It is one of the most famous books in the world; yet it has no story and no interesting characters, no exciting beginning and no satisfying ending. And yet it keeps being printed-and it keeps growing!

It began in 1857 as just an idea of a group of people who thought the world needed one to show the history of English words from 1150 CE to the present. It wasn't until the late 1870s, however, when James Murray joined the project that it began to grow. He planned one of about 6,400 pages in four volumes(卷),completed in 10 years. He did most of his work in a small building where he and his workmates collected millions of pieces of paper, each one with a word and an example sentence written on it. Murray and his workmates worked hard, but after five years they had only reached the word ant! It was until 1928 that it was completed and came out. Unluckily, Murray did not live to see the completion of his life's work; he passed away in 1915. As soon as it came out, people started to update it. In 1933, it became 12 volumes. Between 1972 and 1986, four more volumes were added. In 2020 it was reprinted in 20 volumes. Three years later, all the volumes were put onto CD-ROM, and it can be bought online at present.

It not only is a record of where the English language has come from but also become an important part of the history of English-speaking cultures around the world.

 Do you like English? How do you study English? Most students want to be good at English. And reading English newspapers is a good way to improve (提高) students' English. It helps students improve their reading, and students can also learn something new from newspapers. What is the correct way to read an English newspaper?

 The first step is to find a right newspaper with good language. Then turn to the front page and read the headlines(标题), because the front page usually tells important things. 

 Second, read newspapers every day. Remember words through the sentences. Don't look up every unknown word in your dictionary. You can try to guess the meaning according to the sentences. If your guess is wrong, don' t be sad. You will become familiar(熟悉的) with the words after reading them in different passages. 

 Reading English newspapers is very helpful. We can both improve our English and know about the world.

③Do comparisons make you happy? Comparing yourself to those around you is natural and we often do it without realizing it. It can help us to find our achievements and to form friendships with new people who have similar interests. However, it's important to remember that nobody is perfect in real life. It's also important to take note of how the comparison is making you feel.

④"If you begin to feel quite low, focus on your own strengths and what you are good at," says Abbott. In other words, you can ask yourself questions like "____", "What do I feel good about?" and "What improvements can I notice?", which can help you trust yourself.

⑤Maybe sometimes you are wondering "What if all my friends are better than me?". Dr. Antrobus says that jealousy (妒忌) is an ordinary feeling but focusing on improving your own performance can help you feel just as successful. He also mentions bat learning to celebrate your friends' success can not only help to cheer your friends up but also help you feel good. "It will encourage you to build each other up."
