Walt Disney began to make cartoon movies when he was a young man. But he didn't have much money then. One day a mouse ran near his desk while he was working in his small office.

    ＂Would you like to be my pet?＂ Disney decided to make a cartoon about it.

    ＂I am making a cartoon about a mouse named Mortimer,＂ he told his wife.

    ＂Mortimer Mouse? I think Mickey Mouse would be a better name,＂ she said.

    ＂You are right. It would,＂ Disney agreed and made many Mickey Mouse cartoons.

    People all over the world saw Mickey and loved it. Mickey Mouse made Disney famous. Then came Donald Duck, and Goofy Dog and others. Disney began to make long cartoons. Then he made cartoon movies for television.

    In 1955, Disney opened a wonderful land of make-believe in California. Real boats, castles, trains, mountains, rivers, all are in one beautiful park. Millions of people came to Disneyland.

    He died in 1966, but the world will not forget him. Mickey Mouse and all his cartoons will help us to remember him.

Have you ever paid attention to your school's guards or dining hall staff(员工)?Would you say"Good morning"to your school's cleaners? For Ding Jiacheng, a high school student, it's a problem that many students don't respect these non-teaching workers. He wanted to make a change.

The boy from the Hangzhou Entel Foreign Language School, together with several other students, worked on a project called "The Invisible (隐身的) Are Great". They hoped more students would see and respect those people who play important roles in their school lives. The project won a prize at the China Thinks Big, a competition held by Harvard University and Tsinghua University to encourage teenagers to study social problems.

"My team members and I sent questionnaires (问卷) to about 158 students,"said Ding."In one question, 56 percent of the students said they would greet those non-teaching workers, while only 17 percent strongly believed that every student should do so."

The team also focused on the communication between students and workers.

"When most students follow the rules of their teachers, one-third of the students go against the rules of the dormitory attendants(宿舍管理员)," said Ding."It shows that students treat non-teaching staff differently from teaching staff."

The main reason, according to Ding, is that students know little about the work done by non-teaching staff. Students also have few chances to communicate with them. Therefore, Ding's team shot videos to show staff working around the school. They also held a basketball match between students and non-teaching staff to help them know more about each other."We've also made a series of stickers (贴纸),"said Ding."We hope these cute images will help young people like the non-teaching staff more."

"The activity helped me understand that we can all make a difference through our creative ideas," Ding said.

Stanley Karras works as a meteorologist (气象学家) in Tampa, Florida. His job is to follow hurricanes (飓风) by plane and provide information about them for scientists.

What do you like most about your job?

I love the travel most. Running after hurricanes has taken me all over the world. It's exciting to end up in different cities and different countries day after day. If you're a meteorologist, you have to love flying. I also love working with top scientists. I have learnt so much from them and we have had a lot of exciting time together.

Do you make any sacrifices (牺牲) to do this job?

Yes, I'm so far away from my family. They all live in the UK. My wife is with me, of course, but her family is also in the UK. So we're pretty cut off from them all over here.

What would you like to do next?

I'd like to join a space programme and be the first meteorologist in space, but I have not come up with an experiment(实验) to do in space yet. There aren't any hurricanes!

What tips would you give to someone wanting to do your job?

Study maths, science and meteorology well. There are many areas in meteorology to study. I have taken the hurricane hunter path, but you could be a weather reporter or study in other areas.

How would you like to build a time machine? Paper, sticks, glue and string are all you need. Put them together to build a kite. A kite connects you to the past. 

No one knows who flew the first kite. It was probably someone in China or perhaps in Indonesia. Indonesian fishermen hung fishhooks on kites and sent them out to sea to catch fish. About 2, 000 years ago, Chinese farmers flew kites to welcome the New Year and bring good luck to the earth. 

In China, people also used kites during wartime. One Chinese story tells how soldiers put noise makers on kites and flew them at night over the enemy(敌人) camps. The enemies felt afraid by the noise and ran away. 

About 1, 300 years ago, Chinese travellers took kites to Japan. Soon kites filled the sky there. Kites reached Thailand about 700 years ago. During floods (洪水), Thai farmers flew kites over their fields. They hoped the kites would drive away the clouds and stop the rain. Over time, kites flew their way out of Asia. Today people have a passion for kites all over the world. Kite fans meet at festivals in many parts of the world and have great fun. 

Over the years, kites have also helped people to understand the world. In 1749, for example, thermometers (温度计) were tied to kites to measure temperatures. In 1906, cameras hanging from kites took pictures of San Francisco, California after an earthquake. The photos helped people plan what to do. 

Kites also helped inventors find out how to make airplanes. The Wright brothers studied how kites flew, which helped them make the first successful airplane. 

Since the ancient Chinese set their kites into the air, people have loved flying kites. Kites give us ways to celebrate, relax and explore. So fly a kite! Enjoy the sense of wonder that kite flyers have for centuries.
