"Let's go on a horse instead of by bicycle," said Bob. And he took two of his friends into the mountains. They put up their tents and then rode off to a forest to see how the trees were growing. 

In the afternoon when they were about ten kilometers from their camp（营地）, it started to snow. More and more snow fell. Soon Bob could not find the road. Bob knew there were two roads. One road went to the camp, and the other went to his house. But all was white snow on the ground. Everything was the same. How could he take his friends back to the camp? 

Bob had an idea. The horses! Let the horses take them back! But what would happen if the horses took the road to his house? That would be a trip of thirty-five kilometers in such cold weather! 

It was getting late. They rode on and on. At last the horses stopped. Where were they? None of them could tell. Bob looked around. What was that under the tree? It was one of their tents! 

Andrew has a mental illness. He doesn't speak. He had used a picture chart to communicate. The pictures stand for words—people, places, food and activities.

Years ago, Andrew's parents discovered that he could communicate more by a letter board. He could point to and spell out words and thoughts. Using the letter board needs time and effort for Andrew. He hated to use the letter board, so his parents always offered it to him.

On Andrew's 15th birthday, his mother took him to a shoe store. After buying the shoes, she said. "It's Andrew's birthday today. Fifteen! Now we're off to celebrate."

The salesmen said happy birthday to Andrew. Instead of having Andrew point to the "thank you" on his picture chart, his mother held up his letter board and asked Andrew how he'd like to respond. Andrew pointed to each letter one by one on the board— "Thank you." Andrew's mother smiled.

One of the salesmen asked what it was. "This is a letter board that Andrew uses to communicate," his mother replied. "We've practiced it for years. It's amazing. It's changed everything for us." Then the salesman told them he had a brother called Jason. "Jason is 30 and doesn't speak," he said.

"Andrew, what do you think?" his mother turned to Andrew. Andrew started pointing to letters, "Tell Jason..." She was excited. Andrew continued, "Tell Jason he will change everyone's opinion of him in 26 letters." Andrew's mother and the salesmen were all moved and happy.

Months later, Andrew's mother returned to the shoe store and learned that Jason is now using a letter board to "speak". This is how Andrew affected another person's life in a split second (瞬间).

Today is my birthday and I am having a great time at the zoo with my dad. 

There are many lovely animals in the zoo, like monkeys, pandas and giraffes. I see some people feeding them with our food. I'm going to fed them. "It is not right to feed them with our food, " he says. 

"Why shouldn't I do so?" I turn to my dad and ask him. 

"Because it can make them sick when they are not getting the right food. For example, chocolate is children's favorite, but it is not good for many animals. So we should protect them and feed them with their own food. " he explains. 

"Sorry, Dad. Now I know it is important to understand that animals need to eat right. I won't do that again because it is bad for them. And thank you for telling me that. "

My dad smiles and says, "Good for you, Jim. I am so happy that you are learning to think about the result before you do something. We can help the animals by being responsible for their health. What's more, instead of waiting for someone to feed them. I think you should keep in mind that animals are our friends, and we should help them to live freely and naturally. "

I am glad to have such a meaningful conversation with my dad, because he teaches me how to take care of animals. 

One day a man saw an old lady standing by her expensive car, clearly in need of help. So he stopped his old truck and got out. Although he was smiling, the old lady was worried. Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look safe.

The man could see that she was frightened, so in his friendliest voice he said. "I'm here to help you, madam. Why don't you wait in the car where it's warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson."Bryan quickly fixed the car and the lady thanked him. Then she asked how much she should pay him.

But Bryan wanted no money. He was just giving a hand to someone in trouble. This was normal for him. He said, "If you really want to repay me, next time you see someone in need, help them and hink of me."

After saying goodbye, the lady continued down the road until she reached a small café where she decided to stop for something to eat. As the pretty waitress took her order, the lady noticed she was nearly eight months pregnant. Although the waitress looked tired she was very kind. As the lady was going to pay the $10 bill she remembered Bryan's words.

She paid with a hundred-dollar bill. But when the waitress returned with the change the lady was gone. On the table she saw a small note. There were tears in her eyes when she read it, "Somebody once helped me the way I'm helping you. If you want to pay me back, continue being kind to others." Under the note were nine more $100 bills.

Was the old lady an angel? The waitress was so excited that she called her husband to tell him the news. "Bryan Anderson my dear... you're not going to believe what just happened..."

In 1937, my father, who was almost 20 years old, started a long journey. He traveled a thousand miles across China with his university, Zhejiang University, during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression(抗日战争). The Chinese government wanted to keep the university students safe because they were important for the country's future. As the university planned for the journey, the Head Librarian of Zhejiang Library, asked the university to take a valuable collection of books with them.

The books were called" Siku Quanshu". Created in the 18th century, this was a huge encyclopedia(百科全书) with 2.3 million pages and about 997 million words. It was so important that plans were made to protect it at any cost, even though it added another 230 boxes to the students' cargo.

The journey was not easy. Students and teachers were facing the dangers from air attacks.(空袭). They were always tired and hungry. They had to sleep on the ground in old temples(寺庙) but they continued their classes whenever they could. To protect the books, they tried to move by boat or truck whenever possible; at other times, they would put the boxes into carts(手推车). Sometimes the students had to carry some of the books in their backpacks. One scary moment was when a box of the Siku Quanshu books fell into a river. They quickly saved the books and dried them in a local temple.

After 1,400 miles and 28 months on the road, the university group finally reached a small town called Zunyi in Guizhou province. They stayed there in simple classrooms and dorms, until the war moved deeper into China. To further protect the Siku Quanshu, the books were hidden in a nearby cave, guarded by university staff. The books made it through the war in surprisingly good condition and were sent back to Zhejiang Library.

This amazing story shows how a group of young students and their teachers did everything they could to protect their culture's treasures. They faced many dangers and hardships, but they never gave up. They worked together to keep their knowledge safe.

{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(在……期间) the Qing Dynasty(1644—1911), Yangzhou was a center for business and {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(文化). Many artists lived there. Among these artists was a special group of eight painters. They were all from poor families but they were truly {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(有才能的). They had their {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(自己的) styles(风格) and their paintings were mirrors of {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(普通的) lives. Their paintings touched many people's{#blank#}6{#/blank#} (内心). They became quite famous and {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(百) of rich traders went to buy their paintings. So the other painters disliked them and called them"Yangzhou baguai". Some {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(甚至) called them"choubaguai". Although it wasn't a nice name, people {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(相信) their paintings were great.

 Today, "Yangzhou baguai" is still used to refer to the eight painters, but"Choubaguai" now {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (失去) its original meaning and just refers to ugly people in general.
