Ye Lianping is a 96- year- old re tired teacher from a village in Anhui Province. He has been teaching left- behind children there for free during the past 24 years. 

Teaching has always been an important part of Ye's life. After he retired, he began offering free English- language classes to left- behind children. He first set up a classroom in his own house. Later, with the help of the government, he got another two classrooms. To provide education for more children, he also set up the Ye Lianping Scholarship Fund with almost all his money and the donations（捐赠物） from others. So far, it has helped hundreds of left- behind children. 

Ye is quite generous（慷慨的） to these children, but he spends very little money on himself. He lives a very simple life. He lives with his wife in a house built over 30 years ago. He never buys any drinks. And he has been wearing the same jacket for over 40 years. 

Although he is getting older, Ye is never tired of teaching. In 2018, he got hurt while riding a bicycle to buy vegetables. Instead of resting in bed for recovery, he quickly returned to class with a walking stick. 

Ye is racing against time to spend as much time as possible on left- behind children's education. People call him "the candlelight of the village". But he said, "I'm just a firefly（萤火虫）, muking little light, not as much light as a candlelight can give. "

China is a country with many colorful days and festivals. The Dragon Head Raising Day （Longtaitou） is one of them. 

This special day is on the second day of the second month in the Chinese lunar calendar （阴历）. It stands for the start of spring and farming. This year，the day fell on March 10. 

The dragon is important in Chinese culture. We Chinese people call ourselves the"descendants （传人） of the dragon". Therefore，people celebrate the Dragon Head Raising Day with many customs（传统） about dragons. 

On the day in ancient times（古代），people put ashes （灰） in the kitchen. This was to" lead the dragon into the house". People believed that with the help of the dragon（收成） in autumn. 

Also，people eat special foods on that day. The foods are usually named after dragons. For example，people eat" dragon whisker （细须）"noodles and dumplings called" dragon teeth". 

Today，many customs have faded away （消退）. But one that has remained is the cutting of hair. It was said that a haircut during the first lunar month may bring bad luck to the mother's brothers. So many people have their hair cut on the Dragon Head Raising Day. 

Umbrellas could be one of the world's most important inventions. The first umbrella was invented over four thousand years ago. 

Umbrellas were used on sunny days at first. Chinese people were the first to use their umbrellas on rainy days. They waxed (给……打蜡) their paper umbrellas so that they could be used when it was raining. 

The word "umbrella" comes from the Latin word, umbra. It means shade (背阴). Starting in the 16th century, the umbrella became popular in the Western world, especially in northern Europe, where it often rains. At first, people thought that the umbrella was only suitable for women. 

Then a famous English traveler, Jonas Hanway (1712-1786), carried and used an umbrella in England for thirty years. Because of him, men began to use umbrellas. 

In Europe, early umbrellas were made of wood and covered with canvas (帆布). 

People used very hard wood to make umbrella handles. In 1852, Samuel Fox invented a new kind of umbrella with ribs (伞骨) made of steel. 

Samuel also started a company called English Steels Company. After that, compact collapsible (可叠) umbrellas were the next important step in umbrella production.

My father died when I was five. It was hard on us all. My brother，who is eight years older than me，began to watch over my mother and me. 

Because of my father's death，my mother was forced to get a full-time job. My brother would get me up for school，and make me breakfast. While I was eating，he would lay out my clothes，and gather my school books up. Hand in hand，we would walk to the bus stop. As we waited，he would play games my father used to play with me. He did his best to make me happy，and he succeeded every time. 

When we arrived home from school，we were alone for about half an hour，until mom was home from work. He would sit me down with three cookies and find something for dinner，having everything ready for mom，so she could start cooking.

There is a beautiful café in Zhijiang Bookstore. Many students likes reading books with their family and friends here. They can also eat delicious food and drink coffee here. Li Ming is one of them. His favorite book is Harry Potter. He says, "Books are useful. They can help us know the world (世界)."
