With more and more rain falling, it's time for snakes to be active. Living in the city, it never crosses your mind that we might meet them face to face.

Most people are afraid of snakes. They may think snakes are dangerous and ugly. There are more than 2,000 kinds of snakes. Most of them live in mountains or forests, and in cities sometimes we can find them in grass or other dark places. Snakes can't walk or run because they have no legs or feet, but these long and thin animals can move very fast on their stomachs. Snakes usually have green, yellow or black skins, which make it difficult for their enemies to find them. In winter they hibernate in holes. They look for a hole to stay inside, in the ground, or in a rock or a tree. They do not wake up again until spring comes. Snakes feed on mice, frogs, bird eggs and so on.

Snakes play an important part in nature. We can make useful medicine with them. Without their help, the rodents (啮齿动物) will be out of control. But many of them are in danger of disappearing. Houses and buildings take up the land where snakes live. Many snakes lose their lives in traffic, and people often kill snakes for their skins or meat.

You are running around in the park. But then suddenly，you fall and hurt yourself. "Ow!" you cry. This sound is very familiar to us all. Crying out when we get hurt is a natural reaction. But what is it about this sound that makes us shout it out？

Scientists from the National University of Singapore now believe they've found the answer. The effort of shouting the word "ow" actually interferes （干预） with pain messages traveling to the brain. So by shouting it out，it distracts us from the feeling of pain. 

The scientists tested how long volunteers could hold their hands in very cold water. There were five rounds of the test. In the first round，they were allowed to shout "ow" when they felt pain. In another round，they had to stay silent. 

The results showed that volunteers were able to keep their hands in the cold water for longer when they were allowed to shout out. They managed around 30 seconds on average，five seconds more than when they had to remain silent. 

"We found that a simple vocal act such as saying 'ow' helps individuals deal with pain，" the report from the scientists stated. 

What's more，expressions of pain are shared among languages. While cries of "ow" or "ouch" are heard in English，South Africans yell "eina"

Scientists said in the report： "Shared among these languages is a sound during which the mouth simply opens，the tongue lies flat （水平的） and the lips unrounded. It is a simple sound that requires little control while maximizing （充分利用）

Wang Xiaojun, 49, has a small hotel in Pingyao, a county in Shanxi. She opened it in 2002. This January, Wang got an email from her friend Bernard Frigara in France. "I just want to tell you how much I miss Pingyao, you and your family. I love to walk around Pingyao and ride a bicycle there. . . " the 75-year-old artist wrote in the e-mail. 

When Frigara first visited Pingyao in 2004, he stayed in Wang's hotel. In less than 20 years, Frigara went to Pingyao six times, and he stayed in Wang's hotel everytime, for one or two months at a time. 

Wang and her family showed Frigara around Pingyao, washed clothes for him and celebrated(庆祝) his birthday. Once when Frigara didn't feel well, Wang took him to hospital. He wrote in his diary that he stayed in a wonderful hotel and that he felt at home there. In    return, Frigara taught Wang French and bought gifts for her children. Wang described her French friend as a kind and helpful man. 

Not long ago, Wang wrote a story between Frigara and her family named Wafting for you, my friend. "He will come to Pingyao again in the spring of 2024, " she said.
