In 1888, a new invention showed a series of pictures in which people moved. This is the world's first movie. It lasted only two s{#blank#}1{#/blank#}, but viewers were surprised. It looked like the event was happening right in f{#blank#}2{#/blank#} of them. The movie showed people walking in a garden.

Before this time, a camera could take only one picture at a time. These pictures didn't move. However, once a series of pictures could be taken and shown quickly, the images s{#blank#}3{#/blank#} to move. First, they were called moving picture. Later, that name was shortened to movies.

For their first 40 years, movies had no sound. They were called silent movies. In the 1920s, sound was a{#blank#}4{#/blank#} to movies. This meant that the a{#blank#}5{#/blank#} could hear actors speaking to one another.

My name is Qin Lan. My home town is in Gulangyu Island. Do you know Gulangyu Island? It is in Xiamen. Gulangyu Island is a small place, but it is very nice and clean. There are no cars, no buses and no bikes. People only walk. So it is very quiet.

Purple Running Track

The Stade de France is one of the most famous stadiums in France. It hosted the 1998FIFA World Cup. During the game, the French national soccer team won 3-0 against Brazil, lifting the World Cup trophy(奖杯) for the first time.

For the Paris Olympics, the athletics track will be purple for the first time in Olympic history. This special track can help athletes perform better and even break records. When the Games start, a lavender(薰衣草) color will fill the stadium, bringing a special French style.

Medals

The medals are round in shape with a hexagon(六角形) at the center. The hexagon of every me dal is a piece of iron from the Eiffel Tower. The leftover metal of the tower was stored secretly for years. The emblem(会徽) and the Olympic five rings are on it. Fine lines project(投射) outward around it, making each medal look like a shining sun.

New Sport

A new event called breaking will show up at the Games for the first time! This street dance stared in New York in the 1970s and is part of hip- hop culture, with cool moves like spins and flips.

The competition in Paris will have 16 males and 16 females, all born by Dec 31°,2008. They will compete in one- on- one battles to music chosen by a DJ. They will try to win each round and get the gold medal in the final.

 The Lisu's Kuoshi Festival(傈傈族阔时节) is one of the most fantastic ethnic (民族的) festivals in Yunnan province. Kuoshi is local Lisu language, which means New Year. It usually falls between the last ten- day period of December and January of the next year. People often get together to celebrate the coming new year!

 In the morning, the breathtaking " Climbing Ladder of Knives" starts the celebration. The well- trained barefoot Lisu man climb up a 20- meter- high ladder made of 36 sharpened knives. Those who climb the ladder are called " Nipa", which means wizard(巫婆). They are also regarded as heroes in their village. At the top of the ladder, Nipas perform some extremely difficult activities and win warm applause (掌声) from the audience.

 In the afternoon, the organizers ho id some wonderful competitions and ceremonies for festival- goers, including bamboo- pole climbing, horse- riding, crossbow shooting. People from different age groups enthusiastically join in the competitions, showing their special skills to other people.

 In the evening, there are also various exciting activities. The villagers get together around the fire, enjoying homemade rice wine, performing their folk songs and dances. The celebration often reaches almost the whole night.

 Kuoshi Festival is an ethnic carnival when the Lisu people throw themselves in joyful celebration. The exciting and wonderful activities show the colorful lifestyle, bravery and enthusiasm of the Lisu ethnic.
