There are three friends waiting (等待) for Yao  Wei.  It is 8:25 p.m. Yao Wei is late. They want to know if he will say "sorry" for being late. 5 minutes later, Yao Wei arrives. But he doesn't say "sorry" when he arrives. To their surprise, he only says, "Hey, thanks for waiting." The others say, "You're welcome." They feel it is fine, then they have dinner.

Sometimes we can say "thank you", not "sorry". For example, you are feeling sad about something, and you're talking about it with a friend for a long time. You may say "Thank you for listening", but not "Sorry for talking too much". Sometimes, "thank you" can sound better than "sorry".

② The Bai people use a very old way, tie-dye(扎染), to dye clothes. Tie-dye has a history of nearly 1,500 years. During the Tang and Song dynasties, people chose tie-dyed clothes as gifts.

③The Mongolian people live in the Mongolian yurts(蒙古包). These yurts are large round tents and their tops look like umbrellas. They are the traditional homes of the Mongolian people. The yurts are usually white because they're made of sheep's wool. And white is a symbol of happiness.

④ The Zhuang people like singing even more than talking. On the third day of the third Chinese lunar month, they hold a big singing festival. It is thrilling and wonderful. Men and women singers sing in pairs. The winners are the "king" and "queen" of singing.

⑤The Miao people have a special festival, the Manghao Festival. It's in the first Chinese lunar month every year. The Miao people regard Manghao as a hero who helped to protect their homes. At the festival, young men dress up like Manghao and touch others to send good wishes.

Whenever we think about something, most of us have a feeling of words going through our minds. However, if you stop and try to listen to your own thoughts, you'll notice that they are not in order at all. It's easy to imagine that we think in the language that we speak, but this is completely wrong. Language can show the results of our thinking, but it's not the thinking itself. 

Getting the joke

Think about what happens when you "get" a joke: "I've decided to sell my Hoover (吸尘器). . . well, it was just collecting dust (灰尘). " Whether you laugh or not, you react (反应) at once. Then you try to put into words what the joke actually is. 

Another example is the thinking you need when playing a fast-moving video game. You might shout "Yes!"or "Got you!". But if you had to talk about all your plans aloud, your game play would slow down. Thoughts always come first and the expression of our thoughts in words comes later. 

Thinking in silence

Humans think about things without language all the time, and only report their thoughts in the language when they have time to do so. You can test this with a game. Read a word quickly, out loud or in your head. You'll find that while you're doing this, you won't be able to think with words, but you can still plan, reason and imagine, pretty much as normal. 

Smart minds

Just because humans don't need language to think, it doesn't mean that words don't help us. The real magic of language is that it allows people to share their thoughts with others. This means you don't have to face the world by yourself-you can learn from ideas created by the elderly. This lets humans develop science and technology, laws and stories. People can think without language, but language makes humans so smart. 

Taking notes(笔记) is an important part of learning. Students listen to the teacher. They write down the important things. Or they use a computer. These days, many students take a computer to class to type(打字) their notes. 

Some people think that using a computer is better. People type faster than they write. That means they can write more. If you can type fast, you can type every word the teacher says. 

Computers are becoming very common in classrooms. Almost every student in university has a computer small enough to take to class in order to type notes. Fewer students write things down. So there is a trend in schools now to spend less time on teaching kids how to write. Schools are moving away from teaching younger students how to write by hand. Many people see no need for writing by hand. 

However, studies advise that it is good to write things down. When people can't write every word, they have to think about it more. They have to pick out what is important. And the act of writing seems to help them to remember. Studies show that people who write down their notes remember the information better. A new study, done by Princeton University and University of California, found that students who took notes by hand learned more than those who used a computer. In the study, 65 university students listened to the teacher and took notes with pens or computers. Then they did tests about how well they remembered and understood the lesson. Results show that pen users do better than those who take notes with their computers. 

I was in line waiting to pay. A little boy in the front was buying some clothes. I noticed that   the little boy was paying mostly with change(零钱). It seemed that he broke his pig bank(猪形储蓄罐) to do this shopping. However, the cashier told him he was $ 8.00 short after counting his money.

 It was clear that the boy already used all the money. The lady in front of me said, "Well,I could pay half of that." I told the boy that I could pay the other half. We searched our handbags. However, both of us only had ten-dollar bills (纸币). Other customers behind began searching their pockets to find some change. It was amazing and moving that all these strangers seemed to have the same idea. All of us wanted to help the boy. Within minutes the cashier said, "I have too much money." The cashier didn't need our ten-dollar bills. Then the lady in front of me said,"Wait! I didn't get a chance to give anything!"

I smiled at her and said, "You did your share, because it was your idea and you started all this." The little boy smiled and thanked us. I was left with a good feeling. I saw the love and goodness of others all around me. The woman in front of me smiled and said, "It feels good to give, doesn't it?" I smiled back and said, "Yes!"
