An interview with Andy Griffiths

I go for long runs and bike rides beside the beach. An hour of exercise after a long day of writing gives me energy. Then I'm ready to write some more.

At first I write the stories by hand, and then I transfer (转录）them onto a computer. I like to write by hand when I travel. I find it very easy to lose myself in my diary when I am away from my usual activities.

I'm never happier than I'm thinking banana milk shakes. And I love fish. But I don't like drinking fish milk shakes. They are just terrible !

What is your favorite book ?

Alice in Wonderland. It has so many surprises and such silliness in it.

Only if I really have to. I much prefer the freedom and fun of writing for children.

You want to know about my stay in the UK, right? Well, to tell you the truth, it is really 1 fantastic experience to study here. I came to Woodpark School in London two months ago. Since then, I 2 in this school. I find that school life in the UK is very different from that in China.

In China, the first lesson begins at about eight o' clock and there are 3 lessons a day. The first lesson in the UK begins an hour 4 than that in China. Before the first lesson, students all wait in a special classroom. Then a teacher calls the roll(点名) to check if 5 has arrived on time. After that, students change classrooms. Everybody has his or her own course schedule. They go to different classrooms for different lessons instead of 6 in the same classroom. For example, if one's first lesson is Maths, he or she should go to the classroom for Maths.

Besides languages, Science, art, British students learn many 7 courses such as cooking and gardening at school. The boy in my host family once cooked Chinese soup for me. It really surprised me because it tasted as 8 as what my mum cooked.

How time flies! I have been in the UK 9 two months. I will study here fo another month. I am sure I 10 find out more differences in the future. Believe me!

Kathy could still remember the night she had to leave her home in Hungary. It was the beginning of World War（战争）II and her family had to leave their country as soon as possible. She quickly filled（充满）a bag with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and her treasure（珍宝）—a beautiful silk scarf. 

Kathy and her best friend, Monica, had asked their parents to buy them matching scarves. They each would wear the scarves as a symbol（象征）of their friendship. Kathy had no idea that she was going to America that night and would not be returning. 

Kathy kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview（面试）for good luck. And with the scarf, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview. 

That afternoon Eliza left the interview, feeling sure that she had got the job. So she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. As she was sitting at her table, she felt someone looking at her. Sitting next to her was an old woman, who could not take her eyes away from her. 

"I'm sorry, do I know you?" Eliza asked. 

"I`m sorry, dear, but you make me think of someone I once knew," the old woman replied. "My best friend looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like the one you're wearing around your neck. Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. She had heard stories of her grandmother's best friend and knew the meaning of the scarf. 

"My name's Monica, dear. I lived in Hungary as a child, but my family had to leave when I was fourteen years old. I've been living here in California from then on." said the old woman. 

Eliza could not believe her ears…

Judie's class was studying Chinese culture. One day, her teacher went into the classroom 1 some kites. He told them that kites 2 in China more than 2, 000 years ago. At the end of the class, he said, "The Chinese make kites that mean something important to them. I expect each of you 3 a kite that means something important to you. You will have a 4 understanding of kites than before. "

Judie decided to ask her dad for help as it was 5 first time to make a kite. 

"What do you think of when your see a kite?" her dad asked. 

Judie thought for a moment and 6 , "Butterflies. "

Judie's dad agreed that it would be a good idea to make a butterfly kite. They made a cross with some wood sticks, 7 then Judie painted a butterfly on a piece of white paper. Next they stuck the paper on the cross. Finally they tied a long tail to the bottom. 

The next morning, they took 8 kite to the park and tested it. "Wow!" she cried proudly. "9 high my butterfly flies!"

"Judie, can you tell me 10 butterflies?" asked her dad. 

Judie replied, "To me, butterflies mean beauty and freedom!"

 From voluntarily collecting historical materials related to the Great Wall in his Shanxi hometown in Province to becoming an official cultural heritage protector, Yuan Xuerui has spent over twenty years safeguarding the ancient wonder.

 China's Great Wall is one of the great wonders of the world and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built from 3 BC to the 1800s on the north of the country, the Great Wall has a total length of more than 20,000 kilometers.

 Yuan, 55, was born in Qingxibao at the foot of the ancient wall in Shanxi' s Daixian county, which is part of the city of Xinzhou. His love for the ancient wall motivated(激励) him to protect it, and when not engaged (从事) in farm work, he spent most of his time walking along the wall to collect bricks that had fallen off due to the long time and prepare for repairs. "What others think as a difficult and dull task of cultural heritage protection often brings me unexpected discoveries," Yuan said.

 He officially became a cultural heritage worker in 2018, and since then his duties have expanded from collecting bricks to organizing ancient documents related to the wall to better tell stories about it. As a heritage worker, Yuan has come to understand the meaning of the Great Wall."Each brick has endured(忍受) the test of time over hundreds of years — in some cases more than a thousand— carrying rich historical memories," he said.

 This summer, Yuan organized a campaign to call for people to collect bricks for the future repair of the wall. Many bricks were taken away from the Great Wall by local villagers to build their houses in the 1960s and 1970s. "As villagers' awareness of the need to protect the wall has grown, nowadays, when locals find fallen bricks along the Great Wall, they will pick them up," he said. "If they see garbage, they will also pick it up and throw it into bins."

 Have you ever lived in a school dormitory(宿舍)? Some students think1 at school is like taking a walk in a park. Well, it's not as 2 as you might imagine.

 Last year, my parents decided to let me live at school. I was 3 to hear this decision. I could be in control of4 without my parents managing me.

 However,5 I first arrived, I got anxious(焦虑的) about the strict rules. We have to study from 7a. m. to 10 p. m. every day. We6 to play with cellphones or go back to the dormitory to take showers during this time. I7 had an argument with one of my roommates. These things made me feel upset and homesick. I just wanted to go back home.

 At weekends,I did go back home. My mother talked to me. She comforted(安慰) me, "Don't be afraid.8 will be all right. Just try to think about 9 to improve the situation." My mother's words cheered me up.10 of my roommates had such problems. So I 11 solve my own problems.

 The next week, I tried my best to calm myself down and focus on(集中精力于) my work 12 three hours. It did not seem too hard. Then I talked with my roommates in 13 polite way and made more friends. I realize that everything14 on our own attitudes(态度) and I15 the dormitory life now.

 Every time I struggle (挣扎) with difficulties, I always think about this special experience. It gives me the courage to overcome them. Perhaps I have grown up through this.
