Every month, Zhang Lingling holds a party with her friends in a KTV room. At the party, all the people wear hanfu—a type of dress worn by the ancient Han people—and sing songs that are accompanied (伴奏) by traditional instruments or inspired by ancient poems.

"I'm really interested in clothes and songs based on traditional culture. I'm not buying the items just because they are Chinese—they just satisfy my aesthetic (审美的) needs," she told China Daily.

Like Zhang, there are many young people who have a passion for traditional Chinese culture. Looking for the reason behind this fascination with traditional culture, a professor Ji Fangfang said it's because traditional culture is the best way for young people to distinguish (区分) their national identity. They want to tell the world who they are. 

"Younger people know the world well through the Internet, and they need to express their uniqueness," Ji said.

While some prefer inheriting (传承) traditional Chinese culture, others are putting twists on it. Pop culture designer Yu Yang is one of them. When he made a series of products featuring the ancient God of Fortune, the god wore fashionable Chinese shoes and a cap, and had a microphone in his hand. "Pop culture is a universal language. I hoped more people would accept and love my work and know Chinese culture through my art pieces," he said in an interview.

After two rounds of the competition with 20 debaters (辩论者), I finally sat in the leader's chair in the finals of our school debate competition.

We began by debating whether the Internet makes people 1 or reduces communication with others. I personally held the former. However, many people didn't 2 my opinion. They thought the Internet makes people communicate less with each other. Then we had a debate.

Our team made lots of 3 for the competition. We discussed many topics about the argument. We 4 as many points as possible on cards so that we could give quick and correct answers. We also prepared more information for the competition. It seemed that we would surely 5 .

However, as I sat in front of thousands of people, things turned out 6 . In my opening speech, time flew by so fast that I felt 7 and failed to finish my speech properly. Then it was our opponents' (对手的) turn. They asked me several questions. But one of them could show my weakness. I had no choice but to 8 answering it. I was worried that we would lose marks because of my answers.

Luckily, our 9 paid off. Our team 10 won the competition. The debate taught me to look at everything in different ways and always be fully prepared.

It's 2: 30 in the afternoon. The house is quiet(安静的). " Tom?" Mom says. No one answers(没有人回答).

Mom comes to Tom's room. He is not on the bed, but his model plane is on the desk." He is not in his room, and he is not in the yard," Mom thinks. Then Mom comes to his grandparents' room. Tom likes to play with his grandpa's tape player, but he is not there. Mom looks for Tom everywhere. Where is Tom? Mom is worried. She wants to call Dad. She comes to the living room to get the phone." What's that?" Mom sees something black under the sofa. Oh, it's Eric, Tom's dog. It loves sleeping(睡觉) there. What is next to Eric? It's Tom!

People use languages to communicate. Any language has its ways to express people's minds. One of the ways in common is the use of idioms. An idiom is a group of words. It has a special meaning that is different from the usual meaning. For example, under the weather is an idiom meaning ill. So when people say "I'm under the weather", they are saying that they're not feeling well. Another example, in all weathers means in all kinds of weather. So, "There are homeless people sleeping on the streets in all weathers" tells us that homeless people sleep on the streets no matter whether it is cold or hot.

Different languages may have different ways to make idioms. For people who are learning a foreign language, idioms could cause misunderstandings and bring them endless problems. On the other hand if things are done right, idioms can also be a fun way of looking into a new culture and understanding how the people think and talk.

Metaphor（比喻）is often used in idioms. Let's read the following two examples:

▪Example 1: It makes my blood（血液）boil（煮沸）when my brother breaks my computer.

▪Example 2: The night was dark and quiet; my blood ran cold when I heard a strange noise outside on a dark night.

In neither situation above, can our blood reach the point so high or so low in temperature. However, with the situations the two sentences created, it is not difficult to understand the  ▲  feeling in the first example and very afraid in the second.

Of course, not all idioms are this easy to understand. When we come to idioms of a foreign language, a good dictionary of idioms is always suggested.

Bonnie and Chester are two squirrels(松鼠). They are good friends. One day Bonnie goes to her friend's home. She sees Chester is not very happy. 

"I can't find my nuts(坚果), " says Chester. . They are not under my bed or in my desk. They are for my family. I must find them. 

"I can help you. " says Bonnie. 

Bonnie sees a white bag under the chair. But the nuts are not in it. Then she sees a photo on Chester's desk. In the photo, Chester has a big brown box. A lot of nuts are in the box. 

"Box? Where is it?" Bonnie thinks. She looks here and there. 

"Look, Chester!" says Bonnie. "What's in the box?"

"Oh, nuts!" says Chester "You're great!"

Then he goes up to the top(顶部) of the bookcase. Chester is happy now. 

It was a fine day last Friday.
