I was now in my twenty-seventh year on the island. One evening Friday went out to look for food. But soon he was back, and he looked very afraid.

"Master! Master!" he cried, "There's a great ship near the island, and men are coming to the shore in a boat!"

I jumped up and ran with him down to the shore. I saw that it was an English ship! But why was it here? English ships never came this way. Perhaps they were pirates(海盗)!"Don't let them see you, Friday!" I called, "We'll hide in the trees and watch. "

There were eleven men in the boat, but three of them were prisoners(囚犯). Their arms were tied with rope, but their legs were free and they could walk. The other sailors pushed the three prisoners up the beach, laughing and shouting and hitting them. The three prisoners walked slowly along the beach and sat down under a tree, not far from us. They looked very unhappy.

Very quietly, I came up behind them through the trees, and called out to them in English.

"Don't be afraid, "I said. "I'm an Englishman. Perhaps I can help you. "

The three men turned and looked at me. They did not answer at once. They were too surprised.

Perhaps they thought I was a wild man myself, in my strange clothes made of animals' skins, and with my long hair and beard.

Then the oldest man spoke, "I am the captain of that ship, "he said, "and these two men are my first and second officers. Last night there was a mutiny (叛乱), and the seamen took the ship from me.

Now they're going to leave the three of us here, to die on this island. "

"Do these mutineers (叛军) have guns?"

"Only two, "he answered, "and they've left those on the boat. "

"All right, "I said. "We'll fight them. But if we get your ship back for you, you must take me back to England. "

Friday ran back to my house to get all the guns, and the captain and I made a plan.

In the South China Sea, there is a group of Jiaoren, or Chinese mermaids(美人鱼), whose tears(眼泪) become pearls(珍珠) after they fall. To the north of Kunlun Mountains, there is a monster called Xiangliu, which has nine heads with human faces but the body of a snake. These magic creatures(生物) are from the ancient book of mythical(神话的) legends Shan Hai Jing.

A famous story in the book is about Zhu Rong, the God of Fire. He is described as having a beastlike body and a human face, riding around the sky on two dragons. When he had a big fight with Gong Gong, the God of Water, Zhu Rong won. But after the fight, the human world came into complete darkness. Then he brought fire from heaven(天堂) to the world and taught humans how to use it.

The book has inspired(激发；使生灵感) many people like Luxun and JK Rowling. There are also many books, films, games and artworks made from it. Although it's not clear who wrote it, Shan Hai Jing is an important ancient book in the pre-Qin period of China and considered one of the treasures of Chinese culture. The stories in the book are now being spread from one generation to another in China. So for your next book, why not choose Shan Hai Jing? It may surprise you.

 Jason and his father were going to a supermarket by car to pick up some apples. It had been an unusual day. The sky was dark but there were few clouds. As they drove up the street, there started to be a loud sound heard across the ground.

 Jason's father immediately realized that a tornado(龙卷风) was coming. He stopped the car and told Jason to get out immediately. Jason and his father got out of the car and made their way to the closest building. By this time the wind was blowing harder, and it was hard to see or hear. Jason couldn't see his dad anymore. He also realized that he wasn't getting to the building fast enough. He was afraid he would be picked up by the wind and thrown into the air.

 As he made his way towards the building, he noticed a field to his right. He could see an irrigation ditch (灌溉渠). He felt really afraid inside because he'd never been in a tornado before. His heart began to race and he could feel sweat dripping down from his face. In a panic, he started running towards the ditch as fast as he could. He stumbled(绊倒)a bit as he climbed down into it, but soon he was lying flat on the ground, hiding inside. He could hear his heart beating even more loudly and felt his whole body shaking.____

 After a while, the wind died down and the loud roaring sound was gone. Jason slowly lifted his head and nervously looked around. What he saw was a great mess. Jason could hardly recognize the buildings in front of him because of all the damage.

 He stood up and with his legs shaking and walked to the building. Once there, he pushed the door open and went inside. It was a public building owned by the city. It was empty, but Jason could hear noises further inside. He walked into the large room and saw his dad. He ran across the room and gave him a big hug.

"Jason! How are you? I've been so worried about you!" said his father. "I couldn't find you anywhere!"

 Jason breathed a sigh of a relief(松了一口气) and sat down. He did have a story to tell!

Bill Smith is an 80-year-old man. He lives with his brother Bob Smith in Texas, America. In his free time, he likes making things and helping others. There are many stray (流浪的) dogs in the street, so Bill wants to help them.

The brothers find nine dogs. The dogs always have no food to eat, so they are not healthy. Then they let these nine dogs live with them and eat with them.

"Everyone needs a little fun in life. Stray dogs need it, too," Bill Smith says. "I think it must be very interesting for them to travel by train."

So Bill and his brother buy some old buckets(桶子)and make a dog train. It is very long. The dogs are happy to see the train, and Bill Smith takes them on trips by train every week.

"These dogs don't have families, but they are lucky to have a good time with us now. I'm very happy to be with them, too," Bill says.
