If someone said they'd pay you $1,800 to stay off social media(社交媒体) for 6 years, would you do it? Could you? An American mom challenged her son to do just that, and he succeeded.

Sivert Klefsaas is the youngest of Lomna Gold-strand Klefsaas'four children, and his three older sisters all used social media growing up. It was influencing their feelings, as well as their friendships. So, Lorna thought, "If I could, I'd be willing to do whatever to keep Sivert off social media as long as I could, whatever that looks like." And that's where the idea for this challenge came from. 

It all started when Lora heard about a similar "16 for 16 challenge" on the radio, where a mother called Amanda Green gave her daughter Teresa $1,600 when she turned 16 if she stayed off social media. So, Lorna decided to create her own "18 for 18 challenge". Not only did Sivert finally complete this challenge, but he would do it again, too.

"It wasn't too difficult to live without social media, and I didn't think about it much during the 6 years," Sivert said. "As time went on, it was more of a pride thing."

He had his friends keep him up to date on the latest information. Sivert added, "I got to avoid all the unnecessary things that were on there. It also meant I had more time to focus on my grades and sports instead."

Now that he's done with the challenge, Sivert joined Instagram(照片墙), but has no plans to let social media define (定义) him. 

"Social media is great. We certainly need to use it," Sivert said. "But also make sure you spend time in other areas of your life, especially those personal relationships."

Still, Lorna is proud of her son's success. "We are certainly not against social media, but it's the healthy using of it," Lorna told CNN.

When Zhu Yun bought her dogs five years ago, she spent nearly half of her money raising dogs each month. Every month, she spends nearly 7,000 yuan on pet food and snacks, pet clothing and taking her seven-year-old poodle (鬟毛狗) and five-year-old Yorkshire terrier (约克郡犬) on holidays. "I take them to go on a trip twice a month, and during each Spring Festival, I take them to Shanghai," said Zhu. She also pays some photographers to take photos of her pets. This costs her 3,000 yuan each time.

People like Zhu are making the pet market grow. Pet shops now sell things like food and water bowls. They also sell lifestyle things such as pet wine, pet milk tea and pet clothes. There are even some smart robots for dogs and cats. That's because people's ideas about pets change. Most people from the post-90s generation (90后) are from one-child families, so people feel lonely sometimes. For this reason, their pets are like their family members. This is why people like to spend more money on their pets today.

Hu Min had a dog when she studied in Australia. She said, "Years ago, my parents kept dogs to watch and protect their homes. But today, dogs don't play such a role (角色). They are like our family. Some even sleep in the same bed with their owners. I want to buy different kinds of things for my dog. I think my pet Taffee's life should be as colorful as mine."

Many people like visiting new places and seeing new things. But before taking a trip, we all have to decide who we want to travel with: is it better to go with family, with friends, or alone?

Traveling with family can be hard work and you may argue a lot. Not everyone in the family wants to do the same things. But traveling with family can be very cheap. And traveling with parents can make you feel more comfortable and relaxed. They won't let you do anything dangerous. Traveling with friends isn't usually expensive, but money always plays an important role. It's normal for everyone to have different budgets(预算) and there needs to be lots of compromise(妥协). This may cause problems. But traveling with friends can be great fun. It also helps you learn more about your friends, and sharing experiences can keep your friendship (友谊). 

When deciding who to travel with, young adults can choose to travel alone. Traveling alone has advantages. For example, you don't have to compromise on money problems. You can choose what you want to do and it can also be a good way to meet new people. However, it can be lonely and sometimes dangerous. When you're ill or having trouble, nobody will be there to help you.
