One day, Jack's parents told him that his grandpa would retire (退休) after working for forty years. Jack said1, "I'm only seven, so it means my grandpa has been…er…a really long time!"

Plays are an important part of British culture. The West End theater district（区） in London is the best place to watch a professional play，but acting also takes place in every school and village hall across the country. 

There are over 2，500 non—professional drama groups in the UK today，and they are an active part of community life. People from all walks of life take on acting roles besides their daily jobs. They do it for fun，for the love of acting and as a way to meet new people. 

Not everyone in a drama club is a skilled actor，but enthusiasm（热情） is considered to be more important than talent!Friends，family members and neighbors enjoy getting together to watch the final performance and wishing the people they know"good luck". It's a great way of bringing communities together. 

Many people get a taste for acting at school. Every school puts on a play at least once a year，usually at Christmas，and parents love coming to watch their children perform. 

Ask any British person and they're sure to have happy memories of being in their school's Christmas play，whether they played the role of Mary or Joseph or perhaps even a sheep or a donkey!

Another Christmas theater tradition is the pantomime（圣诞童话剧）. Pantomimes are a type of musical comedy for families. The audience（观众） is encouraged to take part in the performance —singing along with the music and shouting to the actors. Pantomimes are really fun to watch，especially for children. 

①Colours are everywhere in our life. They have different meanings in different countries. Red is very important in China. Chinese people think it is a colour of good luck and happiness. So in China, you can see many red things here and there. 

②In the New Year, Chinese parents always put some money in a red envelope named hongbao. They give it to their children because they hope they can be healthy. People also write some good words on the red paper called chunlian as good wishes for the New Year. 

③On birthdays, some Chinese people like wearing red clothes and eating red eggs. They hope they can be healthy and have a long life. 

④For Chinese people, red is not just the name of the colour. In fact, it's the colour of the Chinese spirit(精神). 

One day, Carol received a package. There was a letter and a 1 seed(种子) from her uncle. The letter said,

Dear Carol,

This is a magic sunflower seed for you.2 it, and it will grant(满足) your three wishes. Remember to be patient-一 the world has its own rhythm(节奏).

Carol thought, "A magic seed? It is probably my uncle' s3 , but why don' t I have a try? She then planted the seed in her garden and made her first wish, "4 I wish that the sunflower could grow as big as a mountain!"
