Do you know how many kinds of plants and animals there are in the world？ Maybe one million（百万）？Two million？ No，not even close! Scientists think there are between eight and fourteen million kinds of plants and animals, but we only know about 1. 8million now. They are slowly finding new kinds all the time, and that's good news for us. 

In 2009, a group of scientists went to the rainforest to search for new kinds of animals. They had to walk silently and looked really carefully. They found a tiny frog（青蛙）that is smaller than the end of your smallest finger! They found another frog, too. That looks like it is made of glass. The scientists also found seven new kinds of grasshoppers（蚱蜢）. Some of the are very beautiful. 

Scientists tell us that frogs and insects（昆虫）are very important. They help to keep our environment clean. We can also use them to make new medicines. Researchers all over the world are working very hard to find new plants and animals every day. But their jobs are getting harder, because forests where these animals live are quickly disappearing（消失）and the animals are，too. 

The 31st Summer World University Games, also called Universiade,(第 31 届世界大运会) 1 in Chengdu in 2023. It started on July 28th and ended on August 8th.

The opening ceremony began at 8 o' clock on the evening of July 28th at the Dong' an Lake Sports Park. This was an 2 sports event with two key words: sunshine and dreams. There were in total 6,500 competitors from all over the world. China had 411 sports players, 206 in the men's events and 205 in the women's events.

Food is an important part of life and culture in Chengdu, the 3 of Sichuan. The young players tasted many local foods not only at the players' restaurant 4 also on the streets. People in Chengdu took an active part in learning English and did a lot for the event. Chengdu welcomed every visitor 5 .

A new study has shown how the color of a bowl can influence the taste of the food it holds. 

Although it is hard to say what a picky eater (挑食的人) is like, the type may include people who have a limited diet, who have strong likes or dislikes for certain food, who require food to be prepared in a special way, who aren't willing to accept new food, or who show signs of all these features. 

According to this new study, food was put into two groups in red, blue, or white bowls. While the color made no difference in taste for non-picky eaters, the picky. eaters reported changes in their taste senses-based-on-the color of the bowl being used. Snacks in red and blue bowls were thought to have more salt than those in white bowls, while snacks in red bowls were less pleasant than those in the other bowls. 

 "This knowledge can be useful for those who want to try more kinds of foods," says Lorenzo Stafford, a psychologist from the University of Portsmouth in the UK. "For example, if you want to encourage a picky eater to try some bitter (苦的) vegetables, you can try to put them on a pink plate or in a yellow bowl, because this can give him or her a sweet feeling."

At first it may seem strange that a bowl color can influence the taste-of food, but the research before has shown how light and music can influence eating habits. All of our senses are connected, including taste. 

 "This new study can help in treating food neophobia--the unwillingness to try new food, "the team of the study says, and further studies will be required to find out more relationships between colors and foods. 

 "Through further studies, maybe we can decide ways to help actively influence a person's diet, and as a result, their health in mind and body." says Stafford. 

Last Sunday evening, my parents went shopping with my sister. But I studied alone at home because I would have an English test. Suddenly, I saw bright light in my neighbour（邻居）'s kitchen. I thought he was cooking so I went on studying. 

Soon, there was a terrible smell in the air and I thought something was wrong. I went out and saw fire coming out of my neighbour's kitchen. So I shouted "Fire! Fire!" But no one heard or came out.

We tried our best to pour（泼）water through the kitchen window, but the fire was too big. Luckily, the firemen came and put out the fire quickly. When my parents came back, they found I was dirty and tired. After my neighbour told them the whole story, they were happy and said I was a brave（勇敢的）boy.

"We later started a chat group on WeChat, and we often shared good books. Starting as travel partners, we have become friends. I think I'm lucky!" Xiaomi said.
