What does it mean to be green? {#blank#}1{#/blank#} It also means taking special steps to protect the environment. Buying a green product is a small step everyone can take. Deciding whether a product is green, however, isn't always easy. Here is what we may keep in mind.

The materials of a product usually come first. What is it made of? Are there any harmful chemicals (化学物) in it? Green products are made of more natural materials, {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

Packaging (包装) is important. How is a product packaged? Is it over packaged? We'd better choose glass, metal and paper packaging, as these can be reused or more easily recycled.

Look into what the company tells us about their product. It's easy to say that a product is "green" or "all natural", {#blank#}3{#/blank#} That's why some information about a product should not be completely believed. After all, companies try to make us believe that their products are environmentally responsible.

Location (地点) matters. Where was a product produced? Where are we buying it? It is a good idea to order food directly from local farmers, and shop at markets near our houses, because we can go there without driving a car.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Better than buying is choosing to leave an unnecessary product in the store. It sends a message to the producer, keeps money in our pockets, reduces (减少) waste and keeps the planet healthy.

Are there any lakes in your hometown? What color are they? Around one-third of the world's lakes are blue according to a study in September 2022. But global warming (全球变暖) may lead them to turn green or even brown.

Yang from Southern Methodist University in the US and his team studied the color of over 85,000 lakes based on satellite photos taken from 2013 to 2020. They found that lakes in places with cooler average summer air temperatures—below 19℃—were more likely to be blue than lakes in places with warmer summers.

According to the research, the color of a lake is in part decided by what's in the water. Water takes in the long wavelengths of sunlight, such as red, orange, and yellow, leaving behind the shorter ones like green and mostly blue. In other words, the cleaner the water is, the bluer it looks. In warmer lakes, phytoplankton (浮游植物) develops easily. It has colors from green to brown and red, giving the lake a different color. If global warming continues, one in ten blue lakes might change color, according to the study.

Lakes serve as an important part of our environment, with their color being one of the oldest ways to decide the health of an ecosystem. Humans get their drinking water from lakes, streams and groundwater. As lakes become greener, people may lose lots of clean water. Because of this, treating the water of such lakes becomes more expensive.

At the same time, blue lakes are also a place for people to relax. Some people, according to Catherine O' Reilly, a scientist from the study, considered blue lakes as a place to set their minds free. As these blue lakes disappear, they may feel sad.

If the temperature keeps rising, the fast growing of phytoplankton in greener lakes will provide lake animals more food. However, an increase in these things may also cause some lake animals to die because there is not enough oxygen for them.

Oliver Twist was brought up in the workhouse where only the poor and homeless lived. He was pale, thin and short for his age. The boys ate meals in a large stone hall. They ate a bowl of thin soup three times a day, with half a piece of bread on Sundays. The boys were always hungry and ate everything up. The bowls never needed washing. The boys polished(擦亮) them with their spoons(勺子) until they shone.

The boys got hungrier and hungrier until one day they intended to do something . One boy had to ask for more food that evening. So they decided who would go by drawing lots. Each boy took a piece of paper and anyone who got paper with a mark on it would do that. It turned out that Oliver Twist was that boy.

 The evening arrived, the soup was served, and soon the bowls were empty again in a few seconds. The boys were desperate(绝望) with hunger. With fear, Oliver went up to the master who was a fat and healthy man. He held up his bowl and said, "Please, sir,I want some more."

 The master turned very pale when he heard Oliver's words. "What?" said the master in a surprising voice.

"Please, sir," repeated Oliver, "Would you please give me more? I want some more." The master hit him with the spoon heavily, then took Oliver's arms and shouted to tell the board (理事会).

"He asked for more?" Mr Limbkins, the fattest board member, asked in horror. "The boy is ungrateful!""That boy will be hanged in the future!" said another board member. Oliver was then locked up in a dark room.

The food in America is different from our Chinese food. For example, they eat a lot of potatoes. They like to eat them every day. They eat bread for breakfast and for another meals. They eat bread with butter, maybe cheese or jam. Cheese and butter are made from milk. They drink a lot of milk, too. They drink the milk in hot or cold, and they put it in their tea. And they like meat or fish with potatoes and other vegetables. After the meal they always have something sweet. They call that dessert. 

① The Christmas party is over. The gifts are opened. The Christmas tree has finished its work. Every year, people around the world buy lots of trees for Christmas. In 2022, people in Americabought 20-30 million trees! But where do the trees go after the holiday?

② Many countries recycle(回收) the Christmas trees. For example, in Berlin, people take off toys from the trees and leave the trees on the streets. The trees will be sent to the power stations. Every year, Berlin recycles about 350, 000 trees. They can make electricity(电) for 500 families to use for a year. 

③ In New York. people always send their trees to parks. There, the trees are cut into small pieces. The wood pieces are used in gardens to keep the plants warm. 

④ In some countries, many Christmas trees are sent to zoos. Once a year, elephants in Austria get their favorite food. The trees taste sweet. 

⑤ The lives of Christmas trees are short, but they bring people so much happiness.
