In 1826, a Frenchman named Nieple needed pictures for his business. But he was not a good artist. So he invented a very simple camera. He put it in a window of his house and took a picture of his garden. That was the first photo.

The next important date in the history of photography was in 1837. That year, Daguerre, another Frenchman, took a picture of his reading room. He used a new kind of camera in a different way. In his picture you could see everything very clearly, even the smallest thing. The kind of photo was called a Daguerreotype. Soon, other people began to use Daguerre's way. Travelers brought back wonderful photos from all over the world. People took pictures of famous buildings, cities and mountains.

In about 1840, photography was developed. Then photographers could take pictures of people and moving things. That was not simple. The photographers had to carry a lot of films and other machines. But this did not stop them, for example, some in the United States worked so hard.

Mathew Brady was a famous American photographer. He took many pictures of great people. The pictures were unusual because they were life like. 

Photography also became one kind of art by the end of the 19th century. Some photos were not just copies of the real world. They showed the author's ideas and feelings, like other kinds of art.

Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it? Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.

A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 metres and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert(沙漠), so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It's like someone walking six kilometres through a dark forest.

Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.

Some animals can sense the earth's magnetic field (磁场), while humans can't. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that? It is still a mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.

However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city light s are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.

Asking ChatGPT 4, an AI chatbot, to write a 100-word email might take just a few seconds. But have you ever wondered about the environmental influence of this technology? The rapid growth of AI is raising concerns. Many people realize that the tool comes with hidden costs, especially the large amount of energy used by digital services.

One of the main problems is the"water footprint", the total water the AI chatbot uses in its lifetime.AI depends on data(数据) centers, which house servers that store and manage data. Once turned on, the servers produce heat. To cool them down, engineers use pipes to bring in cold water from cooling towers to take away the heat.

Data centers operate around the clock, making them very"thirsty". According to The Washington Post, ChatGPT 4 needs about 519 milliliters of water, or a little more than a bottle for every 100-word email. Each year in the US, ChatGPT 4 uses over 435 million liters of water just for emails - enough to support a regular US family for 1,050 years.

Meanwhile, data centers are"hungry" for electricity. Writing a 100-word email requires 0.14 kilowatt-hours of electricity, which can power 14 light bulbs for one hour. Yearly, ChatGPT 4 uses up over 120,000 megawatt-hours(兆瓦时) of power just to help write emails. This is enough to support all homes in Washington DC for 20 days.

Now, businesses are looking for different ways to make AI more environmentally friendly. Microsoft uses cold metal plates with cold water to cool machines. Clean energy is also helpful; for example, Tencent's data center is powered by solar energy. Another company, Google, uses developed cooling systems that rely on outside air to cut down cooling needs.

According to a study in Nature Climate Change, the population of polar bears will be in serious drop by the year 2080. The cause is melting (融化) sea ice. Without ice, the bears must walk on the bank which is away from their main food source. That means the animals will be in danger because of lacking food.

"There's not enough food on land to support a polar bear population." Doctor Smith, the study's lead writer said. Lacking of food induces another problem. Mother bears may not be fat enough to produce milk for their babies. Some bear populations could stop having babies, leading to a rapid drop in numbers.

Arctic (北极) sea ice usually melts in the spring and summer, and then grows in the winter. But now, the ice is taking longer to grow back. Weather reports say the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet. Ice here has reduced 13% every 10 years since the 1970s. The Arctic is home to about 25, 000 polar bears. Scientists have known that the animals are in danger.

But the study also notes that it is still possible to slow Arctic melting. The world can reduce the burning of fossil fuels (石化燃料) and lower the greenhouse gas. "Saving the polar bears is up to us, I believe that there is hope. But humans need to act quickly to turn that hope into a reality." Doctor Smith said.
