called Mike in. He asked Mike to find if there was anyone selling watermelons in the market. Later Mike returned and said," Only one man is selling watermelons, $2 for each kilo. He has 100 watermelons in all. Every watermelon weighs about 2 kilos. They were brought here two days ago, pretty fresh and sweet." Tom got to know the difference between Mike and himself. He decided not to resign his job any more.

Jo was the first to wake. She remembered her mother's promise, and, putting her hand under her pillow(枕头), drew out a little red-covered book. She loved it. She woke Meg up and asked her to see what was under her pillow. A green-covered book appeared. Then Beth and Amy woke, to find their little books also. 

"Girls, " said Meg seriously, "Mother wants us to read and love these books, and we must begin at once. I shall read a little every morning, for I know it will do me good. "

And then they opened the new books and read. The rooms were very quiet, and the winter sunshine shone in to touch the serious faces with a Christmas greeting. 

"Where is Mother?" asked Meg, as she ran down to thank her for their gifts, half an hour later. 

"Some poor men come for help, and Mrs. March went straight off to see what was needed, " replied Hannah, who was considered more as a friend than a servant. 

"She will be back soon, so we must get everything ready, " said Meg, looking over the presents which were collected in a basket, ready to be given to their mother at the proper time. "Why, where is Amy's bottle of cologne(古龙香水)?" she wondered. 

"She took it out a minute ago, " replied Jo. 

"There's Mother. Hide the basket, quick!" cried Jo, as door opened, and steps sounded in the hall. 

Amy hurried in, and looked rather ashamed(羞愧的) when she saw her sisters all waiting for her. 

"Where have you been, and what are you hiding behind you?" asked Meg, surprised to see that lazy Amy had been out so early. 

"You see, I felt ashamed of my present, so I ran round the corner and changed the little bottle for a big one and I gave all my money for it; and I'm truly trying not to be selfish any more. "

Another bang(砰砰作响) of the street door sent the girls to the table. 

"Merry Christmas, Marmee! Thank you for our books; we love them, " they said together. 

"Merry Christmas, little daughters! I'm glad you like the books. But I want to say one word before we sit down. Not far from here lies a poor woman with a little new-born baby. They were suffering hunger and cold. My girls, will you give them your breakfast as a Christmas present?"

They were all unusually hungry, having waited for nearly an hour, and for a minute no one spoke; only a minute, for Jo said, "I'm so glad you came before we began!"

English is very important to us. Here are two tips of learning English.

Read an English book, newspaper or magazine.

Reading is a necessary part of learning a new language, so don't forget to read! Find something you are really interested in whether that's a famous English novel, a copy of The New York Times, or a fashion magazine, and then start working your way through it. If you find the content(内容) boring, you will be less inclined(倾向于······的）to continue with it.

Again, make an active effort to actually understand what you're reading;don't just skim over it. Mark any words or phrases that you don't understand, and then look them up in the dictionary.

If you're alone, you could also try reading aloud. You will get the benefits of reading aloud.For example, this will allow you to improve your reading comprehension(理解力)as well as your pronunciation.

Keep a diary in English.

Besides reading and listening comprehension,you should also spend some time improving your written English skills. This may be one of the most difficult aspects of your language learning, but it is really important. Writing in English will help you to work on your sentence structure,grammar and spelling.

Try to keep an English diary in which you write down a few sentences every day. It doesn't have to be deeply personal. You could write about the weather,what you ate for dinner or what your plans are for the day.If you feel comfortable with it, get a native speaker to look over what you've written and check it for any mistakes. This will help you to avoid making the same mistakes over and over again.

Dear Mom,

Time flies quickly. Two months has gone by since I joined this boarding school. Everything is going well. During my first month here, I was like a fish out of water. I came to realize how many things I should thank you for.

On the cold winter days, I have to get up early almost every morning to fetch hot water. I began to feel ashamed that I never said "thank you" every time you prepared (准备) hot water for me each morning on winter days before I got up.

I am no longer that girl who was often unable to find her books in her bedroom. It used to take me a lot of time to collect all the books for the day's classes. But I have gotten over that bad habit now. And now I know how much time you used to take to collect my books every evening.

I have learned to do the laundry on my own now. I came to realize that washing clothes is a boring job, especially on winter days. Sometimes there is no hot water and I have to wash my clothes with cold water by hand.

I came to know how grateful (感激的)I should be to have you as my Mom. Thank you, Mom.

 When I was a teenager, my parents were never interested in the music I liked. They always said to me,"David, the music you listen to is noisy. Why do you like listening to it so much?" At the same time, they described the music that they liked as"beautiful".

 In fact, they are not the only ones who have this opinion. As I' ve grown older, I' ve often heard my friends say, "Today's music is terrible." Many older people just don't like new music. But why is that?

 The exposure effect(曝光效应) may explain this. It means the more familiar(熟悉的) we are with something, the more probably we will like it. When we are in our early teens, we usually spend a lot of time listening to popular music and discussing it with our friends. We come to understand the new songs and artists during this time really well. After we become 30 years old, we are busy working and raising our families. We don't have much time to look for new music. Instead, we like to listen to our old favorite songs that bring us back to our happy and simple days. According to studies, when we are 33 years old, most of us will completely stop exploring new music.

 But I think there is another reason why older people dislike new music. Most popular music, after all, is not written for them. It is made for young people. Some kinds of music began by young people as ways to fight against out-of-date things. These kinds include punk, rap, hip-hop, heavy metal and more. Younger people love them naturally.
