An early kind of music from Austria may not seem like music at all, but it is a kind of singing: yodeling. People use their voice to yodel, without using any instruments like violin or piano. At first, Austrian people used yodeling to call each other between mountains* or to call their animals. It was just a loud*sound without words, but it had different meanings, like "It's time for lunch." Or "I'm near here."

Yodeling developed* into songs in the 19th century. There were yodeling groups singing in theatres and music halls in Austria. Later, people tried to write down the songs. A musician called Toby Reiser traveled through Austria, listened to people yodeling and wrote down all he heard. In the 1930s, people around the world got to know yodeling. American country singer Jimmie Rodgers created "blue yodel" songs and made yodeling part of the country music. Today, people can even hear yodeling in rock music, and it is still loved in countries like Britain and America.

The singing of yodeling is special because it repeats* a high-low-high-low sound. Everyone can yodel. Yodeling is not about singing perfectly, but being loud. To try it, you can just find a room and sing "Little-old-lady-WHO!" Begin with "little old lady" in your chest voice*, and then jump up to your head voice to sing "who". You will soon know what it means to "feel the yodel".

Next time you are on a mountain top, try yodeling! It's a wonderful feeling and can bring you a lot of fun!

It's half past three in the afternoon. Many students are doing sports in the playground. 

Look! Li Lei is playing basketball with his classmates. Some girls are watching them playing. They look very happy. Li Lei likes playing basketball. He thinks it's interesting for him to play it. And he is good at it. He is in the school basketball club. And he often teaches his classmates to play basketball. 

Liu Daming likes soccer. He thinks playing soccer is relaxing. Now he is practicing playing soccer with his friends. He is running with the balls. Next week, they will(将要) have a soccer game, so they practice hard these days. 

Some students are taking a walk in the playground. They are walking and talking happily. Some students are in the classroom. They are talking about their studies. The girl in red looks very happy. And she is reading a storybook. 

What about the teachers? Some of them are working in the office. And some are talking with their students. They are really nice teachers. 

In her grandparents' old house, Maya discovered an old family calendar, with each page filled out carefully.

On June 6, 1892: "Helped Mr Thompson repair his house." On November 14, 1907: "1 my time at an old people's home."

Curious, she asked her grandmother about it.

"That is the tradition of our family," her grandmother explained. "Every day, for generations, we complete one act of kindness and take it down. No matter how 2 it is."

Maya was interested. "Why?"

Her grandmother smiled, "It's a belief that through continuous kind actions, we can create a life of 3 . Every day, we find a moment of light through offering help to others, even when the world around us is dark."

With admiration, Maya decided to keep the tradition. Every night, she would record her act of kindness for the day. As the years went by, Maya's entries of her kind act 4 . from comforting a distressed stranger on the bus to organizing community clean-ups.

One day, as she sat at a café, a young woman came to her. "Are you Maya?" She asked politely.

Maya nodded, feeling 5 .

The woman went on, "Years ago, you taught me for free when my family couldn't afford lessons. Because of you, I graduated top of my class. Today, I 6 an organization providing help for students from poor families."

Maya was moved and proud. She realized her actions were creating ripples（涟漪） in ways she had never imagined.

The calendar became a community legend. Inspired by Maya, the town started a "Calendar Day", encouraging everyone to do good.

When Maya was old, she often sat with her grandchildren, turning the 7 pages. "This was when your grandpa and I met. I helped him find his lost dog."

One day, her oldest grandchild, Sophie, looked up from the calendar. "I want to 8 this, Grandma."

Maya 9 the calendar over. She knew the tradition would live on.

Years after Maya passed, the town built a statue in her honor, with the words on its base:

In memory of Maya and the generations before her who believed in the power of everyday 10 .

My best friend Marcela and I are schoolmates. If you ask me to 1 her, I will say she is very pretty. She has long black 2 , round eyes and a small nose. She is not very tall, but not short either. 

Marcela and I like 3  interesting things together. She is a funny person and always makes me 4 .

There are some very good inventions which, for one reason or another, don't become popular. These inventions should be better known, even though I think that some of them are crazy. Let's have a look at some of these inventions and see if you agree that they should be more successful. 

The Australians had a great idea to stop people from drinking and driving. The idea was that if a driver wanted to start the car, she or he would have to blow into a bag first. If there was too much alcohol(酒精) in their breath, the car wouldn't start. It sounded like a great idea to me, but people said that they might need to drive the car in an emergency even if they had drunk too much alcohol. Another idea I liked was an invention by a scientist who thought his children watched too much TV. He linked the TV to an exercise bike so that the electricity to power the TV was generated(产出) by the bike. If the children wanted to watch a lot of TV, they had to pedal(踩踏板) very hard. I found another invention on the Internet which was intended (倾向于) to encourage good habits. Believe it or not, this invention was an ashtray(烟灰缸) which spoke to you when you lit a cigarette! The "voice" of the ashtray was activated (启动) by the heat from the cigarette and reminded you how dangerous it is to smoke. 

One of the strangest inventions I have come across is a bicycle which can cross rivers! The idea was that when you came to a river, you could inflate a huge plastic ball all around the bike. You would then get into the ball which would float on the river while you pedaled the bike inside the ball! Why not use a bridge instead? A friend of mine at school once bought a strange pair of football shoes. On the bottom of the shoes there was a rotating pad of studs (转动钉垫). The idea was that you would change direction more quickly if the studs rotated with you. The problem was that every time you stopped you changed direction whether you wanted to or not! I think he wore those shoes twice! One thing I would like is a baseball cap with a built-in radio so you can listen to sport all day with your hands free. While we are on the subject of sport, the Americans invented a kind of robot for sports fans. If you were watching your team on TV on your own, you could press a button and the robot would do "high fives" with you! Fantastic! I wonder if you have any good ideas for inventions like these.
